Big selection of all types of liquor, pretty much anything you've ever heard of. Big selection of wines too, curated surprisingly well for being out here in the middle of nowheresville. Prices are reasonable and much lower than private-market stores like the Coops, Hannaford, etc. The store is efficient, down-to-earth, and safe, with good parking. Their website is excellent: useful, simple and efficient. I recommend checking it out before going to the store. It lists all of their items, and the complete current price list, including sales. It shows exactly what's in stock at each store location (IIRC it is updated each morning).

And the staff is great: Matt, the owner, knows his stuff and can offer an informed perspective on his stock. But the store doesn't just offer great beers. There's also a really good selection of wines. The wine selection isn't large, but it's well-curated, featuring many terrific European wines, including some fine Austrian producers and varietals that are hard to find in many stores. Many of the wines are from Artisanal Cellars in White River Junction, which imports very good wines, focusing on small, high-quality wines. There's also a good selection of Vermont and imported ciders and meads -- and usually a cider on tap for growler fills. [The cider selection itself is probably the best in the Upper Valley.] Woodstock Hops N' Barley also features beer-making supplies, from yeasts to carboys. And in an interesting twist, the store also rents DVDs. In an era where many video rental shops have closed, this will be a surprise to many people. But if you spend any time in Vermont, you'll realize why it's necessary. Internet service here is sporadic and slow for many of us, which makes streaming video impractical or impossible. So DVDs are necessary, if a seeming throwback.

Highly recommend! Their store has a great variety of autumn vegetables (pumpkins, gourds, squash, etc.) and mums. I wish I had gotten the name of the woman who was helping us at the tasting counter, because she was phenomenal. I learned so much about cider, and her customer service went above and beyond. No frills, but very family/dog friendly. Was a wonderful experience and created a lasting memory on our anniversary weekend.

Best of all -- if you haven't had real cider (fermented apple juice, not the sweet juice that's often, and erroneously, called "cider"), you owe it to yourself to taste Farnum Hill ciders. They range from dry to semi-sweet, with a few single-variety ciders (which are fairly rare: most cider is a blend of juice from different apples). And they're made from real cider apples -- Farnum Hill may have the best collection of cider apple trees in the Northeast. Not that my local prejudice is showing or anything. In case you're wondering, Farnum Hill ciders are very highly regarded, some of the finest cider produced in America. You can find them in fancy stores in Manhattan, on restaurant menus, and at cider bars (like Wassail in NYC). But it's way cooler to taste them -- and buy them -- right on the farm. I'm a local, so I can zip over on Thursday nights when growler fills are less expensive. A real treasure!

It was divine intervention that made me pull off that specific exit. It seemed dead amongst the nearby businesses in that little enclave, but a hint of human activity pulled me towards Vermont Spirits. After my coy request and use of the restroom (what a relief!), I stood at the bar and asked about their line of products. Barkeep Meg was nice enough to allow me to sample some of their offerings, including the super secret juice! Also really appreciated being able to talk with the chief, Randy, and exchange eclipse experiences. Really friendly folks, and it truly kept my sanity in check. There were NO signs saying no parking, or parking only for plaza businesses, or only 1 hr parking ... no signs at all! Had to pay $275 in CASH only to Montshire Towing to get it back. I wonder how much of that money ended back in the store's coffers ... feels like a scam!
