Katie (previous reviewer) and I went together for a hair/makeup trial run with Darlene in…read morepreparation for her wedding. We showed up a few minutes early but Darlene was a few minutes late - not something I'd hold against someone if everything else went well, but it wasn't a point in her favor either. My hairstyle was close to, but not quite the picture I had brought Darlene but I was still happy with it. I loved the airbrush makeup, but I felt very mediocre about the eyeshadow application. I used to be a cosmetics rep so I really felt like I could have done just as good or better with the eyeshadow. I was still debating just doing the airbrush foundation and doing my own eyes but for $135 for hair/makeup, it seemed like I shouldn't have to do anything myself. I was still deciding when the problems started... We prepaid that day for the wedding day's services but it turned out that she wanted us to start hair/makeup at 8:30am (a total of 5 ladies, some doing just hair, some just makeup), her goal was to finish at 2pm because of another appointment even though she knew the wedding wasn't until 6 pm (pictures starting @ 4pm). Every professional I've spoken to about it was shocked to hear this - it seems that Darlene overcommitted herself by trying to book 2 major parties in one day and that bumping our time slot up by several hours wasn't the right thing to do. She was unable to come up with a solution to the problem, and by 6pm that evening she still had no solution. Luckily we were able to find another place at the last minute that could accomodate us, but at this point Darlene was planning to charge both of us 50% cancellation fees (half of my $135 and for Katie, half of the estimated services for the rest of the party and herself). She agreed to refund me because I never had any contract or agreement with her regarding her cancellation fee, but in order to put it back on my credit card, she wanted me to absorb a $25 fee she claimed was going to be charged by the credit card company. I've never heard of a card company doing this, but we agreed on her refunding me by check anyways. As of now she & the bride never came to a satisfactory solution. As far as i know, nothing was signed and I'm not sure, but I don't believe e-mail conversations are legally binding, especially since it wasn't put into contractual form. Darlene originally said she'd call us back, and by 3pm the day before the wedding, she had not. Knowing that a bridezilla attitude can be non-productive, my friend asked me to take over the correspondence with Darlene. We played phone tag & she finally called to tell us she was unable to get hold of the other group to push back their appointment. When I spoke to her again later that evening, she asked me for "1 more hour" to get things straightened out, and promised not to charge the 50% fee if she couldn't work it out, however because she made this offer well after 5pm, to allow her another hour without making plans with another company would have left us out of options if she didn't have a guaranteed solution. She said she needed to call her boss to find out if she had the 'ok' to refund us and skip the cancelation fee. When we spoke later, she admitted that she didn't have a boss, that she is an independent contractor and was actually consulting the salon owner & another co-worker who had more experience. So she initially lied to me by telling me she needed to ask her boss... not cool. I understand the point of the cancelation fee so that a business or a professional's time is not wasted, but to charge these fees when it is the fault of the business/merchant is unreasonable, unprofessional, and unethical. Furthermore, I believe part of her push for the early appointment time was even more due to poor planning on her part as she was unable to find another stylist to help her with our appointments as she had planned. She needed the extra time in order to get everyone done without assistance and was not upfront about this to begin with.

I had my hair done here on my wedding day and it was almost amusing, what a horrible time I had…read morehere. It made for a good story and the fact that it was the single bad thing that happened on my wedding day, I should at least be grateful. I'll just say the person's name begins with an "M" - She did my hair and I think she was in a bad mood because not only did she yell at her coworker (and then her other coworker yelled at her for yelling at her coworker in front me - all of this, in front of me), she absolutely yanked my hair the entire time. And she bitched the entire time about how fine (read: THIN) my hair was.The sad thing is that I had some major health stuff this year and I was grateful for the fact that I was even healthy enough to get married (let alone have any hair on my head). Her comments were terribly insensitive. She kept griping about how nothing she did was going to hold because my hair was so hard to work with. Then she COVERED my head in baby's breath. It was awful. She even made a comment about how the baby's breath would hide the big parts in my hair (you know, because my hair is so FINE). I wanted out of the salon as fast as possible - and when I got home, my girlfriend helped me take 99% of it out. My head hurt so bad the entire time I was there. I didn't say a word because at this point she had already yelled at the coworker, insulted my hair and I knew there would be a scene. It was my wedding day and I really didn't want to deal with a crazy person. Here's the topper - At the very end of the appointment, she noticed me wincing in pain. When she asked if she was hurting me, I gave a sheepish yes. Then she proceeded to LECTURE me on how unless I tell her, she wouldn't know and how it was my fault for not letting her know. Her next client came in when we were finishing - a younger gal with a beautiful head of hair. And she was so obviously excited to get through me so she could work on her. Not one person at the salon told me I looked beautiful. And every bride should hear that on her wedding day - especially when you're paying them $100. And you know what? I DID look beautiful. As the case was with me, many people who have weddings in Tahoe don't actually live there - so planning and finding the right people can be difficult. So I figured posting this might save someone a not-so-great experience. But I married a wonderful man and had a beautiful wedding day, so screw them.
