Ok, I almost don't want to write a public review, for fear that the place will be swamped with customers and I won't be able to get my little baby in for her tuneups. Tom is a superb mechanic and a great guy. The first time I took my bike to the shop (converted living room of a house a couple of blocks away from the current 'real' shop) I thought I'd gone to the wrong address. When I stepped inside the door to see a line of HIGH-end bikes (lined up for service) hanging on the wall, I knew Tom was the real deal. When I picked up my bike, I shamefully mentioned that I forgot to ask him to keep the brake levers "loose". Tom's response: "Oh, I did that." "How did you know?" I asked. "Well, I do it by the size of the bike. Small bike usually means small hands, means looser brake levers." SOLD! I don't have that testosterone-induced need for the latest-greatest-lightest-carbonest bike parts and accessories, so I haven't bought any "stuff" from Velotech, but no one but Tom touches my bikes any more. :) I should add that my first Velotech bike tune-up was bought at a charity auction. (Tom had donated it.) I like to support people like that.

Our intent is to stay in the Mountain ViewCA-USA community, and all of us cycling around this bike-friendly area, specifically to the Google museum and cafe. Unfortunately, there are few places that actually rent bikes, and the Bay Area ceased a bike-share program some time ago because it was too expensive and was abused. Too bad; we had rented the bikes several years ago during a visit, and thought it would be useful again. Oh, well, this issue was finally resolved through my most favorite #1 son volunteered his upright tandem to be used. Anyway, if I lived closer to Mike's Bikes, I'd definitely patronize that obviously wonderful shop!

I took my bike in for service and proceeded to wait for 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge our presence (there were 2 other people in line also being ignored). The 2 people behind the counter were working on bikes, but did not bother to look up at the line of customers. Eventually someone from the front noticed the line and yelled to the guys in back that they have customers waiting. One of them said ok, then proceeded to ignore us for another 10 minutes. I took my bike and went to Bike Connection on El Camino where I was in and out in 4 minutes. I don't know what happened to the others in line. They're still waiting for all I know. I won't be back.

2/5 - A Bumpy Ride (Literally and Figuratively)…read more As East Coast implants turned local explorers, my partner and I figured: why not play tourist in our own backyard? With plans to cruise through Foothills Preserve, Mets Park, and Edgewood, we were excited to saddle up on some e-bikes for a scenic Bay Area ride. Unfortunately, Campus Bike turned what should've been a breezy weekend into a bit of a gear-grinding headache. To be fair, if you're on Stanford campus, Campus Bike is pretty much the option for e-bike rentals. Monopoly mode: activated. But with great power comes... well, definitely not fully charged bikes. We rented two e-bikes for an overnight ride and an additional two days--$75 per bike, plus $30/day afterward, totaling over $200+. We thought we were good to go... until we realized both bikes were barely at 50% battery on day one. No biggie--we'll charge them at home, right? Wrong. The chargers for the Velotric Nomad didn't work. 1 out of 2 bikes had a faulty cord & power supply issue. Major buzzkill. Even after returning to swap out chargers, the replacement bikes were still undercharged. Cue déjà vu. To his credit, Aaron really tried to patch things up. He acknowledged the mix-up and compensated us for the inconvenience. Solid customer service effort on his part, but the damage was done. Our riding plans? Deflated. Our weekend itinerary? Scrambled. Our patience? Running on fumes. And if you're not a Stanford local? Good luck finding the shop. Thanks to campus construction, trying to return the bikes felt like navigating a corn maze inside a plastic bag. (Not recommended.) Final gear-check: for the price, the experience didn't quite shift into high gear. The foldable e-bike felt like a tricycle racing a Tesla compared to the Nomad. We wanted to like this place. We wanted to roll away happy. But between faulty equipment and rerouted logistics, Campus Bike left us spinning our wheels--and not in the fun way.

If you need something quick like a tire change this place is fine they'll just over charge you. Anything else, like electrical or battery issue, they won't even try and fix it. I bought a bike from them and they told us that they can fix any issue if it was a Campus Shop certified bike. A year later, they told me the bike was too old at the time of purchase that they don't carry the parts to work on it so it's out of warranty. Why even sell it then?! They are very rude and unhelpful unless you want to buy a bike from them.

When I walked in, no one asked if I needed any assistance for about 10 minutes. There were no other customers in the store. I walked up to Kevin, who was behind the counter. He seems disinterested and to be honest, sleepy. Now I think back, I regret not asking for another staff member, someone that deserved the credit for my purchase. Despite spending a few grands, Kevin was not courteous at all and rushed the whole process. A little bit of appreciation would go a long way in retaining customers. I tried to ask him a few questions but didn't get a straight answer. He seems to want to get the sale over with and me out the door as soon as possible. It's unfortunate that Palo Alto Bicycles, a LBS that's been around for a very long time, have staff members like Kevin. This staff member knows that customers like me keep them employed, yet they act like how he acted in this transaction with me. This is my first time buying a bike in over a decade, and this experience did not leave a good impression on me. Guess where I won't be going to next time I want to spend a few grands on a bike?
