Given that it's a retail store, you would think they would have a professional attitude, or at least act like they are ready to help customers when they walk in. I have been there 4 or 5 times, and every time (including one time when I called the store) the staff seemed like they would rather be out on a smoke break. A couple times they were flat out rude. If it was always the same person helping me I would think maybe it was just that one person who was the problem. I have been helped by several different people, though, and it's always the same. This most recent experience was the last time I visit Brown's. If you need shoes, I recommend Emerhoff's. The people there are helpful and polite, they have a good selection for a town as small as Ames, and the prices are decent. There is also a Shoe Carnival that opened in Ames recently. They don't have as many higher quality shoes as Emerhoff's, but they have a lot to choose from and they offer good discounts.

Pretty messy and frustrating experience at the Ames US Cellular. I wanted to create my own account…read moreafter sharing a joint plan with my mom, who lives in another town. The process to create this new account was not well explained and required two trips to the store and several phone calls outside of those trips just to transfer the paperwork my mom had signed to an associate at this store. When I went in the third time to finally set up my account, I was told the paperwork could not be accessed even though I had been assured by another associate that they would have no problem getting to it. Fortunately, an associate called the out-of-town store and got an image of the paperwork transferred so I could finally sign it and start the process to open my own account...and then they had technical issues and STILL couldn't open the account. So I left with the understanding that I still did not have my own account or service plan with US Cellular. I went to Verizon to open an account there. Of course, they also had technical issues and did not get my number ported over for another two days. Within those two days, I got a text from one of the US Cellular associates, Joe, saying that my account had been created and that I could finally upgrade, which I took to mean, upgrade to a better phone and choose a plan for it. Lacking the time to once again visit the store and being already invested in Verizon, I did not respond. Once my Verizon service had been activated the next day, I called US Cellular and learned my service had been cancelled. Last week, I got a bill from US Cellular for a full month of service. I did not believe I had signed up for a service plan in the first place and had not signed anything aside from the transfer paperwork (which I was not given a copy of). When I called this store to ask why I had been charged for a month of service, Joe said that by signing the transfer paperwork, I had agreed to sign up for their basic plan. This was not explained to me in store or ever. I assumed I would sign the transfer paperwork, create my account, sign up for a plan, pick out a phone, then get that phone activated with the new plan and on the new account. Nobody at US Cellular told me otherwise. Furthermore, two days had elapsed from the time I was texted about my account being created to the time when my number was ported over to Verizon. So I had inadvertently used two days of service total. And was then charged for the full month. Joe said it was policy to be charged for the whole month regardless of what I had actually used. Great policy. Fortunately, the US Cellular customer service folks were very helpful and got my bill down to less than $5 for my two days of surprise service. So, I guess be careful what you sign at the Ames US Cellular, be prepared to waste a ton of time trying to figure out basic things, and be prepared to be billed for a lot more than you expect.

Absolutely-lovely mattress store. Didn't feel particularly pressured, but I felt like a valued…read morecustomer - like they actually wanted me to be satisfied with any product that I purchased from them. While I (hopefully!), don't need another mattress anytime soon, this would be the place I'd return to. PROS: -Shopkeepers don't work on commission, and that becomes insanely obvious when you step into the store. Whereas we had someone on our tail constantly and trying to upsell us and offer better deals ("well, I can take $200 off that price right now!") when we went to another mattress store, we got lovely peace and quiet here. The sales associate welcomed us and pointed us in the right direction when we came in. Then he went back to his post and allowed us to look around with supervision. He occasionally came and checked in and asked if we were finding everything okay, but we had the ability to lay on and test the mattresses in peace without feeling rushed. -Associate was also pretty knowledgeable. He didn't seem to have too many specific details about things, but he was very familiar with the mattresses and how they compared. He also had very detailed information about all of their programs/buying process. -Nobody tried to sell us anything we didn't need. They were happy to explain the differences between the more-expensive and less-expensive options, but it never felt like we were being shoved towards the more-expensive one. He seemed to want us to be satisfied with our purchase - whatever it was. -They offer a 1-year happiness guarantee. If you find that it's not a good fit for you within one year, they'll take it back (minus a $50 surcharge fee) and give you full credit for the mattress. That's LEAGUES above other programs in town (which was 30 days and 100 days at other stores). -They have some coil-designed mattresses, some hybrid designs, and some pure memory foam designs. Mattresses range from $300-ish to $3,000-ish. There's a simple pricing structure laid out on every mattress with the breakdown of prices - how much for each size option of that type with various foundations or other options. No guessing or feeling uncomfortable continually asking a sales associate. Nothing seems marked up or unreasonably priced. -They also sell sleep accessories like sheets, memory foam pillows, and mattress protectors. -Mattress was delivered next-day with absolutely no problem for free in Ames. Evening of purchase, we received a call giving us a 3-hour window for the next day. Mattress was delivered in that window during the next day. CONS: -Relatively limited selection of brands (mostly Restonic), and they don't have the ability to special order any other brands.
