On a good day the horrid ceilings look like espetus. The weird array of lunch food. Yes, I used to eat just French fries for lunch. I also learned in the cafeteria why you don't put aluminum foil in the microwave! I went to this school when the only housing around was the southern most tip of the South Pinery. There wasn't the Mormon church or even the amazing Carl's Jr just a mile away. We were in the middle of NOTHING. I loved almost every teacher I had. The theater and band were quite good and well renown in the area. Same for the football team. Granted it has been almost nine years since my graduation, but my heart is still filled with Mustang pride! I'll miss sneaking outside of the second floor door to have a smoke...or having the worst Chemistry class experience ever. I miss you Ponderosa, and yet... I don't at all.

During my time at this school, I was assigned responsibilities well beyond my role, including…read morecovering ALL kindergarten library times, leading lunch announcements over the microphone, and supervising lunch/recess/hallway lines. Despite these expectations, I received little to no support from the administration. The demands of these responsibilities often conflicted with one another. My coworkers regularly expressed that the lunchroom was difficult to manage without my presence, while I was simultaneously expected to cover all kindergarten library times. This left me feeling like I was expected to be in two places at once and made it impossible to fully meet the needs of either responsibility. The principal rarely interacted with staff and visited my classroom only once every couple of months, often calling me by the wrong name. The vice principal consistently failed to follow through with student discipline and frequently required educational assistants to apologize for appropriately enforcing school expectations. Student behavior was often managed inconsistently. I was told by a kindergartener that the vice principal had given them a phone to watch TikTok. In another concerning situation, a fourth-grade female student who reported being punched in the stomach by a male classmate was allowed to decide whether her parents would be informed. Too often, it felt as though students, rather than staff, were in control. School administrators would often reprimand staff for not awarding Golden Tickets to students whenever a parent complained, even when those students had not demonstrated the appropriate behavior to earn the recognition that day. This created inconsistency in the school's behavior management system and undermined staff members' professional judgment. Instead of teaching students appropriate coping skills, conflict resolution, or self-regulation strategies, disruptive behavior was frequently rewarded with toys or playtime in the office. This approach undermined classroom expectations and made it difficult to maintain a safe, respectful learning environment. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this school as a workplace due to the lack of administrative support, unrealistic workload expectations, inconsistent discipline practices, and overall school culture. Lastly, my child attended this school and was not consistently challenged with work that matched their abilities or academic potential.

Dr. Brown, the principal, is so invested in her school, the teachers, and the students. Denver Academy is not the solution you are looking for…read more There were many situations that happened at my expense including a teacher announcing in front of the whole class that I had to be in therapy, in order to embarrass me. Another time my parents tried to write an email to the school about how it was hard for me to do a "working lunch" (where you sit in the classroom instead of going outside to complete work) because of issues with eating in the past. They completely disregarded my parents' worries until they escalated it to the principal who finally and indignantly accepted that I could sit in another room to do my work. At that point I hadn't been able to eat lunch at school for around a month. At one point during the year I finally felt comfortable eating in class and the teacher made a comment along the lines of "well looks like your parents were just being dramatic because now you can eat just fine, huh?" The same teacher later allegedly "mistook" my name in an email for someone else, (whose name sounds nor looks like mine in any way so he took me out of class during my final exam, yelled at me in his office until I was crying, threatened to expel me and told me I couldn't get into any college if I had that on my record. When my parents emailed him about it, he completely denied it and lied about it. This was what ultimately led me to have to leave the school halfway through the year and now I am completing the rest of my sophomore year online in a different program. This school takes advantage of desperate parents who want what is best for their child who has most likely been struggling in school. Their signature quote "We teach students the way they learn best" should be changed to "We teach students the way that is easiest for us". Where parents and kids think they have finally found a safe space for their kid to grow and thrive it is actually the opposite. The sheer amount of bullying from teachers and students alike that I witnessed at my time there is more than any public school I have ever been to in my life. Please do not send your child here.
