This "Mexican sushi" just wasn't very appetizing.
Andrew C.

There's no possible way for this restaurant to have so many 5 star reviews. At least some of them must be shills. We went in on a Friday night at 7pm, and the restaurant was deserted. Staff was sitting around at various tables looking surly and listless, while a sad worker was putting away chairs outside. Closing time was I think 10pm? The food is way overpriced for what it is. One of the main categories is "Mexican sushi", but they are not worth the $20+ asking price. The saddest thing about the "sushi" is the rice. It's mushy and unseasoned. The rice is like a bland, uniform, textureless mass. Every roll has this overpowering cream cheese in it, so that's all you'll taste. The pieces are too big to eat in one bite, so you'll bite into it, and it will immediately fall apart. The best thing about that order was the roasted pepper it comes with. That was tasty. We actually went for the mussels, but noticed that the price was increased from the menus posted on yelp. We felt that they were too expensive, so we ordered other things instead. The other thing we ordered were the fish and chips. These were pretty okay...not the best, but not the worst. For the price, I wish it had a little bit more. If I had to eat here again, that's what I would order. They were on the expensive side, but still one of the cheaper options, relatively speaking. The waitress was very nice, and the service was quite good, which is the reason I don't have the heart to give this place 1 star. I'm not sure this restaurant will be around much longer. They seem to be on a death spiral of raising prices to try to remain profitable, which further drives people away. The review shills may fool people into coming to the restaurant once, but repeat business is unlikely. This isn't a tourist town...a restaurant at this location needs repeat business from locals to survive, so this is such a short-sighted strategy. Whispers was such a better offering for the location. I bet a lot of locals miss them.

Mexican sushi - Mar y Tierra
Cheryl M.

Friends and I happened to be in the area....one friend wanted sushi and came across this spot on Yelp....hmm 5 reviews with quite an eclectic menu...this isn't a sushi place! A little bit of everything I suppose...from steaks, pasta, seafood and Mexican sushi....interesting! Grand opening sign above the entrance and quickly welcomed...place wasn't busy with 1 other table finishing up. Decided to order their MEXICAN SUSHI: :: Mar y Tierra - shrimp, beef, cucumber, avocado, cream cheese, breaded and fried and topped with fake crab salad - different and good. The beef added nothing to this roll...maybe if they seared with some seasoning. 3.75/5 :: Volcano Roll - shrimp, cucumber, cream cheese, avocado, cream cheese, bacon and manchego - friend said bacon tasted different...not sure if bacon bits but she couldn't say...still thought 4/5 :: Guamuchilito - my friend who is vegetarian requested no shrimp, no crab meat so it looked like a Philly roll with the cream cheese. Still charged full price I'm not sure what makes it Mexican other than maybe the names, the cream cheese (in all the rolls) and "spicy orange sauce" accompanying the rolls along with shredded carrots... we all enjoyed our rolls Friends loved the simple mixed green salad and the clam chowder was decent...wasn't quite canned but not sure if made from scratch. Overall, 3.75 stars for Victoria's Kitchen Mexican Sushi. Good try averaging $23/roll and nice size. Menu does have variety but limited vegetarian: salads and one pasta primavera unless you ask for a Mexican sushi roll without the seafood. Family-run restaurant with friendly, attentive service. Krystal, our server did a great job with answering questions or double checking with her boss. Even one of the owners stopped by to ask how we enjoyed everything. Ambiance is cafe style (probably from the former business) with booths and plenty of tables...Mexican music playing with some Selena (heart) and Los Tucanes de Tijuana (of La Chona). Located in a small strip mall along El Camino Real...plenty of lot parking and nice, OUTDOOR seating. Average p/p with t/t: salads, soup, Mexican sushi, 1 drink and dessert $50. Will return to try other items when in the area. Note: Breakfast served as they open at 8am

Fish and chips
Gonzalo S.

This review is solely based on the fish and chips. Someone recommended the fish and chips and I went there just for that and it was legit. No frills, just solid pieces of cod with a good crispy, well-seasoned batter and crispy fries. Nothing mushy on the plate. Service was excellent and you could really feel the family-owned energy. So while I can't comment on the other dishes, I can say the fish and chips is legit and just as good as other pubs or restaurants in San Mateo so give them a try!

Decided to try this new spot out for breakfast this morning. The menu is small but has the basics. I believe the coffee had a hint of cinnamon which I very much enjoyed. Good and friendly service. The breakfast burrito got a thumbs up from the table. I thought the breakfast potatoes on the VK plate were a bit undercooked and lackluster. However, the bacon was crispy and pancakes were nice and fluffy.

Mar & Tierra Mexican sushi

Food was really good! We over ordered but glad we did. We ordered the calamari, mango ceviche, fish tacos were one of the best I had and the Mexican sushi (Mar & Tierra). Our server Chris provided great service!

Barnes Asada Tacos

The menu offers a seafood dominant fusion of Mexican and Asian flavors. There are a lot of dishes and combinations that I haven't seen anywhere else. Everything looked interesting. We had the Shrip Empanadas, Torre Suprema, a serf & turf sushi roll, and their Carne Asada Tacos ( can order one at a time). Their in-house flan was a great way to end the meal. We will definitely order that every time we come. Everything was delicious! The service is helpful and friendly. Highly recommend! Will be returning soon to try more dishes.

We came here on a spontaneous stop, found this cute restaurant. Order the VK sea platter... omg we are coming back. To eat this platter there. Unfortunately we ordered to go. We imagine how much better to eat there.

We ordered one of the Mexican sushi rolls which was way bigger than expected, the skirt steak appetizer, and the VL Michelada. Everything was tasty and looked good. Victoria even came out to greet us hi at our table. Definitely a boss baby!

Spinach Salad with Grilled Prawns

Had lunch with a friend at the newly opened Victoria's Kitchen (located at the site of the former Whispers Cafe). The restaurant was clean and bright, and offered both indoor and outdoor seating. We were greeted right away by our friendly server. The menu is eclectic, offering steaks and seafood alongside selections of what they call "Mexican Sushi". Honestly, it was a not puzzling as many of the offerings seemed a bit upscale for the cafe decor, and it was hard to determine what the restaurant's identity is. Nevertheless, the food at the other tables looked good so we ordered. At the server's recommendation we had the spinach salad with grilled prawns and the jambalya. Complimentary sliced sourdough baguette and seasoned olive oil was also served. Both portions were generous. The spinach salad was very fresh, lightly dressed and the grilled prawns were tender. The jambalaya included chicken, mussels, and prawns. It was very tasty, albeit a little salty to my taste. I think it could've benefited from a little more heat in the form of cayenne pepper. The food and service will have me going back, but next time to try their breakfast menu. It'll be interesting to see how this restaurant evolves.

I've been three times now. Truly the best breakfast burrito I've ever had. Service is always super kind and friendly. I come here occasionally to lesson plan or grade school work and treat myself to breakfast. It's becoming something I truly look forward to once a month or so.

Today I was able to meet my friend here for lunch and since it was a weekday we got a table right away at noon. To our pleasant surprise there was a lunch special offered at the back of the menu. For $17 you can a item from column A then B. I went with teriyaki beef (+1) and gyoza. The lunch special came with rice, tea and miso soup. I order the yuzu drink too. Everything was so yummy! The decor is cute with many lucky cats near the entrance and around the sushi bar. Near the back there is a huge display kawaii, anime and robotech figures. I can see kids enjoying looking at them. Looks like they have a private room option that is narrow and long with many 2 seater table side by side, maybe they open it up when they get busy. They have a parking lot that can exit through the back is what my friend told me but I found street which has a 2 hour limit. I saw a car with a parking ticket so I'm guessing they do enforce it. I had got there early so I checked out the super cute Bird Garden store next door if you have time to kill

I still would not consider this restaurant authentic, but I did enjoy the semi-Americanized Japanese food. My family shared: * Lion King roll: snow crab and avocado topped with baked salmon, spicy aioli, tobiko, scallion, and unagi sauce * Papillon roll: hamachi and avocado topped with seared hamachi, jalapeno, spicy aioli, and ponzu sauce * Salmon teriyaki * Tonkatsu cutlet * Chirashi bowl 1 star off: The only item I did not like was the Butterfly roll because the spicy tuna was way too spicy. The best deal is their lunch special bento boxes. A protein entree comes with a small maki sushi, salad, and miso soup for $17.

The restaurant itself is beautiful, and I loved their choice of dishware. It truly is in the little details that make this restaurant feel that much more special. There were so many food options that we ended up going all out, and it was all so delicious. Because it was busy, the food specifically the sushi took longer. We didn't mind the wait as we ordered food that was made in the kitchen so that held us over while we waited for our rolls, but I did overhear the table next to me was getting very frustrated as they said they waited over an hour for their sushi. Wow everything was delicious. We loved the soko Soko special with all 6 different dons as it allowed us to try a little bit of everything. The rice made everything so filling. Their fish tasted so fresh. I definitely recommend the Halami Beef Tataki, cut and cooked so nicely, it was such a savory and flavorful bite. With that, I really enjoyed their skewers, cooked to perfection with the perfect char. We cannot wait to come back!

No "excuse me" just a direct "are you recording?" And without giving my friend a chance to explain that he wasn't (he is just a heavy Pokémon Goer), the server went on "no recording is allowed. You can't do that" Blah blah. There are clearly better and more professional ways to handle this. And assuming customers at fault is not. We ordered two hot plates and two Kaisen don at $60 each. Hot plates are good. Kaisen don is very sad. That's the least fresh toro and uni I have ever had. My friend is not used to complaining, but I decided not to swallow it. After some back and forth, they offered to replace the toro and uni. Although it's an okay gesture, my friend was not offered the replacement-- not even asking, while we ordered the same set. The replacement didn't come with the average freshness I have experienced, but better than the original. Then we started to look at google reviews, only to find out that the ikura included in the don was completely missing. It was offered after we complained. But again, no apologies. For an expensive item with clear description of the content in the menu, I don't know if it's a mistake or not. Btw, our Kaisen don doesn't look like their official picture at all.

We really recommend checking out their off menu items (they will hand you a hand-written note when you get there) because the chef is just clearly so talented. Here are the highlights: * Ankimo Nigiri (off menu): Have to be honest, I was actually pretty scared to try ankimo (Google said it's monkfish liver - like who even dare to eat liver ), but I'm so glad I did. It wasn't fishy or difficult to eat at all, but incredibly rich and creamy. I'm obsessed!!! * Otoro (off menu): This was the star. The tuna belly was pure umami, super fatty, buttery, and literally melted the second it hit my tongue - really recommend ordering this one * Lobster Roll (off menu): As a girl who's on calories deficit, my body screams for help when I found out it had shrimp tempura (I tried to avoid fried food), but this roll was so damnnnnn savory! It's made of lobster, shrimp tempura and a combo of eel sauce, spicy mayo, and tobiko - no need anymore dipping sauce cause they were just phenomenal * Kaisen: This was a refreshing roll - made of tuna, salmon, hamachi (yellowtail), and white tuna. Shiso (perilla) really enhanced the flavor of the fish and brought fresh taste that I think is the best pairing for any sushi/sashimi dish * Woodside Roll: This was the only miss for us. It uses minced spicy tuna, which honestly ruined the texture and flavor of the fish. We prefer tasting the real meat rather than a mash :( Overall, we like everything that we order, and our bill came out at around $100 for all that we had (budget friendlyyyyy) and we were really satisfied with the sushi quality. My first impression on Redwood City location was that it really lived up to the hype. We ordered deluxe chirashi, oh baby roll and house warm sake, more than enough to feed for 2 (and both stuffed). Deluxe chirasi was just insane. The fish quality definitely top notch, and you can taste that. It had sea urchins, hokkaido scallops, shrimp, salmon roe and 5 types of fish belly (my most favorite part of the fish). Every bite just literally melted in my mouth, and they were incredible fatty and delicious. You get what you pay for. Oh baby roll was also delicious, but luckily we tried it before the chirashi (or else it would turn into a disappointment - since the chirashi was phenomenal). It's just a basic roll, stuffed with ahi tuna and avocado topped with seared salmon, you can skip it if you want. House warm sake was a surprise. I like it more than I thought. All the dishes are interesting and very flavorful, service is pretty quick as well. I've tried the Veggie Tempura and Agedashi Tofu from the bites section. Both are delicious even though these are fairly simple dishes, as expected. Tempura is oily as expected and is something which I skipped the next time to try some of the many nicer items they have to offer. It's crispy and delicious- and simple, what you'd expect from a tempura. All the vegan sushis are awesome and I especially liked their Veggie Tiger Roll and spicy veggie roll. None of the ingredients, like cream cheese overpower the flavors - everything is well balanced and each ingredient stands out uniquely on its own. Yum! It's a cute and small restaurant and they do not take reservations- only walk-ins. So I'd suggest going with some time in hand or going at an odd time. It wasn't too busy around 1:30 pm and we got a table for us pretty quickly. There's a big parking lot - so it isn't an issue there.
