You've got the center skating rink in the winter and endless people watching In the summer. Great place to also grab a coffee and head out for a walk around the forks. I really enjoy this cafe. The menu is decently priced compared to big chains. They use and support local bakeries with their food selection. Ive been coming to espresso junction for my coffee needs for over 3 years now and will remain a customer for years to come. Hint: try their London fog (never had a better one anywhere else) or their after 8 hot chocolate. So tasty!

You can also ask about frequent buyer card (if they still have it) for even more savings. They roast their coffee in house, and large number of patrons guarantees that it is always fresh. I also recently discovered that you can pre-order your beans in advance. The advantage, ones you know what type of beans you like, is that you'll have your favourite beans ready for you even if they don't have it in roasted stock. Let's say you like their "cowboy" blend and want to buy it, sometimes you'll show up and they're fresh out. Now if you pre-order your blend, they'll roast a small batch just for you. Note: I'm reviewing this place for their coffee beans *only*. I prefer my home made cup of coffee to pretty much any cafe I've tried.

Recently, Winnipeg is definitely going through it's slew of independent coffee houses. So lucky for…read moreall of us who enjoy coffee and want an alternative to Starbucks and a desire to support local independent businesses. Parlour Coffee on Main Street was pretty much the first onto the scene last year with it's gourmet coffee and ultra minimalistic interior design. MAKE / Coffee + Stuff opened in Dec '12, is a very modern, sleek and minimalistic coffeehouse that looks more like a modern art space than coffee hangout. But that's probably because the owner is an environmental design instructor at U of M's faculty of architecture. The place is a bit hidden unless you are looking for it as it's in the same strip as Kristina's on Corydon. This place is situated within a few steps of Starbucks and Second Cup on Corydon. The space is completely white, with design books lined along the left side, several wood crate like coffee tables, a few minimalistic chairs, hanging industrial lights in a space that's both raw yet designed. The espresso counter in the back of the space has a small and focused menu: espresso, latte, cappucino, mocha, americano, slow drip and san pellegrino. Espressos are $2.50, lattes are $4 and mochas are $4.50 and are served in one size. I would hazard to guess that the mocha I had was maybe 250 ml or a short in Starbucks world. I like smaller sized coffees but for those who love grandes and such, it might seem like you're not getting as much drink. It wasn't my favourite mocha but the did use freshly grated callebaut chocolate. The espresso grind felt a bit dark and was not as smooth as I prefer. But coffee is such a subjective drink so I'd go back and try a slow drip to give this place another try. Nonethless, the best part of this space is the concept behind the coffee house - which is to support the local design community. It's meant to be a hub for not only the local design culture but for others to engage with the art by being a retail and exhibition venue. Apparently, designers work the espresso bar at MAKE.

This was my first time hearing about them being available in the city, so of course I had to go try it. The last time I had Portuguese egg tarts was when I was in Macau, and they were so amazing, so my expectations have already been set quite high. We got a package of 6. The shell of the egg tart was flaky, and there was a nice caramelization at the top. They were very good, but they weren't as good as the ones I've had in the past. Give them a try if you've never had a Portuguese egg tart before.

What's not to love about this place? It's a super friendly Portuguese grocery, bakery and eatery!!…read moreOh yeah, and they sell the juiciest, most amazing whole roasted chicken with piri piri sauce and potatoes for $15!!! I was very sad when I heard Chave D'Ouro closed as that was the first place I ever tasted Portuguese style roast chicken and potatoes and fell in love. Well, now this place has taken over that business by offering that as a take out - just order ahead, preferable 24 hours ahead but they said they can do it with 3 hours notice but 24 hours is best since it lets the chicken properly marinate. Their lunches are a hidden gem as you can get $5 lunches that are super yum. Seriously, where can you even get lunch for that price anymore??? Bifana, pork sandwich with caramelized onions, banana peppers and hot sauce goes for $3 or if you add on the soup of the day comes to $5. The home made soup was great, not salty at all, you can taste all the fresh veggies in there. So good. The bifana can be ordered with beef instead, called "prego" though pork is traditional. Wonderful sandwich with great flavours so get all the fixings. The bakery is another huge winner as it's still as good as I remembered from my last view a couple of years ago when they first opened. Their cinnamon buns are more doughy but I like that and has just enough cinnamon and brown sugar in there without it being too bloody sweet which I hate. Their baked items change daily but Saturday has the most flavours to choose from. You gotta try the chorizo in a bun for $3.50 - it's essentially a calzone, bread filled with sliced strips of home made chorizo (made in house, which you can buy as well) plus mozzarella. The wonderful guy working there who was super passionate about the food suggested getting this heated up and filled with caramelized onions if you eat it in store. Do the same if you take it home or add a fried sunny side up egg and make it a meal. I heated the chorizo bun in a toaster oven, cup the top open and placed a sunny side up egg and had the most delicious lunch. Great place to try so many yummy savoury and sweet items!!!! It's mostly take out though there are a handful of tables for you to sit and enjoy the food as well. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday and Saturday, to 6 p.m. Friday.

The first day I came here I was warmly greeted by the owner, a beautiful, hard working mother whose son manned the cash register and prepared drinks and other foods. They were both very nice! I decided to try the Vietnamese Fish Cake sub because I was very hungry. The fish was moist and not too fishy! Very tasty! I also loved my tangy Orange Guava Bubble tea. They have an assortment of bubble tea flavors here! The second time I stopped by I had the Thai tea Bubble tea and it's my favorite! It's very sweet. I munched on some Kimchi seaweed flakes fries. The seaweed flakes are salty and the sauce on it gave the fries a nice little zesty kick. On my second visit the owner gave me a free Mochi Waffle and it's the best thing I've tasted in a long time. The middle is almost gooey and everything was very sweet! I also decided to buy a Chocolate Matcha Mochi muffin and it also was fun to eat but also very filling. The restaurant is vibrantly decorated and elegant. This place is a type of foodie Heaven!

A brand new desserts and cafe shop open in the former Grey Owl Coffee space on Main St…read more This review is only for the drinks and desserts we had and we were pleasantly surprised because we were a little thrown off by the tacky 'unicorn theme' once we got inside. It seems to be confusing with the Asian fusion dishes (which look great on the menu and we'll be back to try). What we would give two stars is the service. We walked in and looked around at the shop and menu since it's brand new. Of the two staff behind the counter, no one even greeted or acknowledged us until we went up to the counter to order. They could have used this opportunity to ask what we were in the mood for or a recommendation. If this happens when we come back, there will be no third chances. One thing that needs to be dumped is the incredibly tacky 'buzzer' you're given to let you know your order is ready. Picture something you get at the chain restaurants when you're waiting for a seat. In such a tiny cafe, this is completely unnecessary. A good idea would be to bring orders to patrons since this would seem a better fit than a cheesy mall food court set up.
