We were told that Varsity tutors not only vetted all their tutors, but provided a personalized tutoring experience when it came to 1:1 SAT prep. During their sessions the tutor, Darian, told her to skip over the questions she struggled with and only reinforced what she already knew. They then no showed for their last session for the day before the test. Varisty tutors is legit, but not reliable. The tutors I was paired with have been nothing short of amazing, but the company is so bad. First of all, their payment system is like a subscription plan. If you want to not pay more than just the hours you requested, you have to cancel, but if you cancel but you still have hours left, they disappear, and you have to go through so many hurdles to get your prepaid hours back. Second of all, you can't cancel a session within 24 hours of it being scheduled, but if your tutor tells you that they cancel last minute and don't reschedule the session properly, you get charged a no show fee. Third of all, you pay, quite literally, by the minute. I sometimes had to wait for my tutors since they were sometimes a bit late to the session, my "session hours" were counting for every minute I was waiting and if they went over as a result of that, it would still continue to be counted. So even though I was supposed to have 2x 1 hour sessions left by the end, I only had enough time for one 1.5 hour session. Varsity Tutors punishes the student. You're better off finding a private tutor and paying them by session. read more

Varsity Tutors I purchased 8 hours of service for my daughter and was approved in May to carry forward 6 unused hours due to a personal emergency. However, after I disputed an unexpected additional charge on my card on June 18, my account was suddenly blocked. Now, the company is refusing to honor the 6 hours I had already paid for--even though they had previously agreed to carry them forward. This feels completely unethical and unprofessional. I signed up to learn how to use my New Macbook Air after being a PC user my whole life. I'm using to write a book. My tutor Daniel Haynes was EXCELLENT! My initial assessor who assigned Daniel to me signed me up for 6 sessions at $314.00. I thought 'okay, I can do that!' I can afford $300.00. I am 65 and on Social Security so one month is all i could afford. I had to postpone one of the sessions due to having the flu. SO I DIDN'T EVEN USE ALL MY HOURS. On February 11th without any warning or permission I was charged ANOTHER $300.00!!! NO WARNING! They said "it's in the contract'. I didn't sign ANY CONTRACT! This is OUTRAGEOUS!! I requested my CC be refunded. They said they would "see if I qualify for a refund and contact me in 48 hours!!" Not send me to billing, not get me to an escalation supervisor or to billing management, but just leave me hanging for 48 hours until I know whether or not I get me money back for services they have NOT RENDERED! So beware! They keep your credit card on file, charge you ahead of time for classes you did not request, and without your permission with ZERO WARNING!! This is not an online system I would recommend. It's too bad because I loved my tutor! Do not waste your money with this company. I signed up my cousin for tutoring with this company. I let them know we were just doing the one month membership with lessons twice a week since her test was coming up. The man who signed us up over the phone definitely talked a good game, and even said they would be able to do that timeline and he was initiating the search for a tutor in their system so we can start soon. He did not start the search, pushing our schedule back 2 weeks. He also set the account to auto renew, and the tutor we finally ended up getting let us know after our first session that she didn't have the availability we needed so we had to wait additional days for a new tutor. Also the proctored ACT they offer doesn't give you a score to go off of because they have them put their answers on a piece of paper instead of inputting it on the computer. Therefore, there's nothing for them to score resulting in us having nothing to go off of. We were hoping to get scores from the proctored ACT at least so we can have an idea of which area to spend more time with tutoring before she takes the official one. Also, they refused to give me my money back for the additional month they charged me even though I let them know at the beginning we would only be signing up for 1 month and the man who signed us up understood that. read more

Varsity Tutors repeatedly breached the service contract, leaving my high school daughter hanging. Ultimately, I had to threaten filing a lawsuit to get it through to them how poor their service (or lack thereof) was. On multiple occasions, they did not start the tutoring sessions. One time, the excuse was the link to connect was bad. Another time, the tutor had called in sick, but we still received a text reminder that the session with the tutor was ready to start in 15 minutes. No contact that tutor was unavailable. Ultimately, they had two separate tutors not make it even a full month. We were only scheduled for 2 one-hour sessions per week. We never received full service even though they charged $589/month for two months. I had to demand my full money back, then the manager I spoke to on the phone had the gall to ask why I should get a full refund when my daughter had done 2 one-hour sessions already. Uh, because your company repeated breached & should be grateful I don't sue. Horrible company that strings you along while your child's education suffers. read more

When I signed up on 8/11, as was discussed on the phone with me, I was signing up for 2 months of tutoring. Based on the day those sessions started, I figured that meant they would go until mid October. He and I had discussed that I wanted 12 hours per month that would be 2 sessions per week at 1.5 hours long. He never told me that the month meant a calendar month for $750. Given that we discussed the timing of 2 sessions per week, it would not even have been possible to use all 12 hours in the month of August. See how that doesn't even make sense? I would never have paid $750 for 12 hours that had to be used in half a month. I would have delayed until September to get two full months. So, August ended up forfeiting 4 hours I was told yesterday. No one in their right mind would do that knowingly. Now, second issue where someone could have cleared all this up but did not. The tutor we were assigned only set up one session per week originally that was an error or your part. When I called somewhere around mid-August to inquire about that, I asked how the two missed sessions would be made up? I didn't want to have to cram my daughter with 3 sessions a week and asked if they could just be added to the end and I was told that would be fine, that they would note that on your end. Please listen to that conversation also. Why would I think this was on a calendar month having been told that? After "reviewing" they refused to make it right by refunding me the extra month that I had not used yet and my only option was to try and use those hours to try and get something for my money stolen from me. And I'm still forfeiting hours because my daughters test is tomorrow and it wasn't possible to use all the hours. read more

Was so excited to get tutoring for my son. It was set up on Sunday the 28th of January and then got rescheduled at the last minute to that evening. Then right before getting ready for tutoring it got canceled Sunday night. Then the tutor set up Monday tutoring at 8:30 pm but she canceled again for internet issues. Rescheduled for Tuesday night and the meeting I confirmed just disappeared. I reached out to the tutor to ask what was going on and see why tutoring was canceled and she has just flat out ignored my message and never got back to me. We used Varsity Tutors twice for SAT prep. Once for my son and two years later for my daughter. Generally, we are disappointed with this company. Specifically, the billing policy does not allow any flexibility. The membership starts immediately with a phone representative. It takes a few days to get matched with a tutor and then a few days more to complete the first session, if both you and the tutor's schedules line up quickly. The hours purchased must be used by the end of the contract month or they are lost. We had issues ranging from having trouble scheduling sessions to needing a completely new tutor for various reasons. All while the clock is ticking. When we finally had a good tutor match with manageable schedules, the sessions worked well. But the hassle was not worth it. In addition, when we tried to end the membership since the tests were going to be done, they persisted with hard sell tactics to get other Varsity Tutor products. This is just a company that is trying to maximize profits and doesn't really care about the student or the tutor. You're better off using some other tutor service. read more

We signed up for two subjects. The tutor was nice enough, but my daughter's tutor taught differently than her school, and since process impacts your grade, that had an effect. My main piece of advice though is DO NOT pause your membership- just cancel outright. My request to cancel crossed their billing cycle so I got charged for an extra 8 hours. They stay in contact with you to make sure you are happy with their tutors, and resources and to see how they can better give you what you are needing. Their customer service is fantastic! My son has been tutoring just for the math for the ACT and will retake his test this weekend. He has enjoyed his tutor and the resources provided on the website are pretty incredible too! I signed my son up for tutoring on an upcoming state exam. The first meeting with the tutor involved tech issues, and my son couldn't even see her screen. These issues lasted for the first 30 minutes of the session. Also, She was confused about which test he needed assistance with, and I communicated that with the tutor. The second session didn't happen because when my son signed on, the tutor mentioned she was having tech issues and she contacted Varsity Tutors, but they hadn't responded in time for the session. I told her he could do it the next day. Didn't receive a response until later that evening. I canceled the services, and two weeks after that, I received a call saying that the tutor had quit and I should look for another tutor. Poor communication within the organization! I requested a refund, and it was denied. I asked for an explanation and was told they don't refund used hours. But where were the used hours? If I were depending on them to help my son with the exam, it would have been for nothing. No apology or efforts are being made to rectify this situation. I paid them for a service that they didn't offer to me. Plus, they are giving me the runaround, fulfilling my request, and giving me a full refund. read more
