I came here to volunteer, and to my surprise, there were even younger kids participating. I learned that the minimum volunteer age is 10 years old. Some students were volunteering for school service hours, while others came through different companies and organizations. We joined the second shift from 1pm-4pm. The session started shortly after 1pm with a briefing and task assignments from the group leader. All tasks were explained clearly. The leaders checked on us throughout the shift to make sure we were doing okay and to see if anyone had concerns. Halfway through the shift, we had a 15-minute break, and one of the leaders brought ice cream to celebrate a volunteer's birthday and shared it with everyone. I thought it was a meaningful way to celebrate a birthday while helping a good cause. We actually finished around 3:30pm, and our shift completed: - 5,451 lbs of food packed - 474 boxes prepared for the "No Student Goes Hungry" program supporting students from elementary school through college in Sacramento County. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating, and the facility was clean and organized. Restroom: clean, bright, and decent. Within all of this stuff, was a bunch of new and lightly used clothing. In the past I have donated clothing to my local Goodwill Express. However, I did some reflection and realized that all of the clothing that I donated was being sold for profit. Going forward, my intention was to donate to an organization that receives the donation(s) and distributes them to underprivileged individuals/families free of charge. Some research led me to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Upon calling to verify their hours (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 10am-1pm and Wednesday, 4pm-7pm), I gathered all of the clothing and hit the road on a mission to make a difference. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a Sacramento Food Bank employee who eagerly began to load my clothing donations onto a cart. Since a lot of the clothing consisted of dress pants and dress slacks, he proceeded to inform me about a program called "Job Smart Clothing." Job Smart Clothing is a program within Sacramento Food Bank that provides career appropriate apparel for underprivileged individuals interviewing for employment or currently employed. How cool is that? I'm not a representative for Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. However, I will say that they provide an awesome service to the community, and that a little donation goes a long way (individuals who benefit from their services often leave with 15-20 pieces of clothing per visit). Before you throw away that piece of clothing that you think is out of style or doesn't quite hug your curves the way that they used to, think about donating it to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services!

I am so thankful to be able to participate in the classes of my choice...and they never ask for money. The environment is warm and caring. Took my daughter to ReCreate because she loves doing crafts. We heard they have a crafting studio…read moreso we went there with that intent. Inside is a plethora of crafting supplies. It's like a thrift store for crafts. Most items are used and in good condition. We saw all kinds of yarn, wood, stamps, sewing supplies, and even birthday and Christmas items. Everything has is in it's own section but does take some time to look around, if you want something specific. As for the crafting area, it cost about $8 for 1 hour of crafting. They had tons of recycled items available for crafting. It did take us a bit to look around and decide on something to create. But once we did, we found lots of things to use. They did have glue guns to use but I didn't see paints, or sharp things for cutting. They also offer birthday parties in their crafting area. ReCreate is a crafters dream but an organizers fever dream. It can be a little hard to look but it's best to just take your time and enjoy the walk around.

The do psych testing when needed and also have a psychiatrist on site. They came to my house for both my older kids for CBT and they are still doing wonderfully after graduating their programs. This place helps answer all your questions about walking the special needs path. I absolutely love them

Hello. I am a River City Food Bank "food recipient". I come by for food on Wednesdays at the St…read more Matthews location. The staff does such an excellent job, I am reluctant to complain, however, there is an employee who makes my visits to St. Matthews difficult when I am able to come. I will not include her name, I have included her photo below. I am hoping someone in upper management can speak with Karen. Her treatment of food recipients is not consistent, she can be rude, controlling, and lose her temper with food bank patrons and also the the staff without provocation. Recently she singled me out from others waiting in line for food, I believe it is because I am Black/African American, she has taken a very inappropriate interest in me, and I have not caused any issues, and I do not require special attention. Compared to the other employees and volunteers she is out of control. She also has the tendency to touch me as I am walking into the food bank to collect my food without my permission. This makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. I would like to reiterate that all other River City staff and volunteers have been consistently courteous and professional to me and other food recipients. I walk to the food bank from Fair Oaks Blvd, and then I have to walk home with my food. I really need the Food Bank to be an emotionally safe place. Thank you for considering my complaint. Wouldve been better to put on a buy nothing group (dont donate to goodwill. They throw most things away) I wish they had activities for the homeless. I have a homeless friend and he says they do t provide things for him to do so he just walks around all day. It's sad

First the place is quiet, clean, and every one I met was super nice. Second they don't make you feel like some other not for profits, you know like they are doing you a favor so you better be happy with what ever you get... No, not here. I actuality genuinely felt like these wanted to help people. A great feeling. The resources here are impressive. I couldn't believe that they cost little to no money out of pocket. Of course the over draw back with anything of this type is the amount of people in need and the a ability to support that need. So for some services, very few I have to add, there is a waiting list. Lighthouse is a great great place. A place that has filled me with hope and ambition.

Found a baby bird fallen from nest in backyard and was unable to re-nest it. After a few hours of…read moremonitoring the makeshift nest and no sign of mother bird, I decided it was time to take this little fellow in. This place is very kind and reassured me he was in great hands and once ready to be released into the wild, he would be released close to where he was originally found. They also were able to identify what type of bird he was in seconds (mourning dove!). The woman at the front counter was extremely kind and thankful that I brought the cutie in. I turned around and located a very large male opossum who had been hit by a car and left with severe facial injuries. Due to him suffering I was at a loss for how to help him. I looked up wildlife care facilities and up came across wildlife care association. I am so grateful they are open 7 days a week. I drove him to the location and the front counter lady was so sweet and took him without questioning. I just had to fill out a form. She gave him pain meds and advised they will find the best outcome for him from there. I am so grateful this was available to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
