I am wrapping up the first month of tutoring sessions for my daughter for PSAT math help. The first few weeks were up and down with this company. It took a few tries to find a math tutor for her that was a good fit, but VT really worked with us. I did have to call them several times until they finally assigned us a consistent rep to help us navigate the system. AJ has been fantastic. He actually followed through with helping us get the right tutor, he called to check in to make sure the appointments were scheduled correctly and he made sure we could access the extra hours. I had almost given up on VT until he stepped in. Now my daughter has a math tutor that is clear in his explanations and whom she really likes. If her scores increase in October, we will definitely use them again next summer. read more

Be very careful before signing up with Varsity Tutors, especially with prepaid sessions. I prepaid for 8 tutoring sessions and only used 3. I needed to take a break and wanted to wait for my tutor to return, but I was told that I could only pause my account for a maximum of 30 days. When I explained that I wanted to cancel instead, I was told that they would not prorate or refund me for the 5 unused sessions that I had already paid for. This is extremely disappointing. Life happens. What if a customer becomes seriously ill, has a family emergency, needs to travel unexpectedly, or simply needs to stop tutoring for a period longer than 30 days? In my experience, the choices were essentially to resume within their allowed timeframe or lose the money I had already paid for unused sessions. I understand paying for the 3 sessions I actually used. I have no issue with that. My complaint is that I paid in advance for 8 sessions, used only 3, and they would not refund the unused portion after I canceled. Please be very careful before signing up and paying in advance. Make sure you fully understand their cancellation, pause, and refund policies before giving them your money. I would not recommend prepaying for multiple sessions based on my experience. read more

We were told that Varsity tutors not only vetted all their tutors, but provided a personalized tutoring experience when it came to 1:1 SAT prep. During their sessions the tutor, Darian, told her to skip over the questions she struggled with and only reinforced what she already knew. They then no showed for their last session for the day before the test. When I called to complain the company they basically said it was my fault for not reporting the issue sooner. 100% believe Varsity Tutors was a waste of time and money. read more

I highly recommend against using Varsity Tutors. Not only did my child's SAT score go down after the tutoring, but the company engages in questionable practices by requiring you sign up for a monthly subscription and making it difficult to cancel. I have reported them to state and federal authorities but in the meantime, beware of this company preying on vulnerable parents and students. read more

We hired Varisty Tutors to work with our son for additional SAT readiness. The tutor was excellent and overall was impactful to his success with the test. Organizationally, however, the billing system is absolutely terrible. BEWARE! You can only cancel your subscription through a phone call. It is not possible online: not through a written email and not through the online portal. I do not recommend using this service. Find something local and trustworthy. Very disappointed with the billing system! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND FINDING AN ALTERNATIVE. read more

The agent was patronizing and unprofessional when I called to consult the tutoring services and cost. She even kept texting after the fact that I had declined the services and requested talking to my husband to discuss payments if I was not making the decision of the payment. I obviously declined but she insisted on giving me a deadline to respond and kept texting. I felt a bit harassed and of course preferred not to take the service. It seemed like a scam call at some point! read more

Unreliable, deceptive, and unprofessional! If you're looking for a good tutor to prep your children for higher education look elsewhere and save your money and time. They take forever to match you with a tutor and then the tutors they hire keep canceling. Kaplan is a household name for a reason I wish we saved ourselves from Varsity Tutors read more

Varsity Tutors I purchased 8 hours of service for my daughter and was approved in May to carry forward 6 unused hours due to a personal emergency. However, after I disputed an unexpected additional charge on my card on June 18, my account was suddenly blocked. Now, the company is refusing to honor the 6 hours I had already paid for--even though they had previously agreed to carry them forward. This feels completely unethical and unprofessional. I'm extremely disappointed with how this situation has been handled. read more

Wow what a scam. I had a tutor who rescheduled or cancel each session I booked. Eventually I requested a new tutor and got reassigned but would not be able to complete my hours before the new payment schedule. I spent all day on the phone to get my hours reinstated, only for the platform to cancel my tutoring and lose my hours completely. I got 50% of the service I paid for. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Target Test Prep, Princeton Review, Manhattan Prep are better resources. read more

No recommend, you will find better programs out there. Varsity has a poor costumer service, a lot of miscommunication. They will never issue a refund even if it is their fault. THIS PROGRAM IS A SCAM read more

If I could do a true review, would be no stars only tells you what you want to hear, but they don't listen to anything that you actually request they give you teachers who are rude incompetent, and don't expect your full hour of tutoring when there are issues the company will say everything that you wanna hear and do none of it. They will take money out of your bank account even if you've canceled your monthly fees and you've canceled your plan I could go on and on and on, but I would never ever recommend this company to anybody. read more

Varisty tutors is legit, but not reliable. The tutors I was paired with have been nothing short of amazing, but the company is so bad. First of all, their payment system is like a subscription plan. If you want to not pay more than just the hours you requested, you have to cancel, but if you cancel but you still have hours left, they disappear, and you have to go through so many hurdles to get your prepaid hours back. Second of all, you can't cancel a session within 24 hours of it being scheduled, but if your tutor tells you that they cancel last minute and don't reschedule the session properly, you get charged a no show fee. Third of all, you pay, quite literally, by the minute. I sometimes had to wait for my tutors since they were sometimes a bit late to the session, my "session hours" were counting for every minute I was waiting and if they went over as a result of that, it would still continue to be counted. So even though I was supposed to have 2x 1 hour sessions left by the end, I only had enough time for one 1.5 hour session. Varsity Tutors punishes the student. You're better off finding a private tutor and paying them by session. read more

I signed up to learn how to use my New Macbook Air after being a PC user my whole life. I'm using to write a book. My tutor Daniel Haynes was EXCELLENT! My initial assessor who assigned Daniel to me signed me up for 6 sessions at $314.00. I thought 'okay, I can do that!' I can afford $300.00. I am 65 and on Social Security so one month is all i could afford. I had to postpone one of the sessions due to having the flu. SO I DIDN'T EVEN USE ALL MY HOURS. On February 11th without any warning or permission I was charged ANOTHER $300.00!!! NO WARNING! They said "it's in the contract'. I didn't sign ANY CONTRACT! This is OUTRAGEOUS!! I requested my CC be refunded. They said they would "see if I qualify for a refund and contact me in 48 hours!!" Not send me to billing, not get me to an escalation supervisor or to billing management, but just leave me hanging for 48 hours until I know whether or not I get me money back for services they have NOT RENDERED! So beware! They keep your credit card on file, charge you ahead of time for classes you did not request, and without your permission with ZERO WARNING!! This is not an online system I would recommend. It's too bad because I loved my tutor! But I can no longer afford to their system of billing or trust their management of their students money management. BUYER BEWARE!! VERY DECEPTIVE!! read more

Beware of what you signup for. We want to try for one month and they put us on monthly plan without our approval. We never used the service but end up paying for 7 months. Called them but they gave excuses. When you sign up make sure you cancel immediately by calling them. read more

They STEAL your money. 1) I have been charged almost $5,000 for services we did not use, because it's nearly impossible to cancel. 2) I have six kids. We have used many tutors/services over the years. This one is awful. We chose this membership because of the on-demand option. The reality is this service does NOT EXIST!! We could literally never connect with a tutor on demand, when my kids needed it. When you try to cancel, they don't cancel, but give you more hours. They also don't let you cancel online, through your account. I have literally cancelled, very clearly, twice. And I just now noticed yet another $369 taken out of my bank account! Absolutely unreal that a company can just steal from people, let alone for a service they did not even provide. I have also reported this to BBB. read more

Do not waste your money with this company. I signed up my cousin for tutoring with this company. I let them know we were just doing the one month membership with lessons twice a week since her test was coming up. The man who signed us up over the phone definitely talked a good game, and even said they would be able to do that timeline and he was initiating the search for a tutor in their system so we can start soon. He did not start the search, pushing our schedule back 2 weeks. He also set the account to auto renew, and the tutor we finally ended up getting let us know after our first session that she didn't have the availability we needed so we had to wait additional days for a new tutor. Also the proctored ACT they offer doesn't give you a score to go off of because they have them put their answers on a piece of paper instead of inputting it on the computer. Therefore, there's nothing for them to score resulting in us having nothing to go off of. We were hoping to get scores from the proctored ACT at least so we can have an idea of which area to spend more time with tutoring before she takes the official one. Also, they refused to give me my money back for the additional month they charged me even though I let them know at the beginning we would only be signing up for 1 month and the man who signed us up understood that. read more

Understand that this is the monthly subscription based service for 8 hours. if you don't use the hours then you loose the hours and they will charge it next month automatically. I had the above issue and after calling them multiple time finally management got involved and on - 12/19/2024 I received a call back from the management and they understood what had happened and they are working with me to give money back for the 2nd month. Thank you management team for your co-operation. The tutor they had was easy to work with. We would definitely go back if we need the service again. read more

Horrible! I signed up by phone to help study for an upcoming exam and was not told that I would be billed every month moving forward. Varsity tutors is now saying they will not refund 2 unauthorized $499 dollar charges on my credit card. Not to mention the tutor they initially provided me with was worthless, he was using Chatgpt to try and figure out my questions because he did not understand it himself. This company is impersonal and worthless. read more

Varsity Tutors repeatedly breached the service contract, leaving my high school daughter hanging. Ultimately, I had to threaten filing a lawsuit to get it through to them how poor their service (or lack thereof) was. On multiple occasions, they did not start the tutoring sessions. One time, the excuse was the link to connect was bad. Another time, the tutor had called in sick, but we still received a text reminder that the session with the tutor was ready to start in 15 minutes. No contact that tutor was unavailable. Ultimately, they had two separate tutors not make it even a full month. We were only scheduled for 2 one-hour sessions per week. We never received full service even though they charged $589/month for two months. I had to demand my full money back, then the manager I spoke to on the phone had the gall to ask why I should get a full refund when my daughter had done 2 one-hour sessions already. Uh, because your company repeated breached & should be grateful I don't sue. Horrible company that strings you along while your child's education suffers. read more

Was so excited to get tutoring for my son. It was set up on Sunday the 28th of January and then got rescheduled at the last minute to that evening. Then right before getting ready for tutoring it got canceled Sunday night. Then the tutor set up Monday tutoring at 8:30 pm but she canceled again for internet issues. Rescheduled for Tuesday night and the meeting I confirmed just disappeared. I reached out to the tutor to ask what was going on and see why tutoring was canceled and she has just flat out ignored my message and never got back to me. FOUR TIMES I got ready for tutoring and never got tutoring for my son. read more

We had a somewhat rough start, but they went above and beyond to make it right. Hoping to have a good experience moving forward.

Signed my daughter up for one month of tutoring before taking the SAT. Varsity later charged my credit card without authorization for another month and must have lied to the bank about our agreement during the credit card dispute process. I wish there was the option to give ZERO stars. read more

When I signed up on 8/11, as was discussed on the phone with me, I was signing up for 2 months of tutoring. Based on the day those sessions started, I figured that meant they would go until mid October. He and I had discussed that I wanted 12 hours per month that would be 2 sessions per week at 1.5 hours long. He never told me that the month meant a calendar month for $750. Given that we discussed the timing of 2 sessions per week, it would not even have been possible to use all 12 hours in the month of August. See how that doesn't even make sense? I would never have paid $750 for 12 hours that had to be used in half a month. I would have delayed until September to get two full months. So, August ended up forfeiting 4 hours I was told yesterday. No one in their right mind would do that knowingly. Now, second issue where someone could have cleared all this up but did not. The tutor we were assigned only set up one session per week originally that was an error or your part. When I called somewhere around mid-August to inquire about that, I asked how the two missed sessions would be made up? I didn't want to have to cram my daughter with 3 sessions a week and asked if they could just be added to the end and I was told that would be fine, that they would note that on your end. Please listen to that conversation also. Why would I think this was on a calendar month having been told that? After "reviewing" they refused to make it right by refunding me the extra month that I had not used yet and my only option was to try and use those hours to try and get something for my money stolen from me. And I'm still forfeiting hours because my daughters test is tomorrow and it wasn't possible to use all the hours. read more

Avoid this company unless you are absolutely sure to get tutoring for the long haul. It's damn near impossible to terminate your membership. It's even hard to cancel a single tutoring session. They charge you long after you've attempted to cancel. read more

Do not use this company! I signed up for GRE tutoring and was promised a tailored approach to studying for the test. The tutors are unprofessional, not knowledgeable in the subject matter, and could not even give me a personalized study plan. They want you to study on your own and come to ask questions, but are not willing to teach the subject matter. I tried 3 different tutors and all were a bad fit, so I have requested a refund. read more

Just don't. If you have money to spend on a long term contract with Varsity Tutor, consider sending your kids to a private school. This is just not worth it, and it is a great business model for them, but not for your kid who needs a close personal attention. The company claims to have thousands of tutors available, but the actual tutor your child gets can be random and lame. We live in the competitive Northern Virginia area, and the only tutors we were matched were from some remote out of no where area who have no idea what our kids are going through. The company does the matching this way because, I assume, 1) they don't want parents to meet with local tutors without them and 2) that's all they got. We just wasted our money and time. read more

It was never explained I was being signed up and would incur a $ 329. monthly charge for 4 classes of Quickbooks online. I had only completed 1 of the online sessions and have been billed for the next 4 sessions. I have requested to have my membership / involvement with Varsity Tours and a refund for the 2nd payment. My request for refund was DENIED. I have filed a dispute with my bank and will be posting this as a review on google reviews. read more

We signed up for two subjects. The tutor was nice enough, but my daughter's tutor taught differently than her school, and since process impacts your grade, that had an effect. My main piece of advice though is DO NOT pause your membership- just cancel outright. My request to cancel crossed their billing cycle so I got charged for an extra 8 hours. Luckily, they did move the hours to the fall so they won't expire over the summer. read more

We used Varsity Tutors twice for SAT prep. Once for my son and two years later for my daughter. Generally, we are disappointed with this company. Specifically, the billing policy does not allow any flexibility. The membership starts immediately with a phone representative. It takes a few days to get matched with a tutor and then a few days more to complete the first session, if both you and the tutor's schedules line up quickly. The hours purchased must be used by the end of the contract month or they are lost. We had issues ranging from having trouble scheduling sessions to needing a completely new tutor for various reasons. All while the clock is ticking. When we finally had a good tutor match with manageable schedules, the sessions worked well. But the hassle was not worth it. In addition, when we tried to end the membership since the tests were going to be done, they persisted with hard sell tactics to get other Varsity Tutor products. This is just a company that is trying to maximize profits and doesn't really care about the student or the tutor. You're better off using some other tutor service. read more

I can't speak for how the tutoring actually was and if it helped my student, but I can say don't even try to get your money back if you didn't use it, or even extend the month you paid for. My son got sick and couldn't use it, so I called and they cancelled my membership no problem but said they would have to "review" if I could get a refund for the 3 hours and 45 minutes I didn't use (paid for 4) and they would not do anything for me and just kept beating around the bush how great it was and just wanted me to sign up for more. Um, I don't have over 300$ to spend every month lady. They offered me nothing, just wanted my money. read more

BEWARE! Quality tutors, but your pre-purchased hours expire and you will not be able to use them after one year. I purchased 50 hours for my kid last summer and had 18 hours left at the end of the year. This represented about $1000.00! And they won't let me use those hours and require me to purchase more! They won't refund my money! They won't let me use the hours I ALREADY purchased over the summer! This is non customer and non kid centric. They cited their rationale as "it's our policy". read more

After my horrible experience, and since posting my review, I am being bombarded nearly daily by varsity Tutor via email or text. I have asked them to cancel my account and I get an email stating they did, then right after I get a text asking me to schedule tutoring?!!! What part of I am done with your horrible services do they not get? I am sick and tired of their request, their right hand doesn't know what their left hand is doing! I will be so pissed if they charge me this coming month after I have asked for cancellation . They are a total scum! Please save yourself the aggravation and do not sign up for their services. You will end up throwing away your money and it is likely they will not let you go so easily! I am shocked they keep harassing me and act like they do not know I was having all these hardships actually scheduling a tutor who would show up or not cancel. If anything I hope this review saves one person from having my experience. Sadly I can't even get a clean break from them. read more

We have been very pleased with Varsity. They are very professional and thorough. They stay in contact with you to make sure you are happy with their tutors, and resources and to see how they can better give you what you are needing. Their customer service is fantastic! I signed my son up for tutoring on an upcoming state exam. The first meeting with the tutor involved tech issues, and my son couldn't even see her screen. These issues lasted for the first 30 minutes of the session. Also, She was confused about which test he needed assistance with, and I communicated that with the tutor. The second session didn't happen because when my son signed on, the tutor mentioned she was having tech issues and she contacted Varsity Tutors, but they hadn't responded in time for the session. I told her he could do it the next day. Didn't receive a response until later that evening. I canceled the services, and two weeks after that, I received a call saying that the tutor had quit and I should look for another tutor. Poor communication within the organization! I requested a refund, and it was denied. I asked for an explanation and was told they don't refund used hours. But where were the used hours? If I were depending on them to help my son with the exam, it would have been for nothing. No apology or efforts are being made to rectify this situation. I paid them for a service that they didn't offer to me. Plus, they are giving me the runaround, fulfilling my request, and giving me a full refund. read more

If you are thinking of hiring a tutor, call Varsity tutors. This company is highly professional, knowledgeable, and provides top notch customer service. Few things went wrong with scheduling, but this company was on it and made everything better. And the tutors....very bright. I cannot say enough good things about this company. My daughter is in a pre-med program at USC (LA) and needed a tutor to help prepare her for the science (math base) courses. This was critical because she was an English major with hardly any math background. The tutors (Dwayne and then Courtney) were math genius's. She ended up choosing Courtney long-term. Courtney explain the math In a way that made it seem easy (although math is my daughter's weakness). Before that, my daughter struggling. If you or your child are struggling in math), I HIGHLY recommend Varsity tutors. Would have given them a 6 star if I could have. I hate writing reviews but couldn't resist expressing my appreciation for this company. read more
