I'm sure if you're looking at this you already know this is the oldest Post in Texas. This one is open to the public, however my dad is a member. It's getting more and more difficult to find places with Touchtunes juke boxes, so I was stoked to find one here and immediately started playing songs. We had a couple of drinks and talked with the bartender. It was a quiet time while we were there and quite nice. read more

Simple review. The building is a historic landmark so beautiful although could use some TLC. It's in the Riverwalk so nice little view. Drinks priced as they should, poured as you'd expect from a BFW, Eagles or Moose Lodge. They had dj and band playing on the weekend astronomy and evenings, good available as well. Cheap beer... Yes! ... Always cheap beer at VFWs! Well maybe they don't have the cheapest beer here as this is a little more of a tourist stop being right on the River Walk Museum Reach... but you do get a discount if you are a VFW member, which I am a Lifetimer thanks to my mother signing me up while she was actively involved with the original VFW at Canyon Lake in Satller. Post 76 is open to the general public and they welcome everyone with a smile... just note, many VFWs are member only posts just to serve our Veterans of Foreign Wars. Please thank them for their service. Freedom is not Free! This post host several events during the year, including Fiesta San Antonio, so keep your eyes and ears open for something in the future. It does get crowed during events tho so just a warning They have a big band stand and beer garden outside along the river. It's really cool place to just hang out. I like it a whole lot better when it's a slow regular night. VFW Post 76 is the oldest post in Texas, chartered June 26, 1917, by veterans of the Spanish American War. In 1946, They moved their post to this beautiful Victorian house located on the banks of the San Antonio River... and just in this past decade, the River Walk was expanded to what is now known as Museum Reach which makes this such an amazing location. According to their website: "There are rumors of two ghosts, which also adds to the houses mystic. Members attest to seeing a girl running up and down the stairs and an old man who likes to move furniture. They both share the name of "Charley"." Perhaps I set my expectations too high given all of the rave reviews. It is a divey place right on the Riverwalk north of downtown and the beer prices are cheap but it wasn't as funky or cool as I had hoped. They were holding their Halloween party so some of the patrons were in costume which added to the "atmosphere". The band had one of the worst sound systems I have ever heard - it makes those PA systems on subway systems sound clear. Overall it is worth the trip out here but not sure it is the five star experience that many claim. read more

At this point there is no part of The River walk that hasn't been touched by expansion in some way. But as you walk closer toward the area near The Ten-Eleven or The Luxury you will see one particular spot, untouched by time. The VFW Post 76 is a historic place with a lore all its own. It is a place on any given night, especially on weekends where cold beers, jukebox music is blaring and people are having a good time. It is an old building reminiscent of the one you will find in the King William area. Outside there are chairs and depending on the event the place is either packed or lightly inhabited. There is ample space on the grounds to walk with your drinks. It serves as a good intermediary between some fancy watering hole and an icehouse. But mainly the VFW is known when it hosts certain events like the various food truck competitions and the numerous festivals it has here. Patrons that frequent this place can run the gamut from Pearl Brewery Apartment dwellers, bicyclists, hipsters, parents, lounge lizards, professionals, seniors looking for cheap Lone star beer etc. Whenever you go you are never sure what crowd to expect. There is a very laid back vibe intermixed with a quirkiness to it. On one end of the floor you might see a couple straight out of an Urban Outfitters Catalog and just across the way you will see seniors sporting Lite beers, like it was some dance. At night the VFW takes on a romantic quality accompanied by the lights that guide The Riverwalk way. In addition the servers and patrons alike are usually a friendly crowd. The beers are cheap and the Selena cover bands are even louder. Contrary to what people have said finding a parking spot can be hairy since The Luxury and The Ten Eleven people park in the same area as well. The later you go the less you are inclined to find a space. It's best to car pool with friends, especially when they have events like The Taco Truck Showdown. Either way there is fun to be had by all here. The VFW Post 76 is a unique spot. It feels like a place untouched by time but relevant to any generation that goes here. The beers are cheap but it is rich in history and charm. ps. The history alone makes this a great stop in San Antonio adventures, however it's location on the Riverwalk takes this VFW to the next level. My husband & I are both lifetime members & self professed VFW experts. This-location is open to the public. We came by early on a Saturday afternoon with our kids. Drinks are SO cheap. They have karaoke and snacks but no food. Members were friendly which isn't always the case at lots of VFWs unfortunately. My husband is a seasoned combat Veteran from OIF and still has felt unwelcomed at several backwards locations which didn't seem to enjoy or welcome members under 50. I'm female so I rarely feel welcome at Veterans nonprofits. This one was different. Texas seems to treat female Veterans pretty well. Seems to be cultural. We loved the history & canal view. The yard outside was packed with tourists. We were inside because Texas is HOT! I think they have fun events & concerts here. Too bad they didn't have food though. My kids will enjoy the big yard when weathers better. They have free concerts outside on the weekends. read more

This place has become a home away from home for this veteran's girlfriend. The Post is open to anyone, but there is a special kinship between the veterans here. The truth is veterans have lived a certain life that people outside the military simply don't understand. This is the perfect place for them to find the support and camaraderie they often need after they get out. That being said, not being a veteran myself I love this place. It's often calm with good music on the jukebox, and friendly regulars and members. And did I mention the beer is CHEAP? They often have events going on with live music, and they are right along a part of the Riverwalk. If you haven't been here yet it is definitely worth checking out! read more

This is just a great place to come and hang out. Located right off the Riverwalk, this VFW is one of San Antonio's historical landmarks and is the oldest in Texas!! It's huge and has a lot of great people that are regulars. Yes, it is for veterans but it is open to the general public. With that said, drink prices do vary for general public vs if you are active duty or a member. Some days there are live music which is pretty cool because they perform outside. Some days they have food for sale.. that may be tacos or something. I can say, there have been plenty times we have been able to come and just hang out... for hours... sit and laugh with friends, watch a game or come and dance. It is on our must hit spots when we are out and about in the beautiful Alamo City.. read more

This is a really nice place to come by and enjoy yourself. The VFW is one of the oldest standing buildings. It is close to Broadway with lots of neighboring bars. Thry offer parking but if not available have street parking as well. They have cheap drinks along with great food. Turkey legs and street tacos, yum. They do have live bands that come and play and it is easily accessible through the river walk. The staff and people were all friendly. Had a great time. read more

Wow....just wow. If you've visited other VFW's besides this one, you'll understand why Post 76 is remarkable. Open to the public - and in a breathtaking Victorian mansion right on the San Antonio River - it's a true departure from the norm. Unlike many of the other reviewers here, though, I stopped by with the simple goal of rehydration in mind: I'd parked upriver, had strolled down to this point - a perfect location to revive for the remainder of the distance down the entire "museum reach" of the Riverwalk. So yes, it's a really lovely old structure, with very friendly people in and around it. I didn't ask for a tour - or get one of their reasonably-priced beers: instead, I purchased a canned soft drink with a cup of ice, for $1, then meandered back outside. A seat on the veranda was tempting; blaring music, however (on this evening it was 70's band Boston, not Tejano music), caused me to choose a seat farther away from the overly-efficient sound system. Chatted with a few of the "regulars": one, a lady there with her family, bade me welcome to the VFW; another, sipping beer with his two friendly dogs (" Liberty" and "Justice") in attendance, gave me a quick history lesson about the history of water recycling with respect to the river (I never cease to be amazed by the number of longtime San Antonians willing to share knowledge of their city with noobs like me - too cool!). I left rather reluctantly, having spent more time there than I'd intended. I'll be back, though, soon - and perhaps next time, I'll indulge in one of those bargain-priced cervezas, and some of the fresh popcorn! read more

A place for veterans, a place for families of veterans. Called the "White House" the Victorian architecture is a shining example of what's being lost all along the San Antonio river as new buildings begin to become common. As a veteran I'm proud of my fellow compatriots and here we can share stories and create new memories together. By the looks of many, many other amazing reviews, there's not much I can add about this perfectly divey, perfectly haunted, perfectly touristy spot on the banks of the San Antonio River. I will say this is a great location to throw an outdoor party which would include bringing your own bottle or BBQ. Jolly great times are had here on a regular basis and if you happen to be cruising your bike or walking after dinner, check out the architecture. You may even see a ghost! read more

Oldest VFW in Texas! This place is truly amazing! Situated right along the banks of the newly-expanded River North project, where the Riverwalk extends north from downtown. The decor is old military stuff, with two giant Howitzers sitting out front. The air conditioning is always at full blast indoors. It looks like the place used to be someone's mansion, but it has been beautifully restored. Victorian architect buffs will love this place! The prices are cheap. The beer is ice cold. There's often live music here, especially stuff filled with accordions! The staff is beyond friendly- they were super nice. The patrons are welcoming, and I know I'll certainly be back! The folks that make this place great to hangout along the River Walk is the employees who truly enjoy serving to the public and Veterans. Being a child of a veteran of Foreign Wars was greeted with such hospitality in this historical building. We enjoyed a couple beers sitting up stairs on the veranda listening to country tunes. They have a memorial room that was emotional for me as we celebrate soldiers life's for our rights and freedom. Prices are reasonable for this Beer and Wine establishment. Country tunes are the groove. Totally a fun place to hang out! read more

I've been here once before but the other night I swung by and let me tell you...the oldest VFW post in Texas was bumpin'. So it's right where the Riverwalk expansion is and it's really pretty down there now. The post is huge. I mean....it's a mansion so of course it would be but the area in front of the house is mighty large. It really makes you feel like you're at a plantation except this plantation is blasting Tejano music. The drinks are really cheap and the people are amazingly nice. I agree with Maxwell, this is a great place to take an out of towner. read more

We were only here briefly for happy hour, but really enjoyed the classic VFW ambiance. This place is oozing with character located in an old mansion and gives you that biker-bar feel. Beers were $2 or $3 on happy hour special so who is going to complain about he cheapest beers in town...and on the Riverwalk. I can imagine that seeing a live band outside in the surprisingly large stage area would be perfect. Home run! read more

It was a Lazy Saturday and not many around other than a couple regulars. Really loved the casual ambiance. Super cool spot located right off the newer section of the River. With a few new hotel projects and other goings on I am sure this part of the River will still be new, but not as tranquil as it usually is. VFW Post 76 is an awesome place to stop for a quick beer or two while strolling, bike riding or basically taking in all SA has to offer. There are some neat markers outside on the River and a few outdoor art installations under the nearby bridges. Our first visit was during the DTA Tour, a few daytime stops have rounded out our experiences. Great music on the juke box, plenty of seating, a nice cold beer selection too. There is not much shade outside, and man they do have their rules - but the place is awesome. Space for party rentals too. If you are feeling totally chill and low key, this is your place. read more

It's hidden back off of Avenue B right on the new Riverwalk expansion. The cheapest all-American beer in town and a friendly, but rowdy crowd. This is the definitive spot to watch a Spurs game. It's also a great spot to take out-of-towners. And hey, as the neon sign will tell you: it's the oldest VFW post in Texas! Pro tip: If it's a slow night, and they seem to have taken kindly to you, see if they'll take you on a tour of the place, specifically including the attic. Regardless of my state, I do remember that the beers were cheap, the people were friendly, the ambiance was awesome, and the Tejano was plentiful. VFW post 76 in San Antonio Texas is the oldest functioning post in our state. It's equally great regardless of if you are a veteran or not. All are welcome. In the hustle and bustle of the Riverwalk it's a great place to stop in, relax, have a cold beverage and enjoy the conversation with any veterans that you are lucky enough to encounter. My husband happens to be a veteran and served in Vietnam. I find that it's very good for him to be around other veterans when we have the opportunity. He doesn't ever share stories about his time overseas. Sadly, it was not only unpopular because of the military aspects of war, but many in our great nation were downright disrespectful to the men and women who served there. Sometimes as they were returning home or being dispatched, drafted or not..... Anyway- This VFW post is in a very well-kept older home and reminds me of a plantation style residence. All beverages are icy cold, and it's a beautiful environment. You can sit and watch barges go by on the river and during the holidays the river is lit with thousands of lights and barges full of caroling children! They also frequently have live music. It's definitely worth a stop. read more

The old VFD is definitely a place to check out if you've never been. Which, up until the river expansion this year, most people haven't. The VFW "canteen" is one of those places you kind of what to keep a secret, one of those places that if you learn about it then you're kinda "in the club". So, I guess I have mixed feelings about this place being "discovered" by so many folks due to the expansion, because I fear it might lose some of it's charm and mystique...or perhaps not. More the merrier! So, I'll get on with this review and share what I do know about the place. It's a cool place to just chill out with folks and kick back a few. You can hang inside the mansion, which is said to be haunted, or enjoy the fresh air outside on any one of the endless colorful picnic tables. When they have events it can get a little crowded but generally speaking the crowd can be comfortable to thin...depends on the night. Note: even though they have set hours, if it's super slow they will close early on occasion. The beer selection is pretty basic but still a good place to hit up. Oh! I almost forgot to mention the complimentary popcorn! I just think it's cool 'cause I like to see it pop. ;) VFW Post 76 should be experienced...if for no other reason, then because it's the oldest post in Texas. That's gotta count for something, right?
