Memorial Park doesn't look like much from the Portland St. side. just saw trees, grass, a children's playground. there's 2 blocks worth of "park" here. didn't look at the further end which may be hosting all the sports area and assembly area. read more

Before summer began the city's newsletter bragged about a "refurbishing" of the tennis courts. Great idea as it was much needed! At the very least a cleaning was necessary and so was an updating of proper signage for tennis court usage, rules & etiquette. Was looking forward to being able to reserve the court for scheduled matches. Then I wondered how long it would last before it fell into disrepair again. Not too long! Sadly for those of us who love the game and use tennis courts with respect , the Albany Memorial Park courts are now again being used as dog parks; social venues (that include bringing meals & drinks) for pickleballers ; play grounds for soccer/volleyball/skating/etc. Foul language from both young & older people. This park would get a higher rating if facilities were used as intended. Maintenance of the property can only do so much. Park users must learn to be Responsible & Respectful people too. read more

This is not only a great park, but a place where the larger Albany community comes together. Albany High (on the same block) and youth sports leagues use the play fields by day, while the dog people use them in the evening. There's a picnic area on one side and on Solano Stroll mornings, the Albany Lions (or is it the Scouts?) have their pancake breakfast. Then there's the nearby swimming pool (to be reopened soon) and of course the Veterans Building. The centerpiece of course is the playground area and plenty of lawn to hang out and enjoy. In between, there's the July 4th event, the fall concert series, tennis and basketball courts, and miscellaneous happenings. And as a former member of the Parks and Recreation Commission, I had a small influence regarding the handsome reconfiguration of the current playground area and surrounding grounds. At the same time, I really miss that great old tall metal spiral slide. Thanks to State requirements, a lot of the "fun" play structures (including long chain swings) are been replaced by the safer plastic configurations with the springy ground material below. Since my career is in the safety field, I can't complain too much, other to say that I'm none the worse for wear, after years of various cuts, scraps and bruises. Yet, when I take my son back to the Midwest over the holidays, I won't be teaching him how to "bumper ski"! read more

DOG part of park? Pitiful. (Rest of the park is quite nice.) City of Albany, are you mad at dog owners and their dogs? Is there a 'reason' why no benches are provided in the dog-park area? And no water for the dogs? Being a park for "Veterans" would seem to include providing seats all over the park & being that it's public would seem to also add up to the same (the ADA requirement and all that). That there's no access to water for the dogs---even though there's a faucet, just on the other side of the fence ( the 'key' is removed) --is quite unfriendly. Why close the park from around November to January--- during the rainy season? Can't you just put down wood chips as El Cerrito does for the dog park on Lexington (behind Safeway), as Berkeley does for Ohlone, etc. Sadly, this all feels more like an anti-dog park. read more

I actually prefer this dog park to El Cerrito, which is dirty and full of poop hidden in the bark. It would be great to have water, benches, and a double door, but for now I am happy to bring water and have a clean grassy place for my puppy to meet other beautiful dogs and play. read more

Sunday was Superbowl. Sunday was also sunny. So... The guy and I walked to Albany Park. It wasn't deserted, surprisingly enough. Kids played. Moms *and* Dads hung out to watch their little darlin's scamper about the swings, the "walking structure", and the picnic tables. There wasn't a radio or television in sight. Nor did I see earbuds... In other words... Memorial Part is bigger and better than virtually any televised sports event. This I believe... I've been using this park forever. When I was a kid, there was a nifty wading pool located near the Albany pool. And yes, the kids did use it. The slide was big and scary. My own kids tested their mettle on it circa 1967. And, of course, there were the teetertotters. I once read that more childhood accidents were caused by teetertotters than any other piece of playground equipment. Me...I would have put my money on the slide. Now...the equipment is safe. The restrooms are usually clean and open to the public. Occasionally, the water fountain is clogged by small children floating boats in Old Sandy Bottom...but usually the fountain, too, works. So: *Kudos to Albany for keeping a nice park open for all of us, lo these many years. *Kudos to the Albany Boy Scout troop who plant trees for fallen heroes on the periphery of the park. *Kudos to Eric B. (SHOUT IT OUT) for being on the Parks and Recreation Commission. *Kudos to Albany parents for caring more about their kids than about the Stupid Bowl. (Sorry..."sports" don't include vegging in front of the tv, IMHO) *And kudos to the park planners who included tennis courts, a swimming pool, a sports field, and a dog park in the very same block. * Oh, and congrats to the kids who have their birthday parties, weddings, concerts, and other life events here. A great park! Lots of open space to run, a well-equipt playground (with that springy ground material under bark chips), and an extensive seating and grilling area - there's something for nearly everyone. Large groups, or several small ones, could easily be accommodated. Bathrooms are available, another important feature. A small trellis area provides shade for watching tots play, or just enjoy the shade trees and benches. Great place to bring the family for a picnic! read more

Every September on Wednesday nights the city of Albany has an event called Albany's Music in the Park. The music is different every week. For the 2016 season for this free event on the 7th they played vintage dance band swing music with singers period on the 14th it's the Latin sound. On the 21st it's be New Orleans R&B with a Twist of Blues and 50s rock and roll. And on the 28th it will be the funk band singing Motown and soul covers. This event is free free free free free and the park is full of people. Bring a blanket something to keep you warm bring a big picnic spend the evening sitting out at the foot of the stage You Can Dance it's an amazing time and the city of Albany sponsor is it this year the city along with Hoppy, Distributors of Growlers to the door filled with local microbrews is co-sponsor. It's an amazing Enterprise fantastic product. This is fun for the entire family. And be sure to bring food cuz it'll be a nice little picnic out the evening like a dinner picnic. Come down bring pizza and beer and enjoy the nice weather and lots and lots and lots of people. And kids of all ages. read more

This park has been our neighborhood park since our kids were little and we'd take them there to play; Dozens of moms, dads, nannies and kids use this park daily, and during the summer months it's pretty packed. Play structures, picnic areas and the Vet's building itself, which can be rented for receptions, etc. Also part of the park is the newly renovated softball/little league field. Albany High school girls softball has their home field here, and boys little league has it during the late spring and summer. This spring, a possible Title IX controversy emerged, which was handled adeptly by the softball parents. Fortunately, the superintendent knew how to avert disaster and awarded first priority use to the girls. The amusing icing on the cake was his decision (unprecedented) to throw out the first pitch for their first game. It's a beautiful field in a nice park in a friendly neighborhood . Oh, and I love watching my girls play fastpitch softball...I'd rather do that than almost anything else. Updated: the girls team played 2 of their regional playoff games here and word got out to many of the community that have younger girls who play and lo and behold, about 200 showed up to watch the girls on their new field..I am sooo proud of the community support in this town. PS. they won the final too...played on the Cal field. woo-hoo! read more

One of the best park in East Bay. I love Albany for being Albany but this park is just gorgeous, wide, accomodates a lot of people- big field for playing soccer/ football in th rear, basketball courts, to left, nice grassy area where events are usually held with picnic benches and kid playground in the front, and my favorite... 6 lighted tennis courts!!!!!!! First come, first serve, except some spots are reserved for tennis camp. These courts are awesome! Very well kept! read more

It's one of our daughter's favorite go-to "pay gon" --- her speak for play ground. Great enclosed toddler playground and open bigger kid playground. Equipment is in good shape, modern, and safe. Lots of kids abound here both on the weekend and during the week. Once we heard about 4 different languages spoken. Missing one star because it would be nice if it weren't right on the street and it was nestled amid some trees, but it's a nice neighborhood playground nevertheless. read more

I love this park! There is a little something for everyone in this nicely groomed park! While the bathrooms are not pristine, they are well stocked with hot water, plenty of paper products and SOAP, which i greatly apprecitae. There is a small fenced in area for the littlest tikes with two slides, two swings and a sand area. The larger area has a variety of slides and 3 that scared the $*#%out of me when I went down with my lil guy so beware, although 'twas fun! My lil man loves to explore and has plenty of space to roam and people watch. There is a dog park, tennis courts, baseball field, tons of lawn area, a teen center, community center, community indoor and out door pool and friendly parents who watch their kids. I love this park!! read more

Nice tennis courts, and on some weekday evenings during the summer, there's live music. You'll need a passcode to keep the lights on in the evening ($60 for 6 months). The bathrooms aren't great, so bring your own soap! read more

This is a really nice Park in Albany, great playgrounds. My 2 year old son loves coming here. There are 2 separate playgrounds, one for smaller kids that is fenced off and a bigger one for the older kids. It's well maintained, and they have bathrooms (which is a major bonus after drinking too much coffee, but they could be a little cleaner). read more

It's worth our walk across town to visit. The kids love the play structures and running on the expansive grass.

this park is very cute, with a small play structure for littles and a bigger one for olders, and lots of grass. the vets bldg is charming (very old skool, cute!) HOWEVER the bathrooms are D-I-S-G-U-S-T-I-N-G!! otherwise, nice place to have lunch and let the kids play. as long as they don't have to go potty!! read more

Dog park next to HighSchool is open 11-8 pm. Best time to go is 6:00pm. Avoid mid-day weekdays - I was warned but didn't listen, hope this helps others. There is a group of nervous passive-aggressive dog-owners that all go at 12:-1:30 who are VERY intense, stressed out and offer constant unsolicited suggestions - they are a pack that go every day with their pack of dogs - if your dog so much as looks at their dog the wrong way, they gather to discuss it, then issue their ruling against you, then your dog. Not much fun for the dogs. So go between 5-7 pm when there are more calm and experienced dog owners. The dogs can run around, have fun, and their is none of the dog-shaming that you'll see with the mid-day week crowd. Hope this helps. read more

It's a nice park but the park bathrooms aren't adequate for the crowds there during larger public events. They are just too small and the city NEVER adds porta pottys. So if you can deal with that or are just taking kids to the playground or playing tennis for an hour it's fine. read more
