Update as of 1/5/26 The Medical Director personally reached out to me to discuss this case. He was very understanding and helpful, also passing my feedback onto the doctor. We talked through everything and came to a resolution. This isn't usually my experience in dealing with businesses so I really appreciate VEG's policy to take every complaint seriously and to address issues with their team so they can improve. I brought my 1.5 year old cat Gourdie here on June 28 2025 because he was not eating and was showing signs of pain. The vet techs were absolutely wonderful and the facility was impressive, but that's where my positive experience ended. After being there for a couple of hours and giving him supportive care and bloodwork Dr. Bogart finally came over to speak to me for the first time and the first thing she asked me was if I wanted to call my husband who was working because she "doesn't like repeating herself," not because what she was about to say to me was shocking and traumatic. She proceeded to tell me that Gourdie was in very bad shape and likely wouldn't survive and that I needed to consider euthanasia. She didn't offer me much of an explanation and the most disturbing part is she didn't offer me any other options whatsoever. She didn't say "this is going to be very expensive but you could do A,B, or C." Just that I should euthanize my barely 2 year old otherwise perfectly healthy cat. I was in shock and beyond upset so the kind vet tech offered me a private room where I was able to call my husband to leave work to meet me to say goodbye to our beloved cat. When he arrived I explained what happened and because he was in a different state of mind he was able to look at this situation objectively and say no, we need much more information first. Dr. Bogart reluctantly came into the room and much to her displeasure had to repeat herself. She deadpan said the same thing to him that she did to me and he pressed her for more information and other options. Only then did she say that we could do an ultrasound and surgery but it was going to be expensive, so we then asked how and where. "Well he'll need a blood transfusion to stabilize him first." "Okay...how do we do that?" "Well cat blood is very hard to find." "Okay...how do we start the process of finding who has his blood type available?" "Well we have to make some calls to see if we can even find it." "Okay...can you...do that?" and that's how the conversation proceeded, having to pry information out of Dr. Bogart who proceeded to show no empathy and no willingness to help. Thankfully PASE had his blood type and we transferred him there. Gourdie did end up needing 3 surgeries for intestinal blockages, 2 of which we had performed at Wissahickon Creek Vets who I highly recommend, and has since been diagnosed with PICA that we're managing with lifestyle changes and Gabapentin. While it was extremely expensive, our cat community came together in a huge way and we were able to fundraise to save his life. I can't believe I was in a room saying goodbye to my young cat because a vet that I trusted with his life told me to put him down without explanation or options. He's now happy and healthy and living a full life. I've been in cat rescue for many years, and I run a non-profit cat adoption cafe, and I cannot imagine ever treating people this way. It's simply abhorrent. People deserve so much better and so do their beloved animals.

Last Tuesday my pup had surgery to remove a benign tumor at his primary care. That went fine but then Thursday rolls around and he decides to go bananas. The lack of walks and sedation fully wearing off made him into a wild dog. Running back and forth. So much so that it ripped his stitches out. So we're sitting on the couch at about 10pm and see there is blood puddling under his leg. Like any good dog parents we freak out. Normally we would do PenVet but for some reason we called the primaries number after hours. That's how we got directed to VEG. We spoke with the receptionist there and she said bring him on in. So first off this is like no other vet I've been to. You wait right in the middle of the action. It's not like others where you sit for an hour before anyone speaks to you. I was taken immediately back and a nurse came over to me right away. The doctor was going from patient to patient and you could see it all in real time. There was no oh the doctor will get to you later. They gave him a shot and I was able to hold him and keep him comfy on a couch while he passed out. Everyone was more than willing to explain every step and this may be a little too much for others but I watch him get prepped for his stitches. After that I felt like I was being a nuisance even though they assured me I wasn't. He got so relaxed he pooped on the operating table. Once it was finished the nurse was bringing him over and he just started peeing all over the nurse. The nurse said that's been happening all day was not phased. They put him on a bed in front of the couch I was on while he came too. Every one kept stopping to check on him. One nurse even cleaned his ears while we waited. I had mentioned how much he refuses to have it done when awake. You felt the love of the job from the staff. So we left at about 1:00am and 20 minutes of that was him waking up. They told me there is another one opening up in fishtown under the El. Cost was a little over a grand. Given the nature of ER visits That is NOT terrible. Highly recommend this place for emergencies.

VEG is a very special place. Our dog Sasha was sick with what we hoped was just a stomach bug, so we made a same day sick appointment with our primary vet. After some testing there, our vet suspected that Sasha had a disease called IMHA and recommended that she immediately be transferred to a veterinary hospital. They recommended a few options, VEG was geographically the closest and available to see her immediately. Our vet communicated with VEG for us and got them ready for us to bring her. Upon arrival the staff was friendly and welcoming. The overall energy at VEG was very positive and warm. We were incredibly emotional because of how suddenly everything happened and VEG had tissues for us and walked us through everything. We came up with an agreed upon game plan, they provided us an estimate with a high end and a low end. They did what they could to make the treatment cost effective while also prioritizing our Sasha girl's well being. They set us up with a room and made sure we were comfortable. They had water, coffee and snacks on-site which was a really nice touch. Everyone from the doctors to the techs often asked if we needed anything. The huge advantage to a place like VEG over any other veterinary hospital I've experienced is the fact that they are open concept. We were able to stay the entire time and the staff explained everything to us to ensure we understood everything that was happening to our girl. We know and trust that the doctors and techs that cared for us did everything they could to help make our girl comfortable. We are specifically grateful for Dr. Anderson, Dr. Faust, Chris, both Sammies, Cat, and so many more people that provided us and our girl care (sorry for any name misspellings). Every person from the reception staff to the security guards were so kind to us through the entire process. Sadly, Sasha's situation escalated to the point of needing a specialist and so we did get clear details on all of the options available to us. Dr. Anderson's guidance and ability to explain her recommendations made our decision making process very easy. Even after we left, we had a question resulting from our interactions with the new doctor and staff at the specialist center. We called VEG and they talked us through it so we could understand and they helped calm us down a bit. The staff is so supportive and caring. The team at VEG truly spoiled us on the veterinary hospital experience and now our standards are high. With any and all future vet hospital and emergency needs, VEG will be our first stop. We hope not to need them in the future but are so very comforted by knowing a reliable and trustworthy option is available here in the city. While we are not in the position to do so right now, with these resulting medical bills, we are looking forward to being able to donate to and support VEG in the future.

On July 23,2023, I took my dog to VEG. She was whisked away like they were actually going to do something. Then the doctor sat down to tell me the cost of the diagnostic tests would be $1700. I asked what tests. I didn't get an answer. What I got was another estimate for $1010. The x-rays show an enlarged heart and liver. Which I knew. The dog's 17 years old. I told them her primary vet already told me that. And I quote here, "Oh, she has a primary vet?" Yes she does! The most frustrating and agonizing part of this was trying to find out what was wrong with Nyla after the paid for tests. Her blood pressure's dangerously low. Okay. So what are you going to do? No answer. Her blood sugars are low. Okay, so what's the plan? Here comes the tablet again to figure out the cost. It will be $6500. I spent 3 hours trying to find out what was wrong with my dog, but I knew how much it would cost in like 30 minutes. She had sepsis. I researched when I got home that all her symptoms were signs of sepsis and can be diagnosed with a simple blood test. But it demands immediate attention, attention Nyla didn't get because the doctor was figuring out the cost. We reached a cost of $4500 to keep my dog alive overnight until I could get her out of there. I paid the money. I sat by Nyla's oxygen cage for 3 hours. Patients came in and none of them were talking to any vet about cost. Their pets were being seen and they were waiting patiently for a diagnosis. Nyla's blood pressure went up to 113 from 87. But the vet told me the machine is probably wrong. If the machine is not accurate, how will you know what to do for her? This vet tells me "Well, you know how machines are." I am frantic. This "doctor" says "Well you can take her now." I say "after I paid you $5000?" The woman smirked!!! Finally the doctor says Nyla's BP and glucose has to rise. I don't see how they are going to be able to check her BP if the machine doesn't work sometimes. I should have taken my dog out of there, but the vet kept saying she needed 24 hour care. When I left her blood pressure was 113/79 on the not trustworthy monitor and her glucose was 95. All through the night, I received texts that there were no changes. I prayed hard. At 7:30am, I called to see whether Nyla had made it. She was alive. I was getting dressed to go get her when the same doctor called saying Nyla had passed at 8.01am after saying she worked on her for 30 minutes. That's pretty much impossible if the dog is alive at 7:30a This was just my experience. All of the other patients' owners came in got serviced and not once did I see the doctor stop treatment to work out an estimate. I have no idea why Nyla and I were treated differently. On the morning that they murdered Nyla, I came to see her one last time. The receptionist came in to ask what I wanted to do with the remains. I choose private cremation, picked an urn and paid for it. Again, no receipt. No mention as to when I could expect the remains or even how I was going to get them. She left a little white remote with instructions to "just push this button when you leave." I probably was suppose to push it and walk out. Instead I waited. The cleaning person came in. My dog was still on the table. A couple of more things: They said they'd call Nyla's vet. They never did. My vet called them and they never got back to him. I paid about $5800 and never received any receipts. I called to request them. I was told they'd be emailed immediately. She placed me on hold, came back on the phone to say it would be an hour because their internet was slow. This was at 7am on July 25. It is now 10am and no receipts. I asked when would I get Nyla's remains. They'll be shipped to me in 7-10 business days, like a package coming from overseas. The most important thing when you're dealing with illness is trust in the people who are administering aid. With personal observation and after experience, this Veterinary Emergency Group is not trustworthy. Take your pet someplace else.

    Beautiful Finnegan

Two weeks ago my Kings Charles Cavalier's health declined seriously in the middle of the night. He had been suffering from from neuropathy in his back legs and he now had a temperature and was yelping in pain. From the moment we walked in to VEG on Walnut Street, Philadelphia, Dr. Megan and her team of nurses treated us with such love and were so comforting. She listened and gave me the options for moving forward. Finnegan was at the end and we decided to put him to sleep. It was a heart wrenching decision and my sweetie died in my arms. They also arranged a cremation package - ashes, footprint and hair lock - that arrived a few days later. To have such wonderful people with you when you make end of life decisions for your pet is so heart warming. Thank you all so much for your kindness and understanding. With gratitude. Renee Jones

This is the hardest review to make ever. I chose to take my pup to VEG for an emergency because I had previously visited another location in Jersey. When you call ahead, they send you a link so that you can provide your pets information ahead of time for check in. We arrived to a fairly empty office. One of my favorite things about these VEG clinics is that you get to stay with your pet through the whole time you're there. We met Dr. Caldwell and explained our pups history. She immediately moved to try to stabilize him. She explained to us what she suspected was going on, the two routes we would take based on how he's responding to treatment, and a break down of the immediate next steps. Sadly, our pup declined and we had to make the unthinkable choice of putting him down. The extreme compassion, professionalism, and kindness from everyone in the office was truly unmatched. We never expected this day to take the turn that it did, but this whole team really did their best to make it as comfortable as it could possibly be. I wish I could give them more stars.

    Leo receiving wonderful care!

Prior to surgery, the doctors at VRC indicated that successful surgery would get us 1-3 more years with our pet. During surgery, they were able to remove most but not all of the metastatic growth so it was recommended that we move forward with chemo and radiation which would extend his life by 3-6 months instead of the 1-3 years initially stated. Well, our dog died exactly a week after surgery, 1.5 hours after my mother passed. The exact situation that we were trying to avoid unfolded as our worst nightmare. Unbeknownst to us, VRC operated even though our dog was anemic, and as a result, he spent the last week of his life in pain and internally bleeding. The morning of his passing, he was vomiting up blood clots and there were clots coming out of his nose. He was in shock and urinated all over my husband as he carried him to the car to rush him to our closest Vet ER (not VRC). At the ER, we were told it was too late so we made the impossible but humane decision to hold our dog until his last breath. After arriving home, we couldn't even mourn the two deaths we just experienced because we had to clean up the blood from our carpets, curtains, floors, walls, etc. before our young children got home from school so we didn't traumatize them. We paid VRC over $10k and all they did was kill our pet in the most traumatic way. On top of that, they haven't once reached out to check on our pet (he was supposed to have his sutures removed two weeks after surgery but obviously we didn't get to do that, but no one called to find out why) or express their condolences for our loss. I would and could not ever recommend this vet practice to anyone. So disappointing and heartbreaking.

His case was so complex that no one could give me a real estimate of his chance of survival, only that it was slim. Research after the fact, on my own showed that everything he went through put him at a 12% chance of survival. It was a very bleak outlook, and we were literally taking everything one hour at a time. When I continued to research, what happened with Jalen was extraordinarily rare, occurring in less than 0.01% of dogs, and is something that few vets see in their entire career, let alone a case with a positive outcome. Jalen was transported from MVA to Penn after developing a pneumomediastinum due to his severe pneumonia. Upon arrival, he was rushed into emergency surgery and that was when I first met with Dr Tarbutton. She explained to me the severity of the situation and was very transparent, yet empathetic the entire time. She did not make any promises but explained that despite their best doctors ready to work on him, it was an "all hands-on deck" situation. He made it through the surgery, but I was called to "say goodbye" since he required mechanical ventilation after the fact, and only 30% of dogs who go on a ventilator ever come off. I was only able to visit for a few minutes; it was the hardest almost goodbye of my life. Jalen was on the ventilator for 36 hours. I was able to visit him daily, and Dr. Tarbutton and the Critical Care staff were so patient, understanding, and caring. They updated me by phone twice per day and were sure to explain exactly what was being done and why. They answered all my questions and never rushed or dismissed me. After 36 hours, he was able to come off the vent, defying his first set of odds! After he was off the vent, his status was guarded, he was critically ill, and the staff was careful to keep me aware that the situation was touch and go at best. I appreciated their candor, as sometimes it is easy to lose sight of how severe the situation really is. During this time, he was treated with several antibiotics, as the pneumonia he had appeared to be antibiotic resistant, was on high flow oxygen, and several other medications to keep him comfortable. He remained in the critical care unit for a total of 7 days. Each day, it felt like we took 2 steps forward and 1 step back. He survived emergency surgery, ventilation, and the pneumonia began to improve, however each day he developed something new, as is often the case with multiple system failure. He developed a blood clot in his back leg, pressure sores from being sedentary for so long, and a heart arrythmia. But every step of the way, the critical care team had a plan and kept me informed. After 7 days, it was decided that he was going to be sent home. He was breathing normally, and his secondary issues were not enough to keep him in the hospital. And, as you can imagine, a 7 day stay in the critical care unit with emergency surgery and mechanical ventilation was not cheap, and he was stressed from being out of his environment, so it was thought best by everyone that he be treated at home and as an outpatient. The staff kept me informed of the updated total cost of care each day, so there were no surprises at discharge. I was terrified when he came home and probably called and emailed more times than necessary over the next few days, but the staff was always helpful and patient, never making me feel like I was being too much. Over the next few weeks, he was seen as an outpatient by the critical care team, internal medicine, surgery, and cardiology teams. He was put on anticoagulants, underwent debridement surgery for his wounds, ultrasounds for the clot in his leg, and overall checkups. Each time he visited, he looked better and better. And now, after 7 weeks, all that remains of his ordeal is a scar on his chest where his pressure wounds used to be. Truly miraculous. Jalen fought for his life with the help of the extremely skilled doctors at Penn Vet. I truly believe that he would not have survived had gone anywhere else. He is known by most everyone at the hospital; case is truly rare and miraculous. I cannot thank and praise everyone involved in his care enough, you all helped save my best friend!

From the initial phone call to Robbinsville, who were able to make me an appointment at Maple Shade…read moreNJ within two weeks, to the friendly front desk personnel, to Dr Karen Meltzer, everything was Class A. We brought our Doberman here due to a racing arrhythmia. Knowing DCM and having lost three others to this disease, time was of the importance. Dr Meltzer was able to perform both a EKG and an Ultrasound, to get the best information on why, what and how to treat our girl. We were able to be in the exam room and watch these tests being performed. That was much appreciated, to see the care they took with her. Both Dr Meltzer and Shannon were wonderful with our girl. As suspected by us, she was diagnosed within DCM/V-Tac. Appropriate medications were given to us, with her being dosed before we left. Scripts were received, Wedgewood compounding pharmacy received another script, for Pimobendan, which we already had an account there. All in all, things fast tracked once we arrived. Anyone with a Doberman and having gone thru DCM; knows the significance of catching this early and starting treatment. Although there is no cure, their life can be extended. We left there with a follow up appointment in two weeks, to do another EKG, to ensure the medication is working for our girl. Walked out with a complete written report explaining her condition, test results and everything needed to know about this diagnosis, including her medications. Honestly, having had three other Dobermans go thru this situation; this is the first time we were able to "see it all" with the testing. That is so important to us and very much appreciated they allowed us to be in the exam room. This was the most personalized experience we have ever had at a cardiologist appointment. Thank you Dr Meltzer and Shannon, as well as the staff.
