CONNECTION: My husband and I lived it Bend for almost 20 years but moved away a couple of years before this delightful little store, near our Bend neighborhood, opened in roughly the latter part of 2018. But we were still in Bend multiple times a year to see my parents who lived nearby and visited regularly up through the passing of the last of them in 2024 and even through this year to take care of things at their home. We will soon make our last ever trip to Bend, our first was in 1982 so we are grieving the end of things, and one of the things we will miss is stopping in at West Coast Provisions for purchases for my mom's kitchen or for our own, or treats to share or gifts or gift cards for friends and family. Every time we were in we found something to purchase. SERVICE: People working here were always congenial, if not warm, and questions were always answered. And except for right after the local high school let out for the day, it was never very crowded. Maybe that was also because we chose the timing to avoid crowds because having lived in and visited Bend for so many years, we knew when those crowded times were more likely to be. $: Prices are premium here and so know that going in. You are paying for convenience and uniqueness. Newport Avenue Market, the independent and employee owned full service grocer just a few blocks from this one is our favorite of all grocery markets of anyplace we've lived and West Coast Provisions doesn't compete with that. But it is lovely little shop for what it is. TIP - SATURDAY FARMER'S MARKET: The NW Crossing Farmer's Market (a good one) is on Saturday mornings in Market Season and on this same street. PARKING: On street parallel parking and street parking can be hard to come by with Sparrow Bakery directly across the street and a popular burger joint next door. There is also a small lot behind the building. ACCESSIBILTY: Level in from sidewalk, all on one floor, ample clear floor space in aisles and at register. ADA marked parking behind the building, I think. COFFEE AND GOODIES: If you're hankering for a Sparrow ocean roll and the line is too long, this market sometimes has ocean rolls in the store along with goodies from other local bakeries. And the sell good coffee by the cup. WINE TASTING: For such a small store there is an impressive array of wines and they host a curated tasted once a month (I think). Check with them to learn more.

They also have a lot of fun items, some fresh, some frozen - like a little neighborhood market but more expensive. I got the viral gem candy, an ocean roll, some hot sauce, and kombucha. There was only one employee working and I didn't really interact with him until we were checking out. This shop is fun to peruse if you want to grab something to take home like food or trinkets.

    Service and selection both missing on the day of our mid afternoon Monday visit. So much less…read morethan we expected, given we were fans of the guy who owns this from the days we lived in Bend and he was chef/owner of a soup food cart in downtown Bend and then owner / chef at Barrio in two downtown locations (now Bar Rio next door) as well as Shimshon for Israeli fare which started as food truck and now bricks and mortar service counter at The Grove. We expected a variety of good eats as take out options here based on the marketing materials for Bodega so braved downtown parking specifically to go here to pick up something good to eat to take with us to the house we were staying at for a few days as visitors. Here is what is described in their marketing stuff: "We prep it, you take it home, and knock the pants off your family and friends. The grab-and-go meals and grocery essentials at Bodega are inspired by our travels throughout Mexico, Spain, Israel, and the Mediterranean. .. Worth the trip downtown? Uh huh. Satisfy those mid-day hangries? Yup. Best of all, we can bottle it, box it, and you take it home. That's the beauty of Bodega. " What we found in the grab and go cold case was a few plastic containers of two kinds of salad, one of which looked as if it had been there a while. The girl at the counter didn't bother to look up from the book she was reading as we walked in or at any time to ask if she could help even though my husband and I were clearly talking about our confusion for limited options for fresh take out and wondering if we were looking in the wrong spot. Finally we interrupted her reading to ask her about it and she looked up, answering our questions and when we asked how to tell which salad was the was freshest she answered that question too. We felt very much as if we were interrupting her free time. Maybe we hit them on a bad day, Bar Rio is closed on Mondays for example, and if the options are coming from that kitchen, maybe the low inventory was due to that. But the lack of service didn't help. On the flip side, someone walked in who works at another of the downtown stores, picked up a candy bar and she and the woman behind the counter had a friendly chat about the reading material. I think if you were working downtown and popped in for something like a bag of chips (big selection for such a small space), or soda or candy bar or package of cheese this would work swell. It may even work well if you are downtown anyway on some other day but Monday when they are better stocked to grab something to take with you. But for what we expected, helpful service and good selection of take away prepared foods, we found neither. It was not a return on the effort to find downtown Bend parking to to in.

(As in January and February.) The bad news is last year there was a poor truffle harvest and so no Truffleur was available. Back to the important thing, good goat cheese, if you're ordering your own custom box of multiple cheeses, you might also want to add to the order, along with Truffleur (with white tuffles), some others like: Remembrance (with rosemary), Pondhopper (using a local beer in the cheesemaking process), Capricorns (with peppercorns), Fenacho (with fenugreek) or Classico (and better yet the Classico Reserve). And if you order the cheese now so it arrives before February 6, the date of the "big game" my husband tells me, and do watch the Superbowl (the only reason I can think of to do that is for the commercials and the food at the party), while others are eating hot dogs and potato chips, you could be eating Fenacho stuffed dates, or Pondhopper mac n cheese, or grilled Poblanos stuffed with goat cheese raisins and hazelnuts. (Recipes on the Tumalo web site.) If you live in central Oregon or in the Valley area, from Eugene through Portland, you can probably find Truffleur in local specialty markets, or even perhaps in bigger markets, like Market of Choice, that normally carry other Tumalo cheese products. (Although looks like Whole Foods may not be carrying Truffleur this year.) But if you're outside the normal range of Tumalo Farms distribution, isn't the ability to "e order" a good thing? We had an early reservation at Rancher Butcher Chef at 4:45 with some friends visiting from out of town, and right from the start it felt right. Walked in, instantly greeted, super friendly, no awkward standing around wondering who's in charge. The place was still quiet, which made it even better. Drinks came quick, appetizers followed, and let me just say this... do not skip the beef tartare. Seriously. Not negotiable. The escargot was also ridiculous in the best way. Now the real test... the steak. Perfect. Cooked exactly right, seasoned like someone actually cares, not just throwing salt at it and hoping for the best. This is one of the few places I've been where I'm not sitting there thinking "I could've made this better at home." Then came dessert... some kind of banana cold cake situation that I didn't fully understand but absolutely devoured. Whatever it is, order it. Ask questions later. By the time we were finishing up, the place filled up fast and got a little loud, but honestly that just confirmed what we already knew... when a place is this good, people show up. Great service, great food, fair prices, and a steak that actually lives up to the hype. What more do you want... a personal rancher cooking it at your table?
