This place is like a small museum, library, and store rolled into one. The walls are lined with not-for-sale vintage consoles and collectibles in original packaging. Fun place to walk around. Good selection of used games for a number of systems, and the proprietor will usually buy games back for not too much less than his selling price. Pretty good selection of accessories, too. Helpful and friendly proprietor. Once, I asked him for an HDMI cable, and he was out of new ones, so he gave me an extra one he had for free. They also have turntables and some great vintage records. A good place to sell used games. They typically offer 50-70% of market value (a better deal than most brick-and-mortar stores will give you) in cash. You can obviously make more money by selling on eBay, but when you factor in the cost of shipping and packaging, not to mention the time spent creating listings, negotiating with buyers, etc., selling to a middle-man becomes a valid alternative. read more

Well, I was gonna call this "Madison's retro gaming Mecca," but a previous reviewer has already used the term. Oh, what the hell, this is Madison's retro gaming Mecca. I've never seen a video game store around that has quite the selection of classic games as this place. I mean, sure, there's garbage games to wade through, but occasionally you find a real classic. Last time I was in Madison I was able to pick up bunch of games through their buy one, get one 50% off sale. I picked up Metroid Prime (which is gold to me, I love the Metroid series and I never was able to play the Prime trilogy when it was new) and a Medal of Honor game for Gamecube, as well as a couple of newer XBox 360 games to try out. I had a great time looking at the old Nintendo and Sega merch that they have collecting in display cases. There's classic advertisements for old systems and just tons of cool stuff everywhere. The same guy who runs the store is in there every time I've been in. He's a very nice guy, and shoots straight from the hip when it comes to recommending a game. He commented on my fiancée's tattoo one time she was in there and sparked a great conversation. He can be a bit caught up in his work if he gets to doing something, so you definitely need to speak up when it's time for you to check out or he might not notice. I've been going to this interdependently owned video game store since the owner's first location in the early 90's! This definitely is the best video game shop in Madison! I mean, the only other places I can think of are PrePlayed or Half-Price Books for older cartridge based games. I usually hang around to talk and bring in super random gaming goods to sell or trade! This is Madison's locally grown used video game mecca. The store has great prices on retro and new game systems, with loads of NES, SNES, genesis, and misc interesting stuff. The owner is very friendly and runs what I consider to be the coolest shop in town. 5-stars! read more

Great prices for games and consoles! I was looking for GameCube games, which they didn't really have a huge selection of, but I was able to get three games for less than $15 so all in all a great place to look! It did smell like smoke and looks a little dingy from the outside, but the staff was friendly and helpful. read more

Heyyyyy, nerdulicious. I go here for used X Box games, and the guy that runs the store, while pretty non-talkative (so far... lol), is always ready to cut me a deal on a few games. I haven't had time to really explore the store, but it looks like he carries games for other systems, as well as some otaku supplies. Models, figures, posters and stuff. I've been going to video game exchange since I was a kid and barely had a PS2 to my name. Lance the owner has always been a pillar in the gaming community of Madison. He makes sure that his prices on trade ins are fair, offers cash discounts, and his business allowed me to be exposed to games I otherwise wouldn't have been. I will preface this review by saying that I am strictly an old school gamer. I only collect video games from the cartridge era and very seldom go past the Nintendo 64 years. That being said... Video Game X Change is the best video game store I have ever been in. The guy who runs the place is very laid back and has very reasonable prices. His place is wall to wall nostalgia. There are light up signs/store displays from the late 80s/early 90s and he has all sorts of toys and collectibles (almost all of which are not for sale, merely for aesthetics). This place has plenty of older systems/games for sale dating back to the Atari 2600 era. As an avid collector of NES games in particular, he always has a diverse stock of games and his prices are locally unbeatable and competitive with ebay. He also has a rotating series of systems/games for demonstration purposes. The owner is a nice, albeit quiet guy who has never done wrong by me. He also sells newer games/systems as well as music and dvd/blu rays. For sure my favorite place to shop. read more
