I called this facility regarding my dog having ingested a piece of plastic film and my advice was "you can bring the dog if you want. It's up to you". Our cat died in the ER at this hospital. We rushed her in for what initially appeared to be gastrointestinal distress. She was stable when we arrived, but overnight her condition deteriorated rapidly. Throughout the night, we were repeatedly told that her body temperature kept dropping after sedation and medical interventions began. We were left wondering whether her response to the sedation or medications may have played a role in her death. We understand that emergency cases can be unpredictable, but we left with many unanswered questions about the course of care. Ultimately, we went home without our beloved cat. We brought our cat to this ER three different times, and each time was a nightmare until we were finally seen by Dr. Fatourechi. The first two visits were dismissive and disheartening -- despite us repeatedly reporting that she was lethargic and not eating or drinking at all, we were told things like "believe it or not, there are other pets sicker than her." Somehow, a cat who hadn't eaten or had water in days and losing weight alarmingly fast was not considered an emergency. Instead of urgently addressing her decline, the focus was on hospitalization with fluids and "support care," without a plan or even a guarantee of the abdominal ultrasound she desperately needed. Each visit drained us financially, yet no one seemed to know what they were doing, nor did they show genuine concern to at least figure out what the root cause was. Had our cat died due to these delays, there would have been severe legal consequences -- no emergency vet should operate without enough staff to provide critical care. By the time Dr. Fatourechi saw her, our cat was deteriorating quickly. She was the only doctor who listened, respected our budget, and pushed for the ultrasound. That test finally gave us answers, and once we knew what we were treating, we hospitalized her. But the delays nearly cost our cat her life simply because there wasn't enough staff to administer the testing that was needed. Dr. Fatourechi is an exceptional, compassionate veterinarian who saved our cat. We are forever grateful to her. But the overall system at this ER is unacceptable -- turning patients away, downplaying emergencies, and operating without adequate staffing puts animals and families at risk. Everyone from the front staff to vet techs and the Veterinarian were great on our visit. Our dogs back hips suddenly stopped working and he was unable to get up, along with an odd breathing pattern. We took him in on a busy Friday afternoon by the time we got there his hips were at least better he could walk on his own but was so slow. They took him to to back quickly. The vet tech had great communication and told us it would be a while due to a dire emergency case that just came in. The Vet finally came in and gave some updates on his vitals. She also did had a very thorough conversation about our dogs medical history. Through this conversation, time, and research she uncovered an issue with medications he was prescribed by our local vet. We are so grateful that at the end of a long day our visit was treated with absolute respect and we figured out what was wrong. I cannot imagine working at an emergency vet hospital is easy, we are so thankful for everyone who helped us at VCA. read more

We came here on a Friday night after our local vet asked us to bring my 11 year old dog here due to fluid around the heart. We drove 15miles down to Irvine on a Friday afternoon. I called ahead to let staff know my vet already sent info. However, after I arrived, staff still seemed a bit puzzled on who we were. The interior is very upscale and you know it is all contributed by the costs they charge for emergency services. We waited a while before we were seen despite of being the only ones here. I explained my dogs situation a couple times to the tech and then to Dr. Fenty. She was sympathetic towards our dogs condition and said they could not do any cardio interventions without a cardiologists further work up. After hearing another around of possibilities, I asked that we just take our dog home if he is on his last journey in life. I would rather not put him through any more tests as it is right around Christmas. Dr. Fenty was respectful towards our decision but also provided us with options for further work up and LASSER animal hospital in LA for inpatient admission if we decide to drive another 40miles north. I don't even know why I took my furbaby to this hospital. I was calling another hospital on a Sunday, the answering service said for emergency, press 2 and I was redirected to VCA. However. I was able to see a doctor immediately. I think I was lucky as I was there early in the morning. They gave me a full explanation of treatments. But boy the quote!!! $$$$$. But it is for my furbaby, what can I do? Out come my credit card. I was quoted a treatment plan for 3 days. And then they suggested extending another 3 days. $$$$. There was no end to it. Just wait and see. They do have a 24x7 operations so I was able to visit during visiting hours. I waited for a whole hour every time though. The last time I was there, they let someone just arrived going straight in, so was I transparent?!? I thought my furbaby would die there. He was weak and the room with all the enclosures and technicians working in was big and noisy. Not sure they have enough people to pay any attention to the animals. I will NEVER go back again and will not recommend it to my worse enemy. read more

Never coming back here again! Don't come here if you want to spend more than $200 for just an exam. This place only cares about the money. They'd rather have you put your baby down because the doctors "don't think they will make it" instead of suggesting other options that are cheaper. I overheard a client that had visited their baby say that the technicians in the back are mostly sitting or not even paying attention to see if your baby is well or even breathing. This whole hospital is just sad, they have you wait in a room or upfront for hours with no update on how your baby is doing. One of the technicians I encountered was very rude and I simply just had more questions and concerns but I felt as If I was not being heard. She needs to work somewhere else. If I could give negative stars I would. Took my cat to her regular vet on Sat and she got a bunch of tests (blood, urine, x-rays) because she lost a lot of weight. By Tuesday the vet told me she was diabetic and needed to go to emergency vet to get fluids and insulin. Took her to VCA because they are 24 hrs. After the initial intake and speaking with the vet. They gave me an estimate of $9-11k for the next 48 hrs. They wanted to do more blood tests & X-rays. After I declined the estimate and told them I would take her to another vet. They prolonged the "discharged" papers and giving me my cat back. After that waiting 10min in their office to get my cat back, they asked us to wait in their lobby because they needed the room. We waited in their lobby another 30 min until I had to be very stern with them and ask for my cat back and I asked to pay for the exam. In those 30min we waited in the lobby, the three receptionist debated what type of food to order for lunch and talked about their boyfriends. This is an emergency vet and it's already stressful taking your fur baby to the vet and to not only be taken advantage of by their pricing but also have to listen to pointless and inconsiderate conversations is appalling. I have never been treated this way at a vet's office and to prolong a discharge of a emergency cat because I didn't want to pay a ridiculous inflated estimate is sickening. The night I visited VCA was already one of the worst nights of my life -- and VCA made it a thousand times worse. Our dog Jack was attacked -- what we now know was by a coyote -- in what we believed was the safety of our own home. That yard had been Jack's safe space for over 11 years. I let him out to the side yard while I was preparing his chicken meal, something I always did before bed to manage his low blood sugar and prevent nighttime seizures. Less than a minute later, I found him lying still in the yard. There was no blood, but his tongue was hanging from his mouth, and he wasn't moving. I feared his neck or back had been broken. A coyote had tunneled under the fence -- something we never could have anticipated. I wrapped Jack in a towel and frantically searched for a 24-hour emergency vet. I arrived at VCA around 12:30 AM. I rang the doorbell. The front desk buzzed the door open, but although the staff could clearly see my hands were full and I was visibly distressed, no one came to help me open the door. I struggled inside, and eventually, the back staff came and took Jack from me. I was told I couldn't go back with him until I filled out paperwork -- and then I was escorted into a room where I was left for 1.5 hour plus. During that agonizing 1.5 hour, a nurse came in and said Jack needed to be hospitalized and observed for 48 hours. While his neck wound seemed minor, there was a puncture wound in his abdomen that could be serious and might require surgery. She said she needed to consult with the doctor and would return. She came back with a proposed treatment plan totaling over $10,000 for two days of hospitalization. She added that they wouldn't have any updates until the next day after the Day Vet completed his rounds -- and that there was no guarantee of a time when I would hear back; it could be morning or later. Then I was told I had to pay in full before they could begin any treatment. I paid. Only after that was I told someone would come to take me to see Jack. When they finally did, I was led into a large clinical space with rows of pet chambers. Jack was wrapped tightly from head to tail in medical bandages, with fluids attached to his small body. The vet told me he might have a few broken ribs, but they wouldn't know for sure until more test results came in. I stood there in the open room, surrounded by staff walking past, unable to hold or comfort him. Eventually, they opened a small window so I could just barely reach in and touch his face. The doctor told me, "Sometimes they rest, and by morning they're full of energy!" I wanted so badly to believe them. With no alternative, I left -- expecting to wait for their call with more updates. Jack didn't survive the night. He died two hours after I left. After Jack's passing, my worst fears were confirmed in VCA's own medical reports. Jack had 12 broken ribs and multiple fractured vertebrae in his neck. Yet VCA had initially described his injuries as potentially minor and treated him as if he were stable. They wrapped and moved him without properly evaluating his spinal injuries -- a basic rule in emergency medicine. Jack arrived unable to move, unable to keep his tongue in his mouth, and unable even to whimper -- but no one at VCA asked me what I had observed or considered what his condition might mean before they mishandled him. VCA never gave me the chance to stay with Jack. They never allowed me to speak while they were evaluating him -- and if they had, I would have begged them not to move him. Their top priority was clear: payment, not care. I entrusted my sweet, scared Jack to strangers who didn't recognize -- or perhaps didn't care -- how seriously he was injured. I can only imagine the additional pain he endured as they wrapped his entire body without understanding his condition. Jack was in pain. He didn't understand why I left. And he died alone and scared, at 4:38 AM, just four hours after he was attacked. Maybe there was no hope of saving Jack. Our dog with an active heart failure got rejected for her follow up appointment because my past review of this place was negative. Unbelievable! They clearly do not care about your pet's life and take their chance to revenge a negative feedback, at the cost of the life of your pet. We went back here because of an emergency situation. They claimed that my dog is in critical condition and quoted $10,000 to get hospitalized with them. After we declined it to take our dog home, they suggested she will pass at home and need a follow up checkup the following day with a specialist. So we tried to schedule a follow up with them but the doctor rejected to see us because " I left a bad review last time so we're better off somewhere else". It is so cold hearted even just for a regular person, not to mention a vet whose priority should be saving lives. It is apparent that they do not care that your dog is dying and only care about $$$$. Overnight, my dog was sluggish and barely walking. Took him to our usual vet and they said his stomach was full of fluid. They recommended taking him to a specialist to get a more definitive answer. Took him to VCA. Vet was very warm and friendly. Turned out to be a very aggressive cancer. They offered surgery which wouldn't guarantee him a longer life. I decided to bring him home, give him one last night of love and yummy treats, and take him to be put down at our home vet. I paid thousands to hear he had cancer but they would send some of his fluids for additional testing. I called for weeks and they would not call me back after I told them I had put him down. It seemed like because I wouldn't be paying for the surgery, they were done with us. My dog was only 9... it felt really awful to put him down at such a young age when he was running and acting normal just the day before. I was relying on those test results to put myself at ease and give me closure about making the right decision. Welp! Didn't get it. I'm really disappointed... and heartbroken. read more

Instead of focusing on resolving the poisoning concern, I felt like the priority was billing. I was charged over $500 without receiving what I believed to be appropriate treatment or medication for the issue. I was also presented with a hospitalization estimate of $7,000-$8,000 for additional concerns that were mentioned, which I declined. I repeatedly asked for treatment specific to the poisoning but felt like my concerns were not addressed in a timely manner and ended up waiting for a long period without clear communication. The customer service lacked compassion during an already stressful situation. As our precious "Lily" cat is well in to her healthy, 6th year, just want to publicly give a warm UPDATE and a reminder "THANK YOU!" to Dr. McDooling and her AMAZING team there that SAVED LILY's LIFE, when she was just a little over a year old. Our RESCUE cat, Lily, unknowingly had a VERY complicated case where her "cough" was a symptom that led to Dr.McDooling and her team figuring out that Lily needed emergency surgery to SURVIVE because many of her internal organs (Liver, etc.) had been traumatically "pushed" up in to her heart area and her lungs were severely compressed by this. Not only did this team of surgeons SAVE HER LIFE (and successfully moved her displaced organs back in to her lower abdomen where they belonged), but they helped us emotionally, deal with the stress of Lily's 3 days of delicate recovery in Intensive Care and the several months of close confinement in a large (dog) cage at home, to limit her jumping and altering the surgery outcome. I realize that, by definition, VCA OC Veterinary Specialists obviously, sees many, REALLY TOUGH, COMPLEX case -EVERY- day, that other Vets are unable to address, but I want to make sure that others know that THIS IS THE PLACE to take your beloved baby if you want to INCREASE the odds of your pet having a good outcome. While they are humans doing heroic jobs there, I STRONGLY believe that they have ANGELS working above to support us all in this journey. Just wanted to give another shout out to this place. Last night my dog was having seizures and the front desk called the back and someone literally came running out to get Daisy. Dr. Mochizuki was compassionate and caring and explained everything thoroughly. The plan was to keep Daisy overnight. Unfortunately, medical science could no longer save our baby girl. Dr. Mochizuki called and asked us if we wanted to come back to the facility because she didn't think Daisy would last through the night. All the staff were wonderful. They helped make us feel at ease during this extremely difficult situation. The front desk girls were so kind as was the girl that did our intake. One of the techs made a point to tell us that earlier she was watching over Daisy. It comforted us to know she was in good hands. Another advantage to using this clinic is that they work with all the near by specialists. Daisy was under the care of the amazing Dr. Dillard. Although she was out of the office, one of the other neurologists was going to check on Daisy in the morning. read more

My 11mo puppy came down with a horrific stomach bug and wasn't taking any food or liquids. Dr. Looney and team immediately took her back for assessment upon arrival. He came in and gave me a full breakdown of available treatment plans- from everything he recommended and what it is for, and a bare minimum option in case cost was a factor. He was really transparent and seemed genuinely concerned about my puppie's well being. He even stayed late to finish her care (I was told there would likely be a shift to a night doctor). Typically, something like this would cause me a spiral of panic; however, I was calm during the wait because I just felt truly reassured that she was in great hands. Fast forward to this AM- she is already more perky and drinking fluids again and seems to be feeling so much better than she did hours ago. I highly highly recommend this facility. read more

Highly understaffed from the DVM position, such that they fail to communicate on a timely basis, rush through eventual communications and can be downright rude. The business appears adequately staffed with technicians although they are not allowed to provide medical information with clients. The administrative side of the business seems overstaffed, with either 2 or 3 employees available at the front desk often engaged in jovial conversations among themselves while clients have been ushered away in waiting cubicles so as not to overhear the ongoing banter. After now 27 hours, including an overnight stay we have yet to hear of ANY significant testing results or treatments. Do not bring your pet here for treatment. Search for other more highly rated veterinarians in the area. read more

A tad pricier visits than the other vets near by. But you can ACTUALLY get an appointment and sometimes even same day. The price is worth it. Vets are great and very helpful and patiently explain what is going on. And the medicines are about the same price (or cheaper) as other vets. Blood tests, ultrasound, X-ray etc are slightly more than other locations and surgeries seemed to be far more expensive than most vets. Luckily those items aren't needed as frequently. And they don't seem to recommend it unless necessary. Cats had fur loss, dogs had bad allergies, and the dogs had post neuter surgery complications (VCA didn't do the surgery but furthermore the complications are due to them being too active and nothing to blame on the surgery itself). All of the issues seem to be getting resolved quickly and easily with vitamins and medications. They didn't advise on aggressive unnecessary tests or corrections, rather suggesting to try the simple medicinal route first. saved us lots of money in the long run. I also decided to sign up all 4 pets for care club. So visits are free now anyway and I never have to hesitate to get them checked out. Before I would try to DIY ear infection cures with pet store ear drops and now I can get the better solutions immediately. read more

My entire experience with this facility felt like more of a money grab rather than vets with the intention to help. The Vet had more sales training than veterinary skills, wanting to upsell me on every possible turn. I declined everything after the initial blood work on my cat (which came back normal, but the Vet used that opportunity to scare me into thinking that the problem could be much worse and terrifying). I ended up taking my cat home and she returned to normal after a few days. If I continued on the advice of the vet I would be more than $5K in the hole before realizing my cat was going to be just fine. These vet hospitals/clinics have been bought out by big corporations because there is a lot of money to be made from people who love their pets like family and its truly disheartening that it seems it will only become worse. read more

i Just want to start by saying , I have never written a bad review in my life . Today is the first one .. Do Not Go to this Vet. We were told we could get scan to see if my dog was okay , we showed up found out the person to to the scan wasn't there . We called ahead and was told he was there . We showed up waited an hour and half , talk to the vet for 5 minutes , he told us our dog has cancer and not long to live . They then made us wait another hour an half befire we could see our very sick dog , they kept him in a cage the whole time and had no sympathy for us or our dog . Never been to a place with no empathy towards our horrible situation . This place doesn't deserve to be open . The workers would rather play on their phones than do there job or help . We cried in the lobby for over an hour and half . They could care less .. do not spend you money here , there are to many options out there . Shame on you, VCA . Maybe spend time on customer service than playing games on your phones. And treating animals and there owners unfairly and with no heart at all .. read more

Experience here was absolutely horrible due to one person Dr. Francis. We had known what was going on with our dog and she kept acting like we didn't despite telling her we had known what was wrong. She had completely no sympathy for us and our dog. She said we could leave in 30 minutes and then came out a few minutes later and said we should keep her there over night ?? And when we said no she completely rolled her eyes at us and stormed past me with a complete negative attitude and energy. They also mentioned $8,000 for one overnight stay with no essentials included in that. What was completely ridiculous was they said it was $25,000-30,000 for a stent surgery and the overnight fee which would all come out to over $50,000! Worst part with Dr. Francis was she was acting like our dog was about to die when we knew she was doing ok. And when Dr. Francis would come in she would start recommending things that were way to pricey that we had already given our dog. So thank you Dr. Francis for this wonderfully hideous and complete garbage experience and you don't deserve to be seeing animals. read more

Brought my cat in for an abdominal ultrasound due to chronic pancreatitis. Our vet, Dr King, was great and has a good personality. He was very knowledgeable and was able to prescribe me some meds for my cat to make him more comfortable. He was patient with my questions on the phone. All the staff were super kind as well. During the ultrasound, they discovered a mass in his stomach. I asked for a quote for an endoscopy and it was almost 9k to simply find out what kind of cancer my cat likely has. I think the VCA hires great talent and has some of the most extensive high tech facilities, but i just cannot afford their pricing :( Despite liking my experience at this facility, I am now looking elsewhere for more affordable pricing. If I have a grave emergency, I will be back here. Highly recommend Dr King! read more

Heartfelt Thanks to VCA Orange County Veterinary Specialists We cannot say enough good things about the exceptional care our granddog Juniper (affectionately known as Junie) received at VCA Orange County Veterinary Specialists in Tustin. Junie was referred to Dr. McDooling and the team by her regular vet, Dr. Dennison at VCA Yorba Linda, after a sudden and severe onset of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that left her fighting for her life. Her symptoms progressed rapidly--she went from being seemingly healthy to losing a significant amount of weight and energy in a very short time. In addition to IBD, Junie faced challenges with her kidneys, low blood albumen, and proteinuria. Dr. McDooling was incredible throughout Junie's treatment journey. Her straightforward and compassionate approach made a world of difference during such a stressful time. She clearly explained the treatment options and potential outcomes, ensuring that we could make informed decisions about Junie's care. The team's expertise, combined with their genuine concern for Junie's well-being, gave us hope during an incredibly difficult time. After about six months of diligent treatment, including medications (Chlorambucil and Prednisolone for IBD, Telmisartan for her kidneys, and others), prescription Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein food, and lots of love and attention, Junie is now back to her happy, healthy self. She's regained all the weight she lost (and more!) and is enjoying life again. While we know that a relapse is possible, we are so grateful for this recovery and credit Dr. McDooling and the amazing staff at VCAOC with saving her life. Junie's happiness during her visits to VCAOC speaks volumes about the team. She has always been a nervous pup when it comes to vet visits, but at VCAOC, she was excited to see her "friends." She would tug on the leash to get inside the clinic and was thrilled to see her special friends, Holly and Giselle. It's heartwarming to see how much she loved them. Specialty veterinary care is undeniably expensive, and VCAOC's prices are consistent with other providers in the field. From our experience, they were more reasonably priced than the boutique provider we visited on the first night of Junie's crisis. Dr. McDooling was mindful of costs and gave honest recommendations about whether certain treatments were worth pursuing, which we greatly appreciated. We were fortunate that Junie's owner, our daughter, had excellent pet insurance through Healthy Paws. The total cost of Junie's treatment exceeded $30,000, but with insurance, our out-of-pocket costs were about 20% of that, split between us and our daughter. This made the financial burden manageable and highlighted the value of having good pet insurance from the start. We highly recommend Healthy Paws based on our experience and urge pet owners to consider investing in insurance early in their pet's life. To Dr. McDooling, Holly, Giselle, and the entire VCA Orange County Veterinary Specialists team: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. If you are looking for an Internal Medicine Specialist for your fur kid in the OC, look no further. Dr. Andrea McDooling is a superstar. I am beyond impressed by the time and care she has given to our pooch and to me. It is clear that not only does she have a passion for pets, but she is passionate about giving them the best care. Dr. McDooling will not rush you through an appointment nor will she make you feel like you are one of many. She gives you her undivided attention and she spends whatever time is necessary to explain everything. She has superlative bedside manner. I am also impressed with the front desk staff and the techs at the VCA Orange County Veterinary Specialists. From my experience, they have all been friendly, understanding and attentive. They even answer the phone with a live person rather than a recording. I am delighted to see that this formidable level of pet care exists in the OC. I used to live in Los Angeles, and to say that the level of veterinary care has gone downhill there is an understatement. You may have to wait a bit for your initial appointment, however, the wait will be worth it. There is a valid reason as to why Dr. McDooling is in high demand. I would absolutely refer her to anyone who has a need for Internal Medicine Specialist for their fur-kid. read more

Was there with my dog for over 4.5 hours and spoke to two different people for about 5 minutes total. They asked me to call poison control because they were unsure how to treat. I called and was on hold for over 45 minutes and finally received a case number. It took them another 45 minutes to come in to retrieve the case number, even though I had told the reception I had it. Another 1.5 hours later, no updates, asked to speak with a Vet or Vet Technician, nobody came in. I had to leave due to a medical emergency at home. took them 30 minutes to check me out-they did give me the poison control report which stated they could not help because I did not have the original package. Please note the Vet did NOT come in and discuss the report with me at any time. i provided specific information on what my dog potentially ingested-did not provide treatment for what I had provided them. i understand they were busy, I asked several times to speak to someone. It was disheartening that poison control did not know how to treat yet still took my $95, the VET did not come into the room and discuss the *lack of* report with me and they would not try to help when I had a medical emergency at home.
