Each small tapas plate of food is wonderfully crafted and has unique favors, and the small portions allow you to try and share many different dishes.

We tried the "yellow submarine" which was a barrel-aged cachaça drink with lime, vanilla and maracujá (passion fruit) which was very good but it was piled high with ice and got very watery quick. The "Carla" was a strawberry lime spritzer which was also tasty with freshly muddled strawberries. I tried the Brie gratin with a generous helping of focaccia slices. The bread was excellent, spongy and topped with large sea salt crystals. The melted Brie came presented on an oblong plate surrounded in a sea of black mushroom sauce. It was a great combination full of flavor and quite filling. The hamburger was quite disappointing. It was very undercooked and chewy. The goat cheese was a unique flavor added with red bell pepper and had the potential for being good if it had been cooked right. It came with a delicious au jous sauce perfect for dipping the side of potato wedges in. For a burger, I would much prefer OMG or TT, which are both just around the corner. I would expect better quality for a R$49 burger! Maybe the seafood dishes are better but I wasn't that impressed with the chattery boy's club waiter, bartender and chef staff inside who didn't seem to act very professional even when customers were within hearing distance. With so many restaurants in this area, Oscar has a lot of stiff competition.

Since Brazil doesn't really have the same 'coffee shop' culture as the US, I had trouble working from home the first year that I lived here. FINALLY, I found Grão & Cia where they have free wifi, great coffee, nice people and a quiet upstairs to work where you are undistracted. Sometimes I literally work here for 6-8 hours so luckily they have snacks like nuts, cheeses and gluten free breads and granola bars. It is full of artisan snacks and craft beers and great wines. I bought this farofa that is so good! It comes in a fancy glass jar and has rosemary, Brazil nuts, basil and some other spices. I coated a piece of dourado (I think that is Mahi Mahi) with it and baked it and it turned out so yummy! The manager is really helpful. He is always getting new snacks in and has picked up on the types of things I like so every time I go in, he suggests new products. He also speaks English. Though, now I am fluent enough and we speak in Portuguese. The ONLY downfall of this place is that they literally play the same CD of 12 tracks over and over and over and over. In the year that I have gone there, it has NEVER changed. Thus, I bring headphones and play my own music.

That is the time that I like most. The ambience is great with few outside tables and people gathering to talk, eat, drink and have fun. A very positive atmosphere. The sandwich itself costs 20 reais and it is delicious (ask for the "special" sauce). You can buy special beers or wine by the glass from the store. But it is not cheap after all: one imported beer and one sandwich (or a glass of wine) will end up around $50.

Jardim…read moreBotânico neighborhood seems to have some very hip restaurants and bars that I would like to explore aside from the few Michelin rated ones we've tried. I love the atmosphere of this place, high on the second floor, after ascending a bright red welcoming staircase, it opens to a rooftop terrace with clear roofing in case it rains. The view is awesome and on clear day you can apparently see Cristo. The ceiling or open air above is strung with soft outdoor bulbs and the whole place seems like another world. We saw plenty of romantic couples and also large groups of friends, so it's accommodating to both types. The drinks were fantastic, made with good creativity. I tried a whiskey based drink with strawberry and lime and it was easy to drink but packed a lot of punch. The Pisco sour was also made with a delicate egg white foamed on the top, though not as good as the ones in Peru or Chile. The honey jack had just a touch of truffle oil which made it sweet and savory. The burger with Gorgonzola was quite good as well, and came with a side of crispy potato wedges. The teriyaki seared salmon was beautifully presented on a slate and had dollops of a creamy wasabi that paired fantastically with the sweet teriyaki. Lastly I tried the cheesecake which I was surprised to find deconstructed. It came on a plate as a melted mound of cheese cake mush with a strip of strawberry jelly and topped with a sprinkle of graham cracker crust. The flavor was quite good but I would have preferred a more solid cheesecake with a lot more crust. Overall, the food was fairly good, the atmosphere was dynamic and the sky was perfect. Good for a night out with friends or on a date. Just plan it for a non-rainy day!

The ambiance is awesome. It kind of feels like you are outside since there is just a transparent tent over the top. I think during the summer, they take the tent down so you actually are inside/outside. You can see the Christ through the little cutouts in the wall. They've got cute hanging lights and it is very colorful and bright. The service was also really great. They were very patient with my group of gringos who asked for many substitutions and other funny things that Americans do, haha. I ordered the salmon with wasabi mayo and pineapple teriyaki with ginger chips. The price was very fair at about R$26. I wasn't very hungry so that was enough. If you are hungry, you will need more food. I also got a whiskey sour, which was good! The only difficult part was that each person had to remember what they ordered and they tallied it up in the end. It would have been easier if each person could have gotten a number.
