I've been in a little bit of a workout rut with the same classes for awhile now so I've been trying…read moreto switch it up lately. I also am trying to get out of the mindset that a workout has to = cardio and so I found myself at my neighborhood Pilates Studio, The Pilates House. I've taken 3 classes and 2 privates with 5 different instructors (shout out to Amanda, Lila, Karen, Haley and Kate). While all my friends who go here seem to have their favorite instructors (and all different favorites), I've really enjoyed all of their classes. I plan to sign up for more of their classes and try other instructors as well. I've left all their classes feeling like a got a great core workout (among other parts of my bodies) and wondering what took me so long to jump on the pilates train. it's a small studio so there's typically one class of 4 people at the same time as a private at the other side of the studio. Only 4 people in a class at a time means that it can be quite difficult to get into a class, especially as the most popular workout times (8:30 or 9:30am). I've been trying my best to book a class weeks ahead of time, but it still isn't easy to get in. I have had luck with putting myself on the waitlist for classes so highly recommend giving it a shot. And I was told if there's a class that works best for your schedule AND it has an opening you can get a regular spot, but it's hard for me to commit to a certain time and day of week with work and kids. I haven't seen a class later than 12:30pm on the schedule so would be great to see some late afternoon and early evening classes added to the schedule at some point. I'm eager to commit to Pilates at least once a week with the hope that I can get a spot in class each week!

I have belonged to this fitness center on and off for 15 years and am a huge fan…read more No, it is not a deluxe health club and spa facility, it is a good, basic gym with everything you need to get a fine workout: plenty of cardio and weight machines, exercise mats, jump ropes and other tools for calisthenic work. There are freshly laundered towels and a basic locker room with showers. The water fountains are cold and there are hanging TVs that are tuned to radio frequencies so you can watch and listen to a variety of TV shows. The price is $75/month, or something like $60/month if you pay the annual fee. All in all, pretty good value for access to all that equipment. There is also childcare available for $6 up to an hour and a half, which seems pretty cheap to me, especially given that so many people rave about its quality. They have started offering a few group fitness classes, but I can't speak to those other than by saying that all the classes are early morning, and there isn't much variety. I am not giving it five stars because I think its day pass rate is expensive ($15) and wish it provided a punch card option for people who can't work out regularly, but would nevertheless like occasional access to the gym. I would also like more variety of fitness classes (spinning?). Nevertheless, I recommend this to anyone looking for a low-key, no-fuss gym.

I reached out to all the local park districts and found their facilities supervisor, Shawn, to be by far the most responsive and very easy to work with. I paid for the bday party before event seeing the space, but was so impressed with the beautiful gym, track and party room when we got there. They also have a workout room that looks pretty nice. It ended up being the perfect spot for our party and I wouldn't hesitate to book it again in the future. I even suggested it to a friend planning a basketball themed bar-mitzvah, but unfortunately they don't allow alcohol in the space. I've been back recently with my son for basketball open gym since it's one of the few local gyms currently offering times. Thanks to the pickleball craze it's becoming harder to find open gym time for basketball, but they have it here at TPAC and the times (located online) are pretty convenient.

**Update: JEN!! Totally different place with Jen at the helm. Better music, better pace n power,…read moregreat chatter! No wonder Jen's classes are sold out! ** I've been to Spynergy twice now and plan to go back often in the future. I live in CA but visit the North Shore where I grew up often, and Spynergy will be part of my local exercise routine. This studio has a great sense of community around it. Many of the riders seem to know each other and there's always lots of happy friendly pre- and post-ride chatter. The instructors tell personal stories during the rides, and when I went just before Christmas they had a keg of beer outside on the sidewalk for everyone to enjoy on the way out. That was really fun and a total surprise! The bikes are nice: new, easily and intuitively adjustable and equipped with electronic read outs for pace and power. They pack 45-50 of them in a small air-conditioned room but it's not too crowded. The only less than awesome facet of Spynergy for me is the music. I know that's an instructor variable, and Jen is definitely better here. Yet the two times I've been it has been sprinkled with a good amount of old 1980s stuff and "white radio rock." Like you could definitely run into some Hall & Oates, Johnny Cougar, and Elton John. That can be okay once every dozen workouts I guess but when Cat Stevens is the beat you're trying to catch, you just turn up the tension and ride on your own, I guess. SoulCycle has playlist ownage over Spynergy!

During my search to find a new spinning studio in the North Shore (RIP Flywheel) I discovered…read moreSpynergy on Yelp. I went to sign up online for a 9:30am class with one of the owners, Jen, the very next day and discovered that even the waitlist was full. The sign of a great spinning class? I was determined to find out and so I booked a class with Jen a full week later and scored a bike (phew). I arrived 10 minutes early for class and lined up airport security style with a few dozen women outside the studio. Thank goodness it was a "warm" winter day (by Chicago standards) because no spinning class is worth standing in the cold for. The infamous Jen herself made her way thru the line to say hello to everyone. As soon as she saw me (not a typical member of her cult) she asked if I was new and welcomed me to Spynergy. Loved the warm welcome! There's nothing fancy about Spynergy (especially in comparison to flywheel & some other spinning studios), but doesn't make it any less of a good workout. Jen had amazing energy and after a few minutes on one of her bikes I understood the cult following. The music was good, but I would have loved some more current hits. Then again the ages in this class ranged from women in their 60s to New Trier students (why were they in school?) so she did a good job of choosing music that appeals to everyone. The minute I left Jen's class I booked it again for the following week (the schedule opens online one week in advance) so clearly I was a fan. I've also now tried Michelle's class, which was also a good workout. They have a large TV in front of the spinning studio where they show you which song they are playing. I'm surprised they don't use the TV to play the actual music videos, but perhaps they do in the other classes that I haven't had the pleasure of attending (yet). The walk in rate for a class here is $20, which is a bit steep for spinning, but if you buy a series of classes it averages out to almost just $13/class. Great deal based on the workouts I've experienced! I'm still bummed that Flywheel didn't cut it in Highland Park, but do think I"m going to be a very happy spinner at Spynergy.
