The WORST possible place I have ever encountered plus they are a ripoff as they double charged me for my room and added additional charges making our pile of crap, 2 towel, cockroach and bed bug infested, dirty, smelly no sleep due to loud music until 2am, broken stairs filthy carpet, rude owner/manager who does not understand or speak English, filthy bathroom. torn up pool table and used sheets room cost us $240.00!! I'm giving 1 star only for the location and the cute house. Otherwise it's just a trashy place. The rooms were for 6 people but we were at least 12 in the room. The beds seemed to be bed they found in the street. Some of the beds were only mattresses on the floor. I'm used to really nice, cheap and clean hostel in Europe. This place is soooo far from the quality of hostel you can find in France, Spain or Uk for exemple. If you have $40 to loose go camping ! read more

It's the first hostel I've ever stayed in so take the review w a grain of salt if you are an experienced hostel stayer. Miko (sp?) the guy who check us in was very friendly and informative on how to get places. It is about a 20 min walk to the beach but on vacation I don't get to make it to the gym so it was nice to still have to get more steps in. There were a lot of people staying in the hostel. We had access to the fridge and there was breakfast included. 9 - 10 am is breakfast time and I thought they should have started it sooner ... maybe 7 am? The house has a home-y vibe and everyone we met was nice but like others said, you don't ever really feel clean and there are only two bathrooms for like 35 people. I could tell on my bed the springs were popping out. There were bikes to rent for $15 a day at the house which is super cheap compared to the beach rental bikes. Also a vending machine for drinks and food. read more

Nice people, great location and the reception desk is always there to help and easy to reach! Stayed there for 2 nights with my best friend from Germany - we enjoyed staying there and met awesome people. For those of you looking for luxury: mind hostels in general! If you'd love to meet great people from all over the world and don't mind sharing bedrooms - this is a great place for your trip. Bad customer service. I called because i work in the city and live very far away so i called for a room. He(Marco) over the phone and asked me to tell him about myself. I did and he said come over. I get there he asked me to leave my bag at the door. Odd, but followed him to the kiychen and he tells me this hostel is for internationals, not americans. Couldnt he tell me that over the phone? I work during the week and drive about 100 miles for off days then start my week again on tuesday. when i looked up hostels it didnt say this hostel was for just internationals. Fishy business here and now i have to find another one after being rejected here. Did i mention i just finished work standing for 7 hours and massaging for 5.5 hours? well maybe they just dont like americans. BAD BUSINESS! read more

I've stayed at many hostels in the US, so I am confident ensuring you that this is the worst of them all. And for a number of reasons. However, first, and most importantly: the guy who checked us in at 11:00pm was wearing a red Donald Trump "Make America Great Again" trucker hat. And it wasn't a joke. I asked him. My girlfriend, who is of color, was scared. I fought inside my head all night debating if I should stay or leave. I feel terrible, and guilty, for not leaving immediately. I think I was just confused. Either way. Only support this hostel by staying there if you are also okay with supporting Trump. Second, their location is not real! They have "two" locations. One near the beach, and one NOT NEAR the beach, or a "15 minute walk away"--this is not true, even for a fast walker and when you do get to the beach (actually 25 minutes) you have to cut north to get to the Venice beach boardwalk which is an additional 10-15 minute walk. Thirdly, this place is filthy. The bathrooms are not nice and no money has been put into the place. I imagine the beds were taken from alleyways to save money. When we arrived all the windows, including those in the bedroom, were open without screens. I've honestly stayed in hostels in third-world countries that are levels better than this place. Don't stay here. Don't waste your money. Spend a few bucks more for somewhere else or sleep in your car. read more

I stayed at the Venice Beach Hostel for a few weeks and had a great experience. The employees were social and kind. The type of travelers that the hostel attract are down to earth and fun. While this is not a party hostel, often at night people meet in the living room and kitchen, drink, play card games, and then go out. The old wooden decor and the comfy sofas give the place a chill vibe. There are two locations: Yale Avenue and Washington Boulevard. I recommend trying to get a bed at the Washington location. It is the main hostel and is more social and accommodating. When I did stay at the Yale location, I would often go hang out at the main hostel, especially at night. Although, the Yale location does have a living room where people gather. They also rent bikes out, 15 bucks a day, cheaper than anything you'll find around. read more

I made the reservation via Hostelworld and the confirmation email, as well as the page for it, said it is for international travelers but will also make exceptions for in-country travelers. I figured it would not be an issue because I just got here from Vermont, a 3000 mile drive, and my VT driver's license would prove I'm not a local. But when I arrived, exhausted and just looking to shower and sleep before an early morning to get up and continue driving up the coast, the person working said under no circumstances would they allow me to stay, despite the fact that they have plenty of beds available and the proof that I am indeed from thousands of miles away. If you are a US citizen, even if you are traveling, you will not be allowed to stay here. This place is strictly for people who are not US citizens. Don't even try. He'll send you to the alternative hostels that charge over $80 a night to sleep in a room with 7-11 strangers. read more

Uncertain what most American hostels are like in terms of cleanliness and setup, but this place needs a serious tune up. It was difficult to get in touch with anyone at the hostel to change my reservation, I called five times and left a voicemail, which I never heard back from anyone. I was also charged an extra fee for being late for checkout, after paying an additional fee and despite being told I would be able to stay longer due to an interview I had scheduled around the time of checkout. Had I wanted to spend this much money on a hostel I would have stayed at a hotel where it is at least clean, staff are attentive, and doesn't smell like mildew and old cleaning supplies. read more

Stayed here in August 2017 and really enjoyed the experience. Location was great, they have two spots. One is a larger house that I didn't stay in and 2nd is what looks like an upstairs apartment converted into a hostel, that was the one I stayed in. Staff was friendly - Anna was very helpful during check-in and gave us info about everything like bars, restaurants, etc. nearby and gave us a tour of both locations. Less than a mile from the ocean and a straight shot down Washington Blvd to get to the beach and Venice boardwalk area. Took maybe 5 minutes on a bike. Didn't try the breakfast but they had a nice looking selection that I saw when I was checking out. read more

Super casual place, and par for the course compared to other hostels. Pro: great place to stay if you are traveling alone and want to meet other travelers to hang out with and explore the city together. Home style feeling, literally since it is a home that has been converted into a hostel. Also, close to the beach and marina. Con: bed rooms are over crowded with 10-20 people staying in each room. There are only 2 bathrooms for the entire place. NOT ENOUGH! Also, the place is very dated and old. I never felt clean staying there. But thats what you get for a hostel. read more

THE ADDRESS IS NOT TRUE: The address they put on the website does not match the actual address. We stayed for a long time looking for the hostel with GPS and we were only able to find after we called to the hostel and got the real address. ps: have another post here with the right address saying that it moved (http://www.yelp.com/biz/venice-beach-hostel-venice-2). It's a lie, continues in the same place. THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT IS A HOSTEL: the house has no sign with the name of the hostel or even any indication that there runs a hostel. The frontage is of a normal house. The owner told us that is a residential area so it could´t have anything to indicate that there works a hostel. The wrong location on the site, lack of indication of a hostel and the appearance of the place made us wonder if this place was in fact a regular/legal hostel. 15 MIN WALK TO THE BEACH, NOT TRUE: They said it was 15min walk to the beach, when actually we took at least 30min. WEIRD PRIVATE ROOM: I asked for a private room with private bathroom and our room had no separation between the bedroom and bathroom. And in the bathroom had no shower (only a bath tub) . Nobody told us that I had to use the toilet in front of my boyfriend or bathing in a tub where several unknown persons usually bathe. BAD HYGIENE: my friend woke up scratching. NOTHING FRIENDLY BREAKFAST: breakfast only lasts 1 hour (9 - 10am), so, if you want to leave early to enjoy the day in town, give up breakfast. And also, if it's 10am and you are still having breakfast, the owner starts removing everything from the table rudely without say a word. RUDE SERVICE: Are two responsible for the hostel, a man and a woman. The man is very friendly. The woman received us very well when we just arrived, but shortly after (coincidentally after we make the payment), she started treating us rudely and always seemed grumpy. VERY EXPENSIVE AS TO QUALITY: After this experience we chose to search for hotels (not hostels) in the other cities we visited. We found excellent hotels, that were cheaper and definitely much better than this hostel. I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND this Venice Beach Hostel read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here! Very friendly group of people. The owner is extremely friendly and the building is really cool and funky - very "Venice". My experience was entirely unlike some of the negative reviews here. I did run into the address issue though. The Washington st address is for their second building. The main hostel is on Yale st...a couple blocks east on Washington. No hygiene issues whatsoever in my experience. The beds are quite springy, but wound up being quite comfortable nonetheless. Also the location is excellent IMO. Closer to the beach can be sketchy/noisy and can make parking a complete nightmare. This location has easy access to the beach, but also has abbot Kinney right around the corner and a large 24 hour grocery store two blocks away. As it was mentioned, the place prefers non-American guests. So I'd recommend calling first if you're not international. It's certainly not discriminatory though, if they have plenty of room they let Americans stay (such as they did for me). Also the vibes of the guests were great. Never felt unsafe or like I had to worry about my belongings. Another note - they have a garage for bikes. So they're safe and protected from rain. read more

This hostel is good you get exactly what you pay for. Good location you can catch a bus from the airport for $1 and only takes about 15 mins, close to major intersection with large supermarkets and food outlets which is where the bus drops you off. You can feel safe walking from the bus stop to the hostel (I walked by myself at 1230am). Is also a 20 minute walk to Venice beach which is handy. The hostel is cleaned daily and while it is definitely not spotless or fancy for the price it is good enough. You get a free breakfast of toast or cereals which is handy when on a budget. I'd recommend it for people needing a cheap, convenient stay. The staff were very accommodating and very helpful. One thing to note is the actual address for checking in is: 2915 Yale ave !! read more

This hostel really wasn't bad, this was my first hostel experience. We ended up getting a private room on Washington Blvd. They have separate houses for the dorm style rooms and the individual rooms. I think we paid close to $150 for 2 nights for 2 people. Not bad for being right on down the street from Venice Beach. The only downsides was sharing the one bathroom with a lot of people and the amount of dust in the house and in the windows. Otherwise it was just what we needed. People in the individual rooms stayed to themselves so if you want to meet people then you'd be better off staying in the house with the shared rooms. Towels were provided, kitchen, living area. I never felt unsafe. Employees at the hostel were great. The hostel also rents bikes and breakfast is provided! read more

My boyfriend and I looked up hostels near the Venice Beach area, and stumbled on this one. Little did we know this was an "internationals only, must have an accent and love Trump" facility. We arrived at 9 am when they opened, and seemed annoyed we'd gotten there so early. The employees kept saying things like "I can tell you've never stayed at a hostel before" and "you don't know where anything is" type of attitude. The rooms feel like you're in a prison and your only friend is the Polish guy who wears "Make America Great Again" hats and has been stabbed for doing so. There are only two bathrooms, literally two toilets. On top of that, it was single-ply toilet paper, IF THAT. Paid $80 for one night between us both, and the breakfast was toast and a banana. Also, the beach is about 30 minutes away despite what they may advertise. Would not recommend, would rather stay on the beach with the guy who sells wood art from Home Depot all night. read more
