Heartbroken and hungry, we kept walking around the area until suddenly, we find ourselves at Soler Street and this yellow sign was staring back at us: GREEN. PLANET. VEGETARIAN. Thank you, universe! I've tried a few vegetarian places in Binondo, but this relatively newish addition to Chinatown takes the whole cake! Taiwanese-owned Green Planet Vegetarian serves a variety of tasty vegetarian and vegan food at super 'sulit' prices. Much like a super clean, glorified 'turo-turo', you can get a rice meal with 3 viands for only Php 100, and with complimentary hot tea, too! Try their veggie sisig (creamy and dairy-free!) and their crowd-pleaser, fried miteng (gluten), which has a beautiful, chewy texture and savory flavor--amazing when dipped in vinegar. Another favorite of mine is their radish cake, a slice for only Php 15! Being sold here as well are vegetarian and vegan food items such as Magic Meat (dehydrated TVP made locally), canned barbecue sauce, and this Taiwanese granulated mushroom seasoning (reminiscent of the local Magic Sarap seasoning--look for the package with that very strange smiling mushroom). I've also heard from their staff that they're planning to open a Makati branch!

I don't care to join either side of this debate. What i do is eat vegetarian dishes whenever possible, but still go for red meat and fowl on a regular basis. Whenever I am out on the field for work, I usually end up heading for the nearest SM food court to eat, and I'm glad that a lot of them have a branch of Bodhi Vegetarian Healthfood. The taste of their various vegemeat dishes comes close enough to the real thing. One of my favorites is their version of sweet and sour pork, as well as their pork barbecue on a stick. Biting into either dish tells you that it can't possibly be real pork. This is where the tofu-based dishes is a dead giveaway that it's not the real thing. But then, you would know because this is a vegan place, remember? Bodhi has set meals for less than P100 and they even come with a teeny weenie cup of iced tea or soda as well as a complimentary mini cup of soup. When I was young, the only place to get vegetarian meals on a regular basis was the Adventist Hospital in Pasay City. I'm glad that we Pinoys have come to appreciate the health benefits of vegetarian food, and that there is a Bodhi Vegetarian Healthfood place nearby. Four stars for them,

It's a friendly introduction to vegetarian/vegan cuisine in Binondo, and at affordable prices, too. They have a wide range of mock meat dishes in Taiwanese, Chinese and Filipino styles. I got so excited when I saw that they have vegan corned beef hash! It's by far the best one I've ever had, and this place doesn't even use garlic or onion, yet their dishes are so flavorful! You get complimentary tea as well for each meal! If you're a fan of radish cakes, and if you want them a bit crispy on the outside, this is the place to get them. I personally prefer softer and chewier radish cake textures, though. Quan Yin Chay is also a good place to restock your all veg pantry. I also love theur fried lumpia, barbecue, and raddish cake which can be sold per piece. They also serve Fresh Lumpia, but theirs is more wet. Customer service was good, restaurant was cozy, and food was out of this world. I came today and saw they were in a new location. Initially felt "cool" but immediately was greeted with a cold demeanor. Half of our table are Filipino born and raised, while my sister and I are born in the US. I asked for bottled water and they had one bottle left. My dad (born in the Philippines), watched the lady who initially sat us down who mocked me for asking for bottled water. I had my back to the restaurant the entire time, so I didn't see a lot of the interaction, but my dad saw and understood it all. We ordered the sisig - undercooked. The pancit hab hab - underwhelming. They had no soda, and we all (9) had to share 1 big bottle of water. Ok, fine, no troubles. Then, they ran out of plenty of entrees, so we were limited on what to order. My sister watched the staff spray the table while there were still items on it, while my dad watched and listened as the staff were gossiping about all the patrons (including us) in the restaurant. It was quite uncomfortable. Sorry not sorry, but this place is no longer it and the entire staff needs an entire overhaul of retraining if you want to salvage this place.

Even if it's a bit of arts and culture you're craving, BF's got you covered, too. Artists Haven Gallery and Cafe is along Aguirre Avenue, the subdivisions' main road known also as a foodie destination in itself. From the outside it does seem really small, like what might be just another gallery.. perhaps a room and some paintings. Little did I know that it's truly like a "haven" for artists--spacious and beautifully designed interiors, a well-curated collection of paintings and sculptures, and they have a cafe too! It's a place that anyone would really be inspired to create in, or if you'd simply want to forget that you're in BF for a while, this is the place to go to "rejuvenate" your soul... or something. They also offer art workshops for kids and adults, too! If you're not much into the arts, don't walk away, they have a charming cafe for you. The dishes are named after painters! Though for vegetarians/vegans, there are only a few veggie options: just soups and salads, for which you'd have to still request to remove ingredients X, Y and Z from, just ask). I tried one of their best sellers, Crispy Suman con Tsokolate (you can request for dairy to be omitted), which is a good choice for a light merienda. I was able to chat with the owner of a place, and news is that they're coming up with regular events that involve live music and wine!

A trip to The Vegetarian Kitchen is a special occasion for me because it's far (I live in the south) and for me to go all the way to QC, it has to be worth it. And "worth it" is what TVK's food is all about. This place really knows how to do COMFORT FOOD so, so well. Each meal is plated beautifully and carefully, and (pardon the *vegan* cheese) with so much love. What I love about TVK is how vegan-friendly it is. The menu has "V" markers for vegan dishes, and makes it convenient for us vegans. I recommend the Tocino and Tofu Scramble if you're feeling breakfast-y. The Grilled Salmon with Coriander Pesto is a house favorite. You'll love the "fish" they used, which has a seaweed skin. The Grilled Steak Sandwich is great for meat-loving folks, and very hearty. For appetizers, their fried tofu skins are delicious (though, if you're oil-conscious, order something else). Every month they feature a different cuisine along with their regular menu, so clearly there's always a good reason to come here at least once a month! This place really does vegetables the justice they deserve, and this remains among the top veggie restaurants in my list.

The rice tasted like they old rice which would be perfect for your usual fried rice as that's what I use but this was too brittle. Even using my app, I almost walked right by the place because it's sign is small and long since faded and the entrance is a sliding glass door that looks like someone's porch entry into their home. If not for the lady visible in the glass door in a bright green shirt rolling out dumpling wrappers, I was unclear if I was at the right place. The sliding door really threw me off because you feel awkward sliding it open as if you are entering into someone's home. Once in it is a little more awkward because there does not seem to be a system to order or get a seat. (Getting a seat is going to be tough anyway as there are only about 15 seats in the place and several of them are taken up by the staff actually rolling out dough and stuffing dumpling wrappers amidst the patrons sitting next to them eating.) I ordered the pork steamed ones to go (14 to an order and it comes with chopsticks and a small knotted baggie of dipping sauce). These were the best dumplings I've ever had without a doubt. Wrappers are not quite paper thin but they are very thin and the filling is very porky with a lot of Chinese leek involved. Really, they don't get any better than this. This place has a following and is talked about by other foodies on their vlogs and it is no wonder why. Put this on your short list to visit when coming to Manila.

You are literally seated on simple tables, nothing fancy, and plastic chairs. There are no more than maybe 6 tables of 4-seaters since the dumpling station occupies part of the front half end of the restaurant and the chive chopping section is at the other end. It looks like an eat-and-go type of place. The menu provides about 20 items or so. Pictures are provided so you won't be totally clueless as to what you are ordering. They ran out of shrimp dumplings that day. We ordered soup dumplings (6 pieces for 120, or less than $3) and pork and chives dumplings (14 pieces, about $5). It does not get better than that! Cheap prices for really tasty dumplings. I think we inhaled it in 5 minutes. Okay maybe 10 minutes trying to prolong one dish to last before the next one came out with ravings of how good they were. I loved the homemade taste from each steaming dumpling. The soup dumplings were not the best I've ever had, but still homemade and delicious with every bite. I wish I could've eaten more pork and chives dumplings, but I was extremely full as it was only one of the many snacking spots we visited. Till next time.
