Ridge's winemakers craft some of the most exceptional wines by blending a variety of grapes into the finished product...the wine in your glass. Everywhere we dine, both on land and at sea, the Ridge name is well known and highly respected for producing outstanding wines. From the base of the mountain, the 15-minute drive up Montebello Road is a winding route to the winery. Some of the turns have a very tight radius, and you'll be sharing the road with cyclists as well as oncoming traffic, so drive with extra caution. Before your visit, be sure to reserve a tasting on their website. Tastings are available for a fee for non-members. We belong to the Trio Membership, which includes ATP, Z List, and Monte Bello Collector. Ridge also offers private release events for members, along with additional benefits depending on the membership level (see their membership page for details). These events often feature exclusive tastings and wine releases accompanied by hors d'oeuvre stations arranged throughout the property. On non-event days, our tastings are complimentary, and we're allowed to bring up to two guests. Small bites, including cheeses, crackers, pâté, and salami, are available for purchase. When the weather is just right (not too hot or too cold) the winery opens several seating areas, including the covered barn, the shaded patio adjoining the barn, and multiple patio spaces at varying elevations throughout the property. Wear comfortable shoes, as you'll be walking along short but hilly paved pathways. One word of caution: you'll notice posted signs warning, "Beware of Rattlesnakes." Fortunately, we've yet to encounter one. The winery itself is absolutely beautiful, with impeccably manicured grounds. Meandering pathways lead you through the barn, out to the patios, and up to the top of the hill, where you're rewarded with breathtaking views of the valley. You know you're perched high above Silicon Valley when you look down and spot two iconic landmarks: Apple's Ring Building, better known as "The Spaceship," and Moffett Field's Hangar One. At an elevation of 2,300 feet, these massive structures appear surprisingly small. The winery's crème de la crème is the Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon. Not only does this wine age beautifully, but it has also appreciated significantly in value over the years. We currently have a 2009 bottle that will need to be opened soon. I recommend following the guidance printed on the back label, which suggests the ideal number of years to cellar the wine before opening. During our last tasting, I especially enjoyed the 2024 Paso Robles Zinfandel, which has a recommended drinking window of about seven years. It was already drinking beautifully, but I'm looking forward to tasting it again in 2031 and comparing how it has evolved. A visit to Ridge Winery always makes for a wonderful afternoon: a scenic, twisty drive, thoughtfully guided wine tastings, spectacular views, and, of course, a few bottles to bring home and enjoy later. Prior to Ridge, someone else owned the property with some vines over 100 years old. Producing over 1 million bottles a year Ridge wines are readily available throughout the United States and even OUS. Many visitors like us are familiar with Ridge. Visiting gives a whole new perspective on the interesting history of the winery, types of wines, and lovely Cabernet they produce right here on this property. We were welcomed by a gentlemen named Cosmo who was enthusiastic and proud of the wines and history of the Property. Well done Cosmo! Why four stars versus five.... Wine tasting was $110 for two people - minus half star. Their Cab Sav from this winery is $100 per bottle. It tastes like a $22 bottle - minus half star. The software to set up tasting is clunky and wasn't sure what we had bought. Their elite Cab Sav is world class but out of range for most including me at $500 per bottle retail. They have 5 tasting flights varying from $30, $40, $45, $60, and $65. 3 wines per flight and they pour a good portion. We got to try 3 different flights to share. Mount Eden Estate , Chardonnay, and Cabernet flight. All the wines were pretty good. Fruit forward and bold. Our favorites were the first Chardonnay , Pinot noir Tanaka project , and Cab from Mount Eden library. I believe it was 3 bottles purchase to waive a tasting fee. Pricey wines. There was only one male staff. He was friendly and made sure we had enough shade when the umbrella shade moved. You can bring outside food. Nice Mountain View.

Unfortunately, when we arrived we learned that the property had been rented out for a private event. We were never informed of the full buyout when we made our reservation. As a result, instead of being able to enjoy the grounds, we were seated in the front area next to the parking lot and essentially excluded from the part of the property that was a major reason we chose Thomas Fogarty in the first place. I completely understand hosting private events. What I don't understand is continuing to accept tasting reservations without clearly telling guests in advance that their experience will be significantly restricted. Had we been told, we simply would have chosen another winery for such an important occasion. The wine wasn't the issue. The problem was paying for and planning around a Thomas Fogarty winery experience and then arriving to discover that the experience we reasonably expected wasn't available and the service staff was rude and dismissive. For a normal afternoon this would have been disappointing. For a milestone 70th birthday that we specifically planned in advance, it was extremely frustrating. If the property is substantially unavailable because of a private buyout, customers holding tasting reservations deserve to know before they arrive.

The entire grounds was a photoshoot waiting to happen, and I heard there are some lovely hiking trails right through this winery. Besides the absurdity (you could take one or more of their plastic water glasses and refill them as many times as you want), I wonder why someone who has chosen to be in the hospitality business also chose to display such an inhospitable (rude, even) message. Perhaps their intention was something like "If you refill your own water bottle (thanks for bringing it!), please ensure that the bottle does not touch the spigot." Or perhaps "Please help conserve water." Instead, it basically said "If you absolutely must have some water, we begrudgingly allow you to have a little bit of ours." Come on.

The 2023 in oak was MUCH better. 2024 Lucy's Rosé of Pinot Noir 2022 Hidden Block Pinot Noir 2016 Hidden Block Pinot Noir Not surprisingly, 2016 had the most complexity. Rosé is decent, if that's your thing. The grounds are scenic and the facility was modern and clean. The people working here are very nice but it gets busy so there were sometimes uncomfortably long gaps between pours.

We only tried the reds, FYI, but they had a nice selection of whites too. 2. If you buy 2 bottles you get 1 free tasting, 3 bottles, they comp two tastings. 3. Be sure to visit the little house with a bunch of memorabilia. The history of the farm is super cool. They have free recipe cards too! 4. Horses! They currently board a LOT of horses, and have clear signage posted to keep your distance as to not spook them. 5. Bring walking shoes! There are trails you can explore around the winery and there's lots of dusty areas, so keep the dress shoes at home (or bring a change of footwear). Caveat anyone with motion sickness in the car, as the drive there is WINDY, but beautiful. I can't wait to return and explore the grounds more!

I don't really like writing negative reviews, but here goes…read more I have been visiting this winery for over 10 years. I mainly go to enjoy live music and socializing with friends. Also the drive and location is beautiful scenery. However after Covid, things have changed a lot. In the past you would find an available table, bring your picnic lunch (in the patio area with the shaded overhang), go inside the tasting room, sample some wines and buy a bottle. Great experience then. Also well versed in wine employees helping you. This is not the case at all now! Since Covid, you can no longer bring in your own food and they would not let us even go into the tasting room! You are forced to sit at a table and have "table service." I can't even think of it as table service because over this past weekend we had horrible service both days we went. We like to see our favorite local bands play at this beautiful winery. On Saturday when we went, we were immediately hounded by our server about what we wanted to order. We hadn't even had time to look at the menu. They bring only one printed menu and tell us to scan their QR code. That's fine, but some of the people in our group are old school and prefer a printed menu. I am shocked how much $$ the wine is here. It used to be reasonable but it is not anymore. The cheapest bottle is a bottle of Rose for $40. It was just meh. All the other wine choices are $46+ per bottle. And if I'm going to be buying some wine and enjoying drinking it with friends and enjoy live music it would be nice if I could bring in my own snacks/picnic so that I don't have to spend more. Our table of 5 spent well over $300 during the 3 hours we were there. On Sunday, we had even worse service. As soon as we walked in and sat down they saw I had a soft ice cooler. I was immediately told that we can't bring in our own food. I explained to the server and said I brought in a cooler because you do not have ice here, and the leftover food I purchased the day before (cheese, salami) was getting very hot during that service while enjoying music. So I wanted to be more prepared to put the food in a cooler as needed. Also, some of us like "ice" water and on a hot day, the water they bring out is not cool. The way I was first approached was very rude. Our main server that helped our group was not very nice at all and rude. She kept coming over to us when we first got there to see if we were ready to order. None of us had time to even look at the menu. She also did not know anything about wine. That was obvious. When one of us in the party asked about the different chardonnay choices which one is more oaky or buttery, she did not know and she did not even try and get more information for us. Also it was a very hot day in the high 90's and most of us wanted lighter white wines rather than red. The winery needs to get rid of their "table service", the servers are inexperienced with wines, rude, pushy to put in an order and impatient. They need to bring back how they used to have a nice experience here before Covid. When I told my rude server I wanted to get my bill and check out, she said "we have bad wifi over here at this table so you need to come up to our monitors for that..." then she walked away. Well that was BS cuz prior to that we were ordering our options from their QR code and they had good wifi for that. I guess she didn't like that I never came to their monitors where you "check in" and she came back to me and suddenly she was able to help me at my table to check out. So sad how downhill this place has gone. I hope the owner will think about how the after Covid changes are and that the staff is rude and not experienced with wine.

I do suggest hours of 11am-5pm during the longer months of daylight though. I miss the days that I spent 11 am - 5pm enjoying Pinot and taking in the beautiful landscapes. My dream is for Regale to open on Friday and close at 7 PM for people who want to relax after work. I would be at Regale's every Friday after work I definitely recommend Regale Winery & Vineyard!
