What started as a request to use the restroom and hopes for a bit of sustenance, turned into a wonderful chat and mini-tasting with some friendly folks. On the drive back from Montpelier to Portland, following the pilgrimage made by many a New Englander to witness solar eclipse totality, I had to get off the road, out of traffic, and find a restroom stat. It was divine intervention that made me pull off that specific exit. It seemed dead amongst the nearby businesses in that little enclave, but a hint of human activity pulled me towards Vermont Spirits. After my coy request and use of the restroom (what a relief!), I stood at the bar and asked about their line of products. Barkeep Meg was nice enough to allow me to sample some of their offerings, including the super secret juice! Also really appreciated being able to talk with the chief, Randy, and exchange eclipse experiences. Really friendly folks, and it truly kept my sanity in check. It was our first time going and I will definitely be a returning customer when I am back in the area. All of their spirits are worth the trip! My sister had their vodka and said it was amazing. We came back a couple hours later, after a nice lunch at Simon Pearce, and a tasting at Whistle Pig, and they still weren't open. I'd say call ahead, but I'm more likely to say "Don't Bother". They don't respect customers enough to put a sign on the door saying Sorry, we're closed due to unforseen circumstances, we will open again at so and so time. I guess that it's easier to just not show up for work. Not a good way to run a business. read more

Terrible whiskey. For the states oldest distillery you would think they would have something with more than 2 or 3 years age on it. The guy tending the store was pretty unfriendly and condescending. If you don't mind going about 90 min North try Smugglers Notch Distillery. Way better IMO read more

We had a great impromptu tasting at Vermont Spirits Distillery, which we found out is the oldest operating distillery in the state! Our host explained their distilling process, the use of maple syrup in some of their spirits (like the Vermont Gold Vodka), and their range of Gins (maple free). We enjoyed the tasting and came away with a bottle of Sugarwood Gin. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the Quechee area. read more

I stopped in to this small shopping plaza to see the Vermont Toy Museum but "Spirits" caught my eye and I decided to check it out. Nice space and a friendly helper who was more than happy to provide samples of the liquors on offer. I tried the vodka and ended up buying a bottle of that and then one of the "Number 14 bourbon whiskey." Interestingly, the vodka is neither potato nor rye. It's fermented WHEY. It tastes like smooth and clean vodka to me. Delicious. read more

We went to the Cabot store and saw the distillery and figured 'why not'. Truth be told we'd already brought wines from winery tasting inside of the store. But what's the harm in trying out a vermont booze before leaving? Oh my! Our lives changed! The coppers gin is OUTSTANDING. You can tell how rich the botanicals are, the flavor the body.. then came the No.14 (named after VT being the 14th state?). I almost passed on tasting it because "I'm not a whiskey person". Didn't he change my mind??? Here we are rationing out our shares until another VT trip comes along! Definitely overpriced- but I guess they know we will come back because of the product they deliver. You must check this place out!!!! Some of the best spirits I ever had! They have a 1791 cocktail that is essentially a premixed old fashioned. The vodka is made from maple syrup and their No. 14 bourbon Is smooth with a maple finish. They also sell three types of Gin. The fun names are all based on Vermont history (No. 14 for the 14th state in the union; 1791 for the year Vermont joined the U.S.; Vermont Gold because vermont gold is maple syrup). Great little distillery! Really nice chatty folks working there. And they have a really nice variety of spirits. Amazing gins, vodkas, and bourbons. And unlike a lot of small distilleries their spirits are all really smooth tasting. And with a really great antique mall next door the whole plaza is worth a stop. read more

Nice tasting room and some great offerings. The No. 14 bourbon is very nice. The hint of maple smooths it out nicely. The maple based vodka is also very nice. It has The slightest remaining hint of maple on the nose. I stopped in on a late afternoon midweek. I was the only one in the shop. The gentleman working was not very welcoming. He only seemed interested in engaging me with the minimum amount of interest to get back out the door! I did buy a couple if bottles as I really did enjoy their product. I'll definitely bring my wife back to the tasting room and hopefully we'll be more pleasantly received! read more

What a cool place!! At first, we thought it was a liquor store but when we walked in, we realized it was a distillery. Maple vodka??? Who thinks up this stuff?!?! Learned a little bit about their vodkas and sampled their best one - YUM! Bought two bottles - one to share and one to keep. Never imagined drinking vodka straight up but toss this bottle in your freezer and you'll love sipping it. It's so tasty!! We ended up buying their P 14 Bourbon. It was very smooth and delicious! Vermont Spirits is an amazing place located a few minutes off the Interstate on the way to Woodstock VT and just before Queeche Gorge. The location, in a picturesque strip mall that also houses an Alpaca farm store, an official Cabot Creamery store, and one three-story, gigantic antique shop, lends synergy to the place. We went there about 30 minutes before closing and the conversation was so vivid we kept the place open a few minutes after its posted time. The attendant was an expert on the process of distilling liquor and gave us a memorable training session. We were able to sample some of their selections, vodka, brandy (their blueberry is to die for) and bourbon. It is nice to see high-quality liquors being manufactured with the quality and discipline of New England. read more

A search on Yelp for a liquor store on our way to Montreal is what brought us to The Little Haunted Plaza That Could. Turns out VT Spirits is a distillery selling 3-5 bottles of maple vodka and other small batch booze. We bought one for a hostess gift - success! While there, we also found the Cabot Cheese store! HEAVEN! and the little haunted Quechee Diner. A few months later, we returned to camp at Quechee Gorge. Great spot! Spotted Vermont Spirits on our drive home and had to stop. While Vermont has many good brewery, you find distilleries are popping up everywhere. Its the cool new thing. The hubby and I had to try it. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by someone and they immediately treat you to a tasting. While you are merely only getting a small sip, everything tastes good. The vodkas tried were a lactose vodka and their maple vodka. Both are very smooth and easy to sip on. We also got to to try their bourbon maple syrup. Very sweet and although it carries the hint of bourbon, you can't get drunk eating your pancakes with this. We bought a bottle of their maple vodka because why not? My husband has grown an interest in distilling after visiting the Jack Daniels distillery and while he was asking questions, the staff did answer them but as soon as a new patron came in, they were lured to the tasting table and thus our Q&A session ended. I was a bit turned off by this because they very much seem to be pushing their products. As prices and bottle sizes were named off immediately after our tasting. But overall, a nice stop after checking our the Quechee Gorge. read more

Fascinating business now located in Quechee Gorge Village. They produce two super-premium vodka's from local agricultural products. Samples are available to adults ... and I had to ask for them ... not pushed on me by the greeter on that shift. I've never seen a distillery, and will probably never see another two-story fractionating tower that distills maple and apple products to such a high alcoholic proof. read more

I had actually been looking forward to visiting this distillery on a week's getaway to VT-NH-ME. We went to the distillery on a Wednesday afternoon (when it was nice and empty); I almost missed it at the end of the little shopping center that it's in, but definitely made sure to turn around and go inside. The tasting room was empty, though the staff person there was definitely energetic, happy to see us, and willing to give us tastes of whatever we wanted. It seems like it was out of season for anything but the normal vodkas, gin, and whiskey (I was hoping for the special batch 14 maple liqueur, but that didn't seem to be in the cards). Of course, we had the maple vodka (Vermont Gold) and the whey vodka (White, I think they called it). In both cases the staff person explained how they got the sugars out and distilled them while we were tasting. If you like the idea of your Vermont vodka smelling like the maple it's made from, you'll love this. The vodka itself was very smooth and it didn't have a strong maple flavor (which is fine- they aren't making infused vodkas), but the hint of the maple smell was there which made sipping it even more fun. The whey vodka is something else. Who would have thought vodka from cows, honestly? But it was probably one of the smoothest vodkas I've ever had- it'd make a great martini and was a hell of a lot better than far more expensive brands like Grey Goose. The whey vodka was pretty darn cheap too, which made it all the more worth it to buy. We also tried their gin, which is great for sipping. The juniper berries are muted a bit but you still had the good smoky taste of a good gin. What was really neat about it is that I (who LOVE gin) and the person I was with (who doesn't love gin at all) both agreed it was delicious and worth getting a bottle. They don't distill vodka out of normal grain or potatoes; they use Vermont products and are very proud of their local ties. But best of all, the service that we got and the products that we got to taste were great. If you're in the White River Junction area, go here- it's about 5 miles away- and it is incredibly worth it. Just wish they let you walk around the distillery. You could see everything, but it definitely would have been too tight and too small to let folks go through it. read more

I love their No. 14 maple bourbon; amazing, smooth, & perfect for sipping! And, they have a new rye coming out that has cranberry & spices; OMG, was THAT delicious! So sad they didn't have any bottled yet. But, I will drive up from RI again to get it when it's done Staff is super knowledgeable about their product. I'm giving 4 stars for the bourbon, but only 1 star for the snobby guy (owner) behind the counter. He must really not care if he sells his product, because when we walked in and (after waiting a few minutes to get his attention) asked for a tasting, he snottily informed me that we "could taste a bottle we were planning on buying, but this isn't a winery or a wine tasting". Put us off right away, we almost walked out. Yes, obviously I did not walk into a distillery expecting a wine tasting. Did you think because I am female I only drink wine? When he saw we were about to leave, he asked my husband what he had intended to buy. He said we liked bourbon, so we were offered a taste of the bourbon. The "14" bourbon was lovely, and we did buy a bottle, but I almost wish we hadn't upon reflecting on the guy's attitude. Heads up, dude: not only guys like bourbon, and most people who walk in are going to want to try your product before even considering a purchase. There are hundreds of craft distilleries out there now, so if you want to stand out, strive to improve your level of service. read more

Stopped by for a tasting on a recent outing from boston. Glad we stumbled on this place. The woman who greeted us was very friendly and we enjoyed learning about the various spirits offered. Even our dog was welcomed. I purchased a bottle of incredible gin made with Vermont grown juniper berries that I have been sampling at home every evening. It is wonderfully flavorful and aromatic. I'm not a big gin drinker.... until now! I only regret that I can't purchase online or from a local liquor store near home. read more

Not impressed at all. The store is well appointed and just down the road a piece from 91. In the strip mall there is an antiques shop with a Cabot cheese store. The guy behind the counter at VT Spirits was not interested in selling bottles nor offering tastings. He had been involved in a conversation with a couple as I walked in. I had stopped here on the way home from Canada, granted, I looked like I just finished a 15 mile hike over two days, as that was what I was doing in Canada. I asked about the white brandy - and about it being distilled with apples. He was smug and advised that brandy can be distilled from any fruit or mash. Picked up an overpriced bottle of their white Apple Brandy as a memento of the trip home, I just opened it. I expected what the label stated, "Vermont Spirits Apple Brandy Distilled from Apples. 40% Alc/Vol (80 Proof) 375ML - Our Apple Brandy is distilled using premium apples from Vermont's abundant orchards. The spirit has a bold apple nose with a hint of spice and a pleasantly warm finish" What I got was a nose of rubbing alcohol, a taste of oil paint stripper and finish of jet fuel. Best use is as lighter fluid for a campfire. The good news is when I drive through VT again I can get 15 cents back for the bottle as a refund. read more

This was a fun spot to stop for tastings during our trip to nearby Hanover. We spent the morning shopping in the village next door (full of fun shops with plenty of tempting items for visiting tourists), then made our way to the distillery after lunch. We tried a few whiskeys, vodka and the gin. I'm a bourbon girl, but the gin was my favorite and I took home a bottle. They have an interesting selection of bitters and liquors as well. The man who gave us the tasting was very friendly and informative. Vermont Spirits Distilling is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area and have a hankering for a bit of liquor. read more

Cool little distillery that seems to be coming along well. Very good pricing for micro-distilled vodka. They are lacking in other spirits in their selection, but their large barrelhouse suggests that they will soon have a larger selection. Great Products! The Vermont Gold (Maple Syrup Based Vodka) and Vermont White (Whey Based Vodka) are both superb. The staff was passionate about their product and interested in hearing about how people had come to hear of their products. Prices are reasonable for such a specialty spirit.
