Main course normally I have a steak when we eat out, I thought I'd break the habit so I ordered chicken breast stuffed with garlic and basil, wrapped in pancetta services with new potato's (which were slightly roasted and amazing) along with a creamy tomato and chorizo sauce. Howevver we promptly returned the week after and immediately fell in love with the place. What an incredible experiance. First thing you notice is the size of the place. (Tiny) It genuinely feels like a hidden bar from the prohibition era with incredible decor and music that suits the Blues/Jazzy environment to perfection. Being here is like traveling back in time to the 20's when alcohol was illegal and small secret bars like these were littered across America. The theme is consistent with the menu hidden inside a book that's handed to you upon arrival. So mesmerized were we with the vibe and conversation the cocktail taste bud memories are hazy at best. It's probably the only bar and restaurant to also be a maze, its HUGE and other than outdoor seating it surely doesn't feel like you're entering a restaurant. They have 3 sets of two doors but strangely only one is in use and there is no sign for this, once inside you basically go back on yourself into a dark, dingy, horrible corner where they have the lift. After leaving the lift, finding the main restaurant is equally as puzzling and difficult. Admittedly, the decor in the restaurant is unique and innovative and true style of The New World Company restaurants, albeit I preferred the Media City branch, there were many similarities with trees, huts etc. It to me felt like an old bank or barn but refurbished, possibly even a potential wedding venue. I dined here during an ongoing promotion where they offered 40% off the food bill in January and ordered my regular Chicken and Chorizo Hanging Kebab which would usually come to £13.95. I did notice the menu to be slightly stained and sticky however service was reasonable with the waitress (Becca), seems to do a lot, despite not being overly busy she seemed to have a huge workload due to them appearing understaffed and she still worked in a friendly and polite manner which is commendable. They do also offer a set menu all year round however this still at £12.95 for two courses this still ends up costing slightly more than the 40% off promotion, so I have no idea why I was offered it. Also, I found it strange that they labelled dairy-free and vegetarian on both menus but only NG (non-gluten) on the regular menu, meaning if you did order from the set menu, you'd have to cross-check between them. Sadly the slight cleanliness issue which arose with the menus seemed to continue with the cutterly (ready on the table) which also wasn't entirely clean sadly which also is uncommon by usual Botanist standards. I did enjoy the majority of my kebab, while I do feel the garlic seemed to taste more overpowering and heavy than other branches, I did also find the meat on the ends to taste a little chewy and overcooked, while the middle was fine. It still had some good flavours and was rather enjoyable and certainly warranted good value for money, even at 50% off. Certainly not the best branch of The Botanist I've been too, but my food was still pretty good, as was most aspects of my experience. I do feel a lot of small improvements do need to be made, however, only warranting a three-star rating for now.

The decor inside is typical Botanist style, it does look good and the staff are pretty friendly (although some of them don't seem to be wearing a uniform which meant I didn't even realise someone worked there when I was waiting for a staff member!) It can get pretty busy at peak times, especially in the run up to Christmas, I did originally try to visit on a Sunday afternoon and this place was full, I do recommend making a booking if you can, they do require a credit/debit card for this but they only charge you if you fail to attend, which is a flat £5 (pretty fair, especially considering they can only run at limited capacity to follow government legislation). I was offered a free bottle of prosecco as part of their loyalty scheme which can be redeemed two weeks before (or after) one's birthday, I feel this is a nice gesture, I don't really like prosecco so it's a shame it couldn't be swapped for anything else other than a soft drink, especially considering most of their cocktails are much cheaper anyway - that is an issue with Head Office and it's still a nice gesture to offer something for free. I ordered the gluten-free chorizo and chicken kebab, it seems the recipe has been changed slightly, there seemed to be more garlic butter actually on the chicken rather than pouring it over (which has been replaced by a paprika oil to give it a slight kick), it gave it that extra flavour and tasted really good, the chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly, the chorizo was just OK, and the fries on the bottom were good. My friend, who ordered the fish and chips was also pleased with her dish, she mentioned: "It was almost perfect, however, the curry sauce was a little watery." I also like how they now have a digital bill, not only is this better for the environment but it means I can have a receipt emailed to me and also fill in feedback on the tablet which they serve it on. 4* - The food was really good, and this is one of my favourite locations in The Botanist chain and I will be returning. A couple of flaws mentioned but all in all a pretty good place to grab some food.

I enjoyed trying the various wines (the smallest amount is often £2-3 so you can try a good four wines on a £10 card pre-payment) and could even tell that some of them tasted different, so am basically going to be earning my MW in no time. They also do a few little snacks - my fave baba ghanoush and some rather tasty crisps, although the brown olives tasted too sour for me. Tap water came chilled in a delightful glass bottle. Although I now work for an independent wine merchant in Didsbury and am considered a bit of a fussy geek by my friends, I have longed for a good wine bar in Manchester pretty much since I arrived in town over 6 years ago, well before wine was a big thing for me. A few places have attempted it, half-heartedly for some, but none had so far succeeded. Then came Salut wines, first baby business of a lovely couple who like me love good wine and thought it deserved proper representation in the City Centre. An ambitious project that was, not without hurdles. But tenacity paid off and behold, a superb, clean, warm and welcoming wine bar where odd ins once was. Enomatic machines a-go-go, 32 wines are available by the glass at any point in (opening) time. That's 16 whites and rosés and 16 reds. Thanks to these machines you can enjoy a vast variety of wines, all of which are way above your house plonk from most pubs/bars/restaurant. And that's not all. 3 measures are available: 50ml, 125ml and 175 ml. The first one is my favourite. I can play to my heart's content and try a lot of wine before it's time to call it a day. Most wines are between £1.20 and £5 for a glass but you can also try some of the fancier stuff that would NEVER be available by the glass otherwise. Risk-free. Whilst they do not cater, a range of nibbles and tapas plates are available and it's perfectly suitable for a light lunch or diner. Cheese, cured meats and Mediterranean veggie plates, all made with very good ingredients. Music is top notch, not your average lounge "elevator" type nor your bass-boosted frenzy. Blues, jazz, pop, electro... To sum-up, great atmosphere, best wine selection in town, excellent service. The bottle prices to take away are on the steep side of I'm honest but I'll put that down as the location.
