Alfa Counseling is the best mental health practice I have ever been to. Because I have a past…read morehistory with trauma, I had been in need of a counselor whose work is trauma-focused. I was able to find that at Alfa. Through my time at Alfa, I worked with two different counselors (the first left due to maternity leave). Both counselors were professional but also incredibly kind, caring, and compassionate. I worked with both on EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, which I had never tried before becoming a patient at Alfa. This was not an easy process for me to work through, but I felt safe and supported by my counselors. Alfa's office space is the most well put together I have ever seen in a mental health practice. From the waiting room to the bathroom, the entire office is bathed in serene hues of blues and soft greens. Sound machines also fill the air with tranquil sounds. The space is so peaceful and calming. It is the perfect environment in which to care for one's mental health. I found it quite easy to book appointments and I appreciated the use of an online portal that I could use to securely communicate with my counselors in case I needed to reach them outside of their scheduled availability. All of my communication with Alfa employees was extremely prompt. If you are in need of a new mental health professional, I cannot recommend Alfa Counseling enough. Alfa, in all aspects, has far exceeded the performance of every other practice I have ever been a patient of. I am disappointed that, because of outside factors, I am no longer able to be a patient at this practice, but I am so thankful that I found Alfa when I most needed it.

This was my first experience with anything mental health-ish. I have to say almost all the staff…read morewas very nice. I probably got helped, my depression was/is situational, not chronic, so it's hard to tell. BUT this place is run terribly. I got charged $3200 A DAY, when the average place is 740-2000 a day. For this price: *The food was yuck. Out of 6 days, 3 meals a day, they had maybe 5 good meals. And I am not picky. The ones that were lived on cereal. *They don't even give you a plastic knife, but sometimes serve chicken breasts or a pork chop? I ate with my fingers. Come on, people, did you ever hear of a cook book? There are recipes for cut up meat! *The cafeteria was filthy. I actually asked for a cloth and wiped the tables down. And the same stuff was on the floor day after day. I think they are under staffed. The food line took so long that the last people only had about 15 minutes to eat. *The rest of the place was very dirty too. One big clump of hair was out in the main atrium for 4 days at least. I took a used towel, wet it and wiped our room all along the walls where you could see the dust piled up. *We had the overflow from the detox ward and the psych ward. There were some really crazy people. Which is scary when both men and women are in there and you can't lock your doors. *My roommate went to bed early one evening. When I came in about 11:00pm I was standing by my bed in the dark, in T shirt and undies when the door opens and a GUY and girl start to come in, shining a flashlight at me. He backs out and she says "There's going to be a guy coming in." No, he ALREADY was in. So they come in and spend 8-10 minutes shining a black light all over everything. They woke up my roommate, who was sleep deprived. Why couldn't that have been done at 8:00 or 9:00? And check first, before a guy comes into girls' rooms! *There were no balls or sports equipment, besides about 30 of those baskets with a handle (like lacrosse sort of) and a broken whiffle ball. $3200 a day and no football, volleyball, a ball for 4 square, chalk to draw hopscotch, nerf balls, hula hoops. The pictures show treadmills and exercise equipment. Nope. Never saw any. *30 minutes for visits?! Twice a week?! When some people drive an hour or more to visit? * The place has a very high ceiling so sound echoes. If you are in rooms close to the TV it is impossible to sleep before 11:00pm. White noise would help but the heater/AC only runs every 20 minutes and just when you are getting soothed to sleep it shuts off. And when they come in to check on you every 15 minutes the opening and closing of the door wakes you up. How about curtains in front of every door? *I was really pressured to stay a couple days longer. They even told me I could be taken to court! I was not in my room, curled up in a ball. I could name everybody there and was at therapy and walking laps and doing puzzles, etc. But when I saw how much they charged I understood why they wanted me to stay! I really hope they work on the cleanliness of the place, and the food.

BEWARE!!! This place is an absolute nightmare. I voluntarily checked myself in because I had the…read moreworst insomnia. I hadn't slept once in more than a week. My therapist recommended to go here (which later when I got out she felt horrible for my experience and said she will never recommend this place again). The nighttime nurses are horrible and very mean (specifically the ladies at the front desk). They treat you like you're trash. They are very understaffed. The food is inedible. Everything is dirty. I have no idea how this place is still open. This is not at all the experience I thought I would receive. There's patients that were obviously put in the wrong part of the hospital and at one point someone who was crazy backed everyone into the corner and was threatening us all and the staff did nothing. The "classes" are a joke. The doctors go many days without talking to you and when they do it's for like 3 minutes and then shoo you away. Honestly I could go on and on. The topper to all this was I was pregnant, very hormonal and they still treated me this way.

This is for anyone who is considering care with Emerald or has just left care-- it is not normal to…read moreleave an intake feeling hopeless, horrible about yourself, and completely flooded with trauma you can't process alone. It is not normal to have your therapist rush you through the intake because she spent the first half of the session lecturing you about a topic she presumes you to know nothing about (automatically made a lot of assumptions about my disability). It is not normal to tell your therapist about this life changing rare disorder you were recently diagnosed with (the entire reason I moved to Ohio and have to completely restart all care with new providers) and for her to dismiss it and say many people on her caseload have this condition that she seemingly knows nothing about. I promise you- they don't and even if they did-- their experiences are not my own. It is not normal for the therapist to talk the majority of the intake (yet no introduction or explanation of services) and tell you you need to explain your trauma in 1 sentence or less, then act annoyed that some trauma can't be concisely explained in 1 sentence. Most of all, it's not normal for a therapist who barely got to know me, did zero assessments and offered no compassion, to then end the intake by attempting to diagnose me with a personality disorder. I'm going to be incredibly vulnerable in this review in the hopes of saving someone else from the horrible experience that I had, because truly it is downright dangerous and harmful for therapists to 1. Practice outside of their scope of competence and 2. Flood their clients asking about trauma with zero reassurance or empathy offered 3. Diagnose a personality disorder without getting to know my personality My therapist, Nichole Evans, claimed that the diagnosis was due to suicidal ideation at age 13 and the fact that I can't form relationships. She did not get background on what was happening at age 13 but said that the only explanation for suicidal ideation is a personality disorder. No idea where she got the impression that I don't have solid relationships. Prior to my move to Ohio, I had a great group of friends, a really healthy relationship with my therapist and psychiatrist. The reason I don't have relationships in ohio is I JUST moved here. I also had a working diagnosis of cPTSD, OCD, and social anxiety. She didn't explore any of those diagnoses and said she's not actually able to diagnose my personality disorder, just that I have one and in the meantime she'll diagnose major depression. No PHQ9, no actual assessments or questions to determine I'm depressed. The extent of my depression is just sleeping a lot due to pain from fibromyalgia and hypermobile Ehlers Danlos. Besides that, I'm not depressed and actually consider myself to be thriving despite the conditions. When I told her that I don't agree with the diagnosis, especially given what I know about the disorder, because I don't ever want attention, she said "REALLY? because I'm getting the opposite impression, you're just begging for attention this whole meeting." When I said, "really?" She replied, "you're barfing up your life story, it's too much." For those who can't see the irony or absolute idiocracy in this statement, a therapist telling a client they're barfing up their life story and begging for attention is DANGEROUS. I don't have a personality disorder but what if I did? And took those comments personally and felt hopeless, suicidal, etc. The diagnosis felt like a threat (claiming she's unable to actually legally make the diagnosis but that she'll get it on my record so it follows me everywhere). I canceled my following appointments and tried to speak with the office but it's impossible to get through. Furthermore, after emailing that I was upset with my experience, the therapy scheduling called to try to set me up with someone else. No one acknowledged the harm that was done, no one apologized and I had left a message that I'd be available all day to discuss my experience. Im writing this review hoping to save someone else the horrible, downright offensive experience I had. This is a vulnerable community when we are going to treatment and deserve to be treated with compassion, empathy, respect. I was rushed through my intake so quickly that it was less than an hour and most of that was Nichole lecturing me about the reasons she believes I didn't get disability (fyi, I just moved here and am establishing providers and getting genetic testing completed where I couldn't in my home state. Im fully aware of the process and the steps and did not ask for her input). If you are considering Emerald, please, go elsewhere. This is *not* normal nor is it ethical or competent care.

It took over two weeks and multiple messages to receive a response to an important billing question, and I had to call the office three separate times. When you call, you are directed to a voicemail that, in my experience, does not appear to be regularly monitored, making it extremely difficult to reach an actual human being. What concerns me most is that this is a psychiatric practice. If I had been trying to reach my provider about a medication issue, side effect, or urgent concern, waiting over two weeks for a response would be completely unacceptable. When I finally received a response, the provider did not acknowledge or apologize for the delay and instead focused solely on defending the additional $200+ charge. I felt completely unsupported and that billing was prioritized over patient communication and care. I will be receiving care elsewhere.

My therapist was amazing but the other staff I met were condescending, rude and non empathetic to the suffering of others. I sat in the waiting area one day and watched as this woman sat on a sofa rolling around and crying while the receptionists carried on a conversation about what they were doing this weekend. The woman did this for a good hour and I came out of my appointment and she was still there. She asked me where the restroom was and I pointed her to it. The receptionists thanked me but continued to ignore the woman!? The billing department never sent claims to my insurance and I'm still dealing with improper billing. The like to try and scam you to pay more so I've been having to call my insurance monthly and make sure everything checks out. Do not go here! Find someone that cares about your well being and not money.
