Vermont Violins - A collection of violins in store

Any musician (mostly string players) should count themselves lucky to have this place around. I got…read moremy first violin here when I was 7, and I've been a dedicated customer ever since. While their selection isn't as broad as most websites or larger stores, they're always happy to order stuff if you ask. Most of the people who work there are musicians themselves and can help you with just about anything, whether you're a beginner or an experienced player. I went in with my mom a few years ago when she was buying me some sheet music for my birthday. The woman behind the counter heard us mention the word "birthday", and we left the store with several free tote bags in hand. The owners (Oren and Kathy) are extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. They will set up times where you can try out bows and instruments in the shop and help you select what you want/need. They can help with all levels of players, especially beginners. Oren lent me a very nice viola for a few weeks when I had a solo concert and needed something with a better sound, and I spent several hours in their Burlington shop (just one of their other locations) with Kathy one afternoon trying out new violas... she was happy to put up with my indecisiveness, get sheet music for me to play, play the violas that I liked so that I could hear them, and make lots of suggestions (if I remember correctly, she studied the viola at Juilliard). If you have high-end instruments, you may be better off going to Boston, New York, or Montreal for repairs and whatnot related to your instrument, as they have more skilled luthiers with more experience with high-quality instruments. Some of my friends have complained about the selection of instruments that they have and the quality of bow rehairs that they've had done, but those aren't reasons to ignore VT Violins. But, for a little violin shop in Northern Vermont, they do a fantastic job. Their prices are reasonable for the merchandise they sell. It's a little more expensive than the same items from online stores, but I like to buy from them whenever possible, as they are an amazing local business.

    Festival of Fools

There are probably at least six shows (street performers-buskers) going on each hour, with different types of acts (magicians, break dancing, circus/jugglers, musicians, etc. All worthy of a $10-$20 tip. The performances last 30-40 minutes each. I think the festival lasts three days, but this year I was there for Sunday. Excellent performers from around the world (one guy I was was from Australia). Between the acts you have all of what Church Street has to offer: all different types of boutique shops and dining. Something for everyone in the family. The shows are also kid friendly. If you're visiting the area during a Festival of Fools weekend, you don't want to miss it. And locals will enjoy it as well, since most of the performers are from out of the area. I will continue to attend as long as Burlington continues to have the festival.

Now, these are not the usual folks who share their talent in the Marketplace during regular days. These buskers come from all over the world to join in Burlington's Festival of Fools. As far as I know, this is the Festival's second year, held second weekend of August. And it is organized by the Burlington City Arts. Schedule of performances are written on a board outside the Firehouse Center for the Visual Arts, at the end of Church Street. Volunteers, I presume, hand out more info about the festival and encourage everyone to cast in their votes for their favorite performer. The festival culminates with the awarding of the King/Queen of Fools. Our family favorite was Brent McCoy, a local of Vermont. We agreed that he had the most carefully thought-out gig. His ad libs were right on and they didn't sound too desperate. Even when he asked for tips toward the end of his performance, the man had a speech of a confident orator. And yes, he was really, really good with his tricks, too! I think he has a video on youtube.com. Anyway, the other performers were equally entertaining. There's the usual fire-eating trick, women in trapeze, unicycling, music with ordinary things, hula-hooping and the like. Then there's also the unusual scorpion-in-pants while catching a bowling ball with steak knives on fire using the head kind of stunt. Truly lots of clowning around going on here!

I have taught at Advance Music, Rock Camp, and many of the Youth Programs at 242 Main while I was the assistant manager there. I've also had my instruments serviced by most of the local luthiers (it's good to know who's good). On one hand, we are very lucky to have as many good options in Burlington as we do, but when students and band-mates ask me who to send their instruments to my first recommendation has always been Nowa at Randolin. Here are some of my instruments that have been repaired by Nowa: Solid Body electrics (bolt on, neck thru, 6 string, 7 string, 8 string) Steel String Acoustics (six string, 12 string) Ukulele Stand up Bass Here are some of the specific repairs he's done: Fret work Bridge resets Pickup wirings Fingerboard re-glues Acoustic instrument pickup installs Here are some talking points about my customer service experiences with Nowa: 1) When asked specifically for a quote, he's always produced one and come close to staying within said quote. 2) His breadth of knowledge and credentials allow him to do a wider range of repairs than other luthiers in the area. 3) He has always treated me and my repairs like a priority (when I've asked him to stay within a deadline). I understand this is difficult to do with a repair que as large as his. 4) He has stood by his work, sometimes beyond the 6 month warranty. Any time one of his repairs hasn't held up he's made it right. 5) Because let's face it, money matters, he has always had the most reasonable invoices of any of the luthiers I've done business with. Again, we have many good luthiers in the Burlington Area. Nowa is always my first pick.
