When we arrived, I was initially denied entry because of my outfit. I was wearing pasties, which are legal under Ohio law, and I had worn the exact same outfit during Pride without any issues. The inconsistency in how the dress code is enforced is incredibly frustrating. What made the situation even more ridiculous was that I was initially told I could enter as long as I put on a shirt over my pasties. So I got a shirt, only to then be told that the shirt had to be buttoned. At that point, it felt like the rules were being made up as we went along. This is a gay bar, not a church, and I've personally seen men walking around shirtless inside on multiple occasions. If there's going to be a dress code, it should be clearly communicated and enforced consistently, regardless of gender. Unfortunately, this isn't my only complaint about Twist. The bar is frequently overcrowded, and it often feels like the LGBTQ+ community is becoming an afterthought in a space that is supposed to exist for us. I have absolutely no problem with straight allies enjoying queer spaces, but when those spaces become dominated by straight patrons, it can take away from the very community they're intended to serve. I've also had an extremely unpleasant interaction with one of the bartenders who wears glasses. On a previous visit, I attempted to have a conversation with him while entering, and he was unnecessarily rude and dismissive. There's simply no excuse for treating patrons that way. I genuinely want to support LGBTQ+ establishments, especially because we have so few dedicated spaces to call our own. But being an LGBTQ+ bar shouldn't mean getting a free pass on poor customer service, inconsistent policies, or unequal treatment. My biggest issue isn't that Twist has a dress code. It's that the rules seem to change depending on who's enforcing them and who's wearing the outfit. If shirtless men are welcome, I don't understand why a woman wearing legally permissible pasties is treated differently. Twist has the potential to be a great place for our community, but management really needs to address the inconsistent enforcement of its policies, the attitude of certain staff members, and the importance of maintaining a welcoming environment for the LGBTQ+ people this establishment is supposed to serve.

The most recent Mr Leather Cleveland contest was held there and there is a basement bar that is for the leather crowd. The owner of the club is Gay and is into leather himself. He owns another bar in Akron called Cocktails Akron. The place is not real glamorous or plush but it is very functional. It is friendly and fun. Upstairs though, is a mixture of people from all races, age, gender and backgrounds. I really love this mix. Cocktails has a small stage and sometimes, there is a drag show on Saturdays but not every Saturday. On Fridays they have male strippers. Wednesdays are popular for the karaoke and they get a nice crowd. On Sunday, they have an excellent potluck dinner with a lot of people participating. Seriously, it is one of the best potlucks I have seen in the Gay clubs here in NE Ohio. At night on Sunday, they have karaoke again. There is a very large covered patio that is heated during the colder weather. There are two pool tables. There is tons of seating at the bar and there is plenty of high-top tables with chairs. They have very good security in that there are close circuit cameras inside the club and outside all over. After placing three different orders until I hit on something the bartender could manage and leaving a generous tip, I had to make a second request for iced water to go with my almost non-existent cocktail. With about 25 singers, Lori the DJ used only the minimum necessary filler music so the rotation was as quick as it could be. You can expect to sing about 3 songs during the 4-hòur show. The club looks unimpressive from the outside, but inside it's clean, cozy and welcoming to everyone. There's a pool table, keno machines. The bar staff are attentive. Drink prices are on the low end. The restrooms are clean. They come in 3 flavors, male, female, and 2 private, large, unisex restrooms(which are also wheelchair accessible) The dance floor is set up for a great light show. Definitely put Square on your must-see list. You won't go wrong.
