Since June 2018 I've had an issue with my mouth, and it's gotten worse. After seeing my reg…read more dentist initially, & then more recently my PCP, long story short, it was recommended that I get checked by an oral surgeon & possibly get it biopsied! That word alone is enough to make anyone scared! My insurance CSR named Dr. A. Cuomo for numerous reasons, including an alleged 4-5 star rating! Well, I will preclude the following by admitting I can be sensitive & extra cautious, so I wanted to give the Dr. & staff the benefit of the doubt. I'm a 53 yr old female, & at this life stage anything is possible. Therefore, I thought they'd try hard(er) to put me at ease. But, I was first met by a polite receptionist, who handed me about 5-6 pages of paperwork, including a request for some very personal ID that no other dr.'s office ever asked for (& I didn't give it either; it wasn't necessary to the treatment!). I couldn't concentrate because the tv in the waiting room was too loud. As I was the only patient there, I asked that it be lowered, & the recept. said they didn't usually do that! So, #1 sign of disrespect. Later, in the exam room, a (presumed) dr. entered, but didn't smile once, not once! He did not even introduce himself, even though I was a new client! (Dis #2 &3). I had to ask him to confirm his name! Then, as I tried to convey my issues, instead of looking me in the eye & listening,he just looked down to write his notes. (#4) I had to ask him to look at me. Moving along, while I nervously tried to describe the irritations, Dr. A. Cuomo just seemed annoyed, as if I were taking up his precious time w/ something not "worthy" of his skill set. He even had the audacity to make a comment about a hygiene habit (#5-as if !!). I mentioned after, an unusual burning sensation while using a nonalcohol-based mouthwash, & he responded, dismissively, something like " I don't know anything about those" (REALLY-an oral surgeon who doesn't know about leading mouthwash brands??!!- #6). Again, the whole time he never once smiled! Every symptom I described, he dismissed! Even though my situation's worsened steadily since June. The end result was he referred me to another dr., an oral pathologist, or even a ENT specialist. This dr. was probably medically competent & capable, but as a professional, not to mention a human being, he was cold, unfriendly, & curt! There's more to patient care than textbook application. People need to matter, & the Dr. & staff need to work on their "people skills" and communication! It's simply unacceptable behavior! I would, therefore, NOT recommend Dr. Anthony Cuomo to anyone. What a shame! What a sorry, unpleasant, disappointing experience. Sincerely, Ms. Kaye Carmel, NY

That said, it was clearly all about money, not service. I am not qualified to judge the quality of the surgery he performed. We will find that out in the future from our dentist. What was unsatisfactory was his beside manner and surgical approach. While I was in the office, he was perfunctory, as in rude to use the word my daughter used. Not comforting or pleasant. When my daughter came out of the treatment room quickly (about 10 minutes), I asked her about her experience. Apparently, Dr. Vakkas used Novocain but did not wait for it to take effect so she would be numb. She experienced lots of pain. We had chosen to use oral sedation, not IV. I have had two similar surgeries, I had no sedation, just Novocain and experienced no pain. He did not seem to care about her discomfort. When he completed the surgery, he just walked out without saying anything to her. Not the way to treat any patient, never mind a teenager. Needless to say, we will not be returning nor recommending him.
