We got a coupon for $250 worth of exam, labs, and meds when we adopted Cooper and Mazikeen from Barcs. We took them early last week and I was super pleased with the service we received. Cooper was sick with a horrible respiratory infection, complete with pinkeye, when we adopted him. He proceeded to infect Mazikeen and the cat we already had at home. So the coupon really came in handy. They even let us bring in a stool sample the next day, because Mazikeen is having some slight issues (which turned out to be some other highly contagious infection), and the coupon covered that and the meds she'll need to get better. Unfortunately, VCA is in anne arundel County, which means about an hour in the van each way, so we will stick with our current vet, which is right down the street from our apartment, but I would actually recommend these guys if you live on that side of the river. I am extremely disappointed with my experience at VCA Calvert Veterinary Center in Pasadena, MD. I was charged for a membership plan that was never properly explained and never signed. The plan was presented as part of a treatment recommendation, not as a recurring subscription. There is no signed contract--not by me and not by the person whose name appears on the paperwork--yet my credit card was charged anyway. I have repeatedly contacted the clinic requesting clarification and a refund. Their response has been vague and dismissive, stating they are "waiting for guidance from their Legal Department," with no timeline, no follow-up, and no resolution. I also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and VCA did not respond at all. That alone shows how little they care about addressing customer concerns once they've already charged your card. This experience has made it very clear that this clinic prioritizes charging customers over transparency, accountability, or basic customer service. Management has been unresponsive, and there has been no effort to resolve an issue that should have been straightforward. I would strongly caution anyone considering services here to read everything carefully, ask for written contracts, and monitor your billing closely. Calvert has always provided exceptional and caring service to our dogs. When it was time to let our last dog go, they were so supportive and caring. We now have two small dogs we have inherited and they have been great with them,even working through their grieving process. They are senior dogs and I never feel pushed into anything but provided with clear information and choices. Today as we are driving home after the holidays from Florida one of them was having a panic attack. She would no longer take the medication we've tried to mask in every possible way. I called and spoke to Ashley who immediately understood the situation and spoke to the doctor. She said we could get the medication in liquid form and even called pharmacies in the area we were traveling through to find one that carries it and in a form safe for dogs. I'm very particular about where I take my Guinea pigs too as they are my babies, being new to the area I had to find vet and quickly as my sweet sesame hurt her eye upon arrival everyone was so sweet! Sesame's entire team was extremely sweet and careful with sesame and even went the extra mile to talk to her! Dr.Capella was the best! She not only gave me a welcome kit with wonderful info which I appreciated as not many Guinea pig owners understand the care needed but she also praised my husbandry of my Guinea pigs which was a WONDERFUL reassurance. Can't say enough good things! Our kitty was having trouble eating. Amanda asked detailed questions about what was happening, then got us fit in right away. Dr. White explained everything so well. She was patient, kind, and generous with her time. She handled our cat gently. She seemed knowledgeable. He required a procedure that night under general anesthesia. She went through all of the charges individually, providing details where necessary, prior to the procedure. Once surgery was complete, she called and again, explained what was done and next steps. She answered all of our questions and dealt with our anxiety in a calm manner. I'd love to also give kudos to the vet tech (Patty??? I've had one good and one bad experience. First visit was good, nothing overly special about it. Second visit was not good. Twenty minutes after my appointment was supposed to have started the receptionist called for the doctor again. Five minutes later the vet tech came out and wanted to weigh the dogs and play 20 questions with their record even though I expressed we were in a rush and nothing had changed. I asked if we would see the doctor and get the shots within 30 minutes of our original appointment time. I was told we would not. I needed to go to another appointment, so we left without the shots 35 minutes after our original appointment time. Not so much as a simple apology from anyone on staff even though the receptionist, the vet tech and eventually the doctor must have known they were over a half an hour late. I feel so lucky to have this as my veterinary office. I have four parrots and good avian vets/exotics vets are hard to find. I'd been seeing Dr Gilmurray for several years before she left the practice and I now see Dr Monica Capella. Dr Capella has been fantastic; she listens, she cares, she's well-informed about avian medicine and health, she answers questions, takes into account my theories and ideas based on research I've done, and provides additional information like research papers that are relevant to my parrots' health and conditions. They've seen me through health crises, the loss of a parrot, and ongoing medical care for special needs parrots that I care for. Calvert Vet has been my rock for many years. The front desk staff are always helpful and friendly and the vet techs are wonderful and knowledgeable as well. I was so grateful to the Calvert staff for making a last minute appointment for my dog Chico. While my husband and I were at work he popped his inflatable e-collar and the incision area looked irritated, I was worried he had licked it open. After calling three vets VCA Calvert was the only location to even try and get him in. They allowed us to drop off our fur baby and they promised they'd get him in when they could. They took such amazing care of him and the constant communication with us was so amazing and greatly appreciated. I was called after they examined him to talk about what they saw and possible options for treatment. I wasn't pushed to buy anything or do unnecessary treatment just to do what I was comfortable with, which I greatly appreciated. Prices were laid out beforehand and I received an email with a written note from the vet that saw Chico with great detail and explanation of his time there. The team at Calvert made everything fee so personal and made me feel comfortable and trusting leaving my baby with them. I was even able to get a prescription filled with them to avoid a second/third vet trip in one month. They also called following the appointment to follow up and make sure that everything was not just okay but better than when they saw him. I have so many mixed feelings about this place. The new space is nice, and they were really nice giving my dog a squeaky toy for a Christmas present. The staff even sent us a card when our cat passed away with everyone on staff's signature. What is bothersome is when I come in for an appointment, my wait has always been long. Once I waited an hour to see a doctor. They say Mondays are the worst, but it's the only day I have off consistently. It's a tricky balance because I know they squeeze people in, which is always going to overlap and push back other appointments. Calvert vet and especially dr. Gilmer is amazing! We have a black lab mix that we got recently, and about two months after we got her she had a sore on her lip. She ended up having mange. Dr. Gilmer diagnosed the problem and provided treatment with one visit. She and the vet techs were also very patient and understanding with our skiddish and scared rescue dog. When we came back for a check up, everyone remembered her and commented on how she was progressing with her comfort around places and people she doesn't know very well. Then the last time when it was confirmed that she was mange free, Dr. Gilmer was happy and excited that Annie was a healthy dog again! They were also accommodating with the fact that we were stuck in traffic and were able to still fit us in. We haven't had to wait more than ten minutes for our appointment. Every experience we've had has been amazing and they always send a follow up email to make sure Annie is doing well. The other great thing is that Dr. Gilmer is also an exotic animal vet, and we also have three snakes and a gecko. It's really comforting to know that our awesome vet is there if they ever have any health issues! We love Calvert vet! And we love Dr. Gilmer! read more

I've been taking almost all of my animals here for the last few years, and this is by far my favorite vet office. Dr. Gilmer is wonderful and personable, but very knowledgeable and not pushy in the slightest. She's helped me heal my oldest pitbull boy's partial cruciate tear as well as removed a mass from his foot. She's seen my girl pitbull and cats for routine checks. But just today my youngest cat had a flare up with his cystitis (bladder inflammation) and I called the office before 10am to see if they could squeeze me in today. All the staff was wonderful and I think I walked into the office a little after 10 and was seen right away. Dr. Gilmer was very thorough and even though my kitty had to stay for a few hours she kept me updated. The front desk staff are always wonder and Katie always asks about Cas (my boy pittie). They're excellent at responding to emails and texts as well! All in all, a wonderful place to take your pets! read more

I can't say enough good things about the Calvert Veterinary Center practice. The staff treats my cat and I like family friends. Every interaction with the practice makes me feel like a valued customer. Their support has made the entire pet care experience easier (my cat is older and has medical issues) and efficient. The first day I called I knew Calvert was the best place for my 11 year old cat because the receptionist was patient, kind, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Initially I wanted to find a vet who would perform house-calls (my older cat hates travel and I have a hectic & demanding work schedule). I called three other vets that advertised house-call services on-line. Each call I made got worse because no one treated me like they wanted my business. I was beginning to think I wasn't going to get my cat the much needed appointment (for what I suspected was kitty asthma). The receptionist helped me secure a convenient appointment, within days of my call. On the day of our appointment Dr. Calvert called 30 minutes ahead to confirm she was on her way. Dr. Calvert and Jenn (Tech) promptly showed up at my home, fully prepared. Immediately I was at ease with how my questions and concerns were answered with respect (it's disappointing when vets talk down to patients or treat questions as if they are "dumb"). My cat needed additional services (x-ray, etc) that required an office visit. Dr. Calvert immediately took my cat back to the office and performed all the necessary testing. Here's what impresses me the most: the constant, thorough communication. Within thirty minutes of returning to the office, Dr. Calvert called with information about what she found, what needed to be done immediately and what could to be done within the next few months (great for budgeting purposes!!). Dr. Calvert provided the facts, answered my questions and offered an estimate of the possible costs. My cat was ready, as promised at the agreed upon pickup time. Dr. Calvert made sure she was available to see me and explain the diagnosis (I never felt rushed when I asked twenty more questions!). I was so grateful to receive all of her information in written form (very important when you are in an emotional state). Every appointment since that day has provided my cat with the best care and exceeded my expectations. I recently saw Dr. Bruhl and I was equally impressed. Dr. Bruhl has a gentle, patient way about her and my cat was surprisingly comfortable (my cat isn't social outside of his home). Dr. Bruhl took time to review all my concerns about my cat's diabetic diet needs and showed me how to perform insulin injections. Diabetic pets care is very involved and a life changing event. Once again, Jenn (Tech) did a great job of making sure I left my visit with all the information in writing. Dara (front desk) shared her personal experiences of caring for a diabetic pet. . . . yet another interaction that left me feeling like I could handle this challenge. Dara reminded me that I can call any time I have questions or concerns (very reassuring). The staff takes care of calling in all prescriptions (less errands for me) and makes follow up calls to tell me the prescription should be ready. I always receive follow-up calls checking on my cat's progress, after each visit. I'm so grateful to have found such a fabulous, supportive team and I look forward to working with everyone for as long as I have pets!! read more

I will start out with the positive, their office is spotless always clean and the front office staff is always very friendly, I also think they are kind and gentle with the animals. But what price must you pay for that? I've been going there for a few years now and have always been happy, but here lately I feel that they push push push things on you. Before you even see the vet you see whom I assume is a tech that comes with a list pages long of test and procedures they try to push. I was even asked for a cataract and glaucoma test on my dog who I will admit is 14 years young, but the poor girl pushing the procedures seemed taken back when I asked "and if you find something then what" - she just looked at me until I finally asked so what's the treatment, glasses or pot? To have teeth cleaned they tried pushing a heart sonogram before hand for an additional $450. If I had taken them up on all the treatments they suggested my bill would have been in the thousands. My dog had a complete physical and blood work prior to her dental and anal procedure which was a separate charge. I'm not sure of the total cost of the initial visit because my other dog was also there for his physical but that bill was over $500. The dental and anal procedure itself ran over $600. But what I will admit pushed me over the edge was today when I took my dog in for a follow-up/recheck of the procedure. Anywhere I have ever gone a recheck is just that a recheck not an additional fee. They claim the recheck of the dental was included in the price but not a recheck of her anal. Now a routine anal gland that I take her in for on a regular basis is $28 but for the recheck they charged a total of $76. I left there today wondering which they actually care more about, our pets or their money. read more

I have two pits. They are extremely friendly and well mannered. Both of my pets have needed unexpected emergency attention. Calvert accepted my pets unconditionally when my home vet was not agreeable to seeing my pets with out an appointment. Calvert is also extremely helpful in every other aspect of pet ownership. They are always willing to answer questions by telephone and always follow up to any appointment with a phone call. We love Calvert and all of the Doctors. read more

Calvert used to have a pet portal and I suppose they no longer do. But when I call and "confuse" the person who answers the phone which then turns into an agitating two way conversation...I will have to reconsider. Incredible! Every staff member was friendly, and handled my dog in a calm and compassionate manner. I was referred to Dr. Fenner by a friend, and now I would recommend her to others. The office is clean and tastefully decorated. There is ample seating and plenty of space in the waiting area so it's easy to keep your pet at ease and out of the way of other visitors (I know one of my dogs would love to meet everyone, but they don't necessarily want to meet her!). The service was great and I was impressed with how quickly my visit was finished. I brought my dog in for an exam, vaccines, blood work, and urine collection and we were in and out in about 30 minutes. I had my dog seen here in December for a pretty bad wound on his foot. He was hit by a car and his foot was run over. We just wanted him seen asap so this was where we went. The technician who was helping with this appointment was 100% rude. After every question she had for me she has a condescending comment to my answer. What do you feed your dog? (We feed raw with holistic kibble.) I was lectured about the dangers of feeding him this way. What flea protection do you use? (we use Revilution.) I was then lectured that this was inadequate. Although I had advised my dog had a reaction to other products. Why is your dog not neutered? (We have not experienced behavioral issues, so we felt no need to early neuter. And will consider when he is full grown at 2 years old.) I was then lectured about how there are too many pit bull breeds in shelters, neutering will fatten my dog up, and I'm irresponsible for not neutering. (Who wants their dog to be fat? I'm happy with my dogs fit disposition!) there were also some rude comments about pit bull over population and pit bull aggression that neutering would solve. I'm sure somewhere in there were good intentions. But I didn't come in for a lecture on how to take care of my dog. I came for wound care. I was informed that his rabies was out of date. So we did the rabies while there. silly me was talked into paying out the rear end for that. Another thing about this place is they push over priced services on you. They wanted to run all sorts of tests on him...I did Not find them necessary. The doctor who treated his wound was very nice. Professional. Informative. I had to pin my dog down, and hold him down while they cleaned and bandaged his foot. I asked for a muzzle. He was terrified and I did not want for him to bite or act inappropriately out of fear. The technician made a comment about him needing a muzzle, and that maybe I couldn't control my dog. (In recognizing his distaste for the situation, I'm pretty sure muzzling him right from the get go was a responsible thing on my end. And little ole me being able to hold my 50 pound dog down while two strangers were causing him pain was me controlling my dog.) They recommended that we pay for them to change his bandages every other day. We could not afford this, nor did we think it was reasonable. I was again lectured on this by the technician, although the my personal finances are none of her business. And bringing my dog in for a $400 wound cleaning isn't my idea of cheap, but he needed to be seen. I made it work. So I brought my husband along the next day for a bandage changes as asked. We asked the new doctor to explain what she was using and how to do it properly so that we could do it their way at home. During this process I was again holding my dog down. He was less nervous today, but still weary of the strangers. My husband was watching as the doctor re-wrapped his foot. I asked the doctor twice to be sure to put gauze under his dewclaw. Since the gauze she laid out did not seem like enough to do the job, I wanted to be sure it was done correctly and not rushed. I assured her that I could hold him down all day. But that there absolutely had to be padding there. Or his nail would dig into his skin. I was assured that she was doing as I asked. We were asked to pay more than what we were quoted the previous day for the follow up visit. Funds were extremely tight. And I cannot stress this enough. We were allowed to pay the quoted amount and were told that they would speak to the people from the previous day. Front desk staff was always super friendly and my dog really liked them. We changed his bandages two days later. No gauze under his dewclaw!!! So now he had a bleeding open wound from his nail digging into his skin for two days. Not cool. Time goes by and his foot healed great with us wrapping it ourselves at home. No complications. Today I went to Calvert vet center to pick up his medical records. And to my surprise, written there on his records are some rude comments about me being difficult and very assertive..."owner is very difficult to talk with--she is very assertive and wants things done her way and cannot accept she may have done something wrong ie. Applied a bandage that was too tight" Wow. I suppose you expect people to sit and take you criticizing their every move when it comes to caring for their animal? But obviously I was not assertive enough, being that I asked for there to be ample padding on his foot and there was not. Which caused him further injury. I take assertive as a compliment. But difficult? Try holding your dog down for 20 minutes while he has open wounds poked and prodded at. That's difficult. I'm a little amazed at their level of professionalism with that one. I am not only dissatisfied by my two experiences in this office but am now completely and personally offended. I would never ever bring my animals there again. No matter how desperate we are to get an appointment. read more

I went to Calvert Veterinary Center in Pasadena, MD, because my regular vet was double booked and could not fit me in. I was concerned about my dog who had been vomiting and having diarrhea. They were able to get me in that day, which was the only plus of this visit. They saw my dog, felt his belly, did not take his temperature, look into his eyes, or take any vitals. The doctor said that his stomach was distended and she would provide a work-up. She came back with a "work-up" totaling $1000. I looked over some of the tests and also kept it for my amusement. Clearly, most of these tests were not even applicable. Why would a dog with stomach problems need an x-ray? (Maybe along the road if other conditions are ruled out but certainly not initially). I told her my concerns about the cost and that I could not possibly pay this amount due to the fact that I am a master's student. They came back with yet another work-up totally over $400. I asked them what was absolutely necessary and she told me everything on the list was necessary. The list still contained an immense number of tests including a full CDC panel, an X-ray, miscellaneous Vet fees of $200 (no explanation)? At this point, I just felt completely scammed. She never specified what she actually thought was wrong with him at all. She told me there was nothing she could do. I did have some concern about his fluid levels and got him re-hydrated before leaving. Needless to say I will be never be going back there. They had little concern for my dog, made me wait for a very long time and I finally left without discharge papers. AND THERE WAS NO DIAGNOSIS! This vet office is out to take your money. Update: I went to my regular vet and they told me that my dog had two problems that Calvert did not even find. Luckily, neither was life threatening. My regular vet was looking over the paperwork Calvert sent me with and laughing because they too know this place is a total scam. Calvert followed up with me by e-mail asking how my dog was about a week later and I had to laugh because I do not even think they know. Still no diagnosis on their part!!!! I never make it out of there in less than an hour. And in that hour it might have taken the vet and vet-tech combined 15 minutes (tops) that was spent with me and my animal.
