I decided on their jiu-jitsu (I always spell that wrong!) program because I looked up what would burn the most calories in the shortest amount of time, and it was very close to the top. Little did I know, the workout would fly by, unlike running where I would check my watch every 5 mins to see if I was done! My first class was with coach Fraser, and I learned very quickly that he was very good. Not only a great technician, but also a great instructor. After a few months, I dropped the 30lbs (they literally melted off) and developed a solid background in self defense (something you wont get by bicycling!). A great place to get in shape, learn self defense, meet awesome people, and have fun!

Overall the class was fine, but not the best fit for my kid so we ended up not registering.

I was a member here for a month while visiting family for the holidays and it was just an okay…read moreexperience. The positives: - the owner is very nice and accommodating for my unusual request of just a single month membership to keep up my fitness and boxing practice while visiting for a month. - some of the trainers were amazing (others not at all (more on that later). - I do enjoy the no set class times so you can just go whenever you're done with work or need to get to the gym "now" because your motivation may not last. - They seemed to do quite a bit of member events and socials outside of the gym (unsure if that's because it was the holiday season or if this typical year round). - When I had a trainer I liked, it was a pretty good workout and can see why some people enjoy 9Round. The negatives: - the trainer makes ALL the difference. I honestly wish I had explored more of who the other trainers would be during the week vs during the weekends. I started adjusting my work schedule to avoid trainers I didn't like... - If you don't like super loud music in a tiny space, this isn't for you. I'd leave with a headache most days because it was just too much. - This isn't a gym for people who need physical accommodations. Some trainers were better than others, but they definitely didn't enjoy the fact I didn't feel comfortable kicking given surgical metal in my ankle and so it hurt like a MoFo to do any of those moves. You also ALWAYS start in Round One with jump rope... that was brutal. - The class times are really bizarre. They're open in the morning for a bit, close for an hour, and then open again for 90 minutes and then are closed all the way until after work hours. It's weird they don't have a lunch time option given how quick and efficient the workout is. I wish I would have realized that before signing up. - They make you switch your stance all the time (fighter stance to non-dominate stance) and even within the same combo. While I get what they're trying to do (even out the effort on both sides), this lead to me pulling muscles because my form was so off when trying to be SouthPaw vs just staying in my fighter stance. Not to mention it's super confusing to think about it when you're already taxing your system with a hard workout. All in all, I see what people enjoy 9Round and are very loyal to it, but it just wasn't for me. I want more of a mix of weight lifting and cardio and this gym just doesn't offer that type of workout.

The owner, Chris, was super friendly over the phone before I set foot in the building and set up my free trial. Upon meeting the various members of the team over the course of a few sessions, I've seen and felt firsthand an entirely new jiu jitsu experience. The team was not only welcoming, but several members with colored belts from blue to black went above and beyond to help me with great attention to detail and I began to see what I needed to see in myself during drills, positional training, and sparring. After every training session, I've seen the mat thoroughly cleaned. Overall, this school is clean, welcoming, and I feel safe training and learning jiu jitsu here as a member.

Since returning from uni, I decided to look for some studios in my local area (SY Valley) and found Awaken! When I was checking out their Instagram, I really dug the vibes and message shared by the owner. I happened to notice that an Intro to Kickboxing class was being hosted in the coming week and decided to attend! Located next to an old theater, there's lots of parking for the studio. I had seen that the studio was a no shoes policy so I entered, then took off my shoes before walking onto the mat. I got to meet the owner Bridget and she gave a spiel about Awaken and its mission! During the class we were taught some basic kicks and punches that would come up during a regular class at Awaken. She also took time to explain the various types of classes that were offered at the studio. It was a very cool and fun environment that definitely encouraged me to come back. Ever since this class, I purchased a class pack and have been coming back every week! I would become a member but am currently in the midst of transitioning out of university and don't quite have the funds to support a membership at the moment. Nonetheless, I've enjoyed all of my classes I've taken and miss it when I don't go back for a bit. Anyone thinking about checking Awaken out -- go for it! You won't regret it.
