Visited on a Friday at 4pm (day before the first game of the season) and it was busy but tables were still available. I got the El Capitan burger and it was DELICIOUS. My husband got the Giovanni sandwich and it was delicious too. Highly recommend getting a side of the jalopeno ranch which we ate with the fries and onion rings. read more

Located across from the football stadium, we came in for a late lunch. It took a while for our server to come by and it wasn't crazy busy, she would forget waters, silverware, etc. Food wise we ordered two steaks, one rare and one medium, a chicken wrap and a chicken crunch wrap. Their menu is really varied and a lot of things looked great. We also started with the pickle chips and the buffalo egg rolls which we loved. They also give you pretzels for the table. They have fish bowls here but the liquor drinks are pretty watered down so beers more bang for your buck. The wrap was great, I loved the smoked cheddar and the sidle pickle was great. Popped in to this place for lunch after being recommended by some locals. It's right across of the WVU stadium and other businesses. Lots of WV memorabilia on its walls throughout the entire restaurant and features the major sports and athletes. Very cool. Staff was very friendly and readily answered a couple questions on their food offerings which is quite extensive. Ordered a turkey panini sandwich and it comes with choice of fries or chips so I went with the chips. The sandwich was huge and was able to finish one half of it along with the chips and refillable fountain drinks. The bang bang shrimp tacos are an absolute must try. They are delicious. You get three tacos and chips but can also add fries or onion rings for an up charge. I also ate the turkey club and it is was also delicious. The turkey is fried and not cold. The bread if also toasted with lettuce and tomato as well as bacon. The rosemary mayo that comes on it is good but. It over powering. I got the fries and they were the shoe string fries and were crispy. I didn't give 5 stars just because of the service. I liked the varsity club. Convenient location near the Marriott Residence Inn a quick walk away, as well as the hospital. Good beer selection and bar food in a comfortable nicely appointed space. The service was very friendly, and the price is quite reasonable - which seems to draw a continuous crowd of locals. Parking can be a little bit tight, especially if you're driving a big pick up truck. I would definitely go back as I travel through Morgantown. read more

It's a shame, just moved back to Morgantown and really used to like this place. Beer was good, but all our food was extra salty. I ordered the buffalo sandwich, but it was just "meh". My husband ordered the fish tacos and they just tasted off, so he ordered the hot dogs instead, which were decent, but just not as good as in the past. The Varsity Club is on my short list of places to grab a quick bite and watch a game. The place: The VC is owned by a former WVU Mountaineer. This much is apparent, if you have been inside and looked around. Even ignoring the fact that Milan Puskar Stadium is across the street, this place has more WVU swag than the Book Exchange and Bobby Huggins' junk drawer combined. Every once in awhile, i'll discover something new and interesting hanging around. The food: Like many individually-owned restaurants, the VC has been known to experiment with its menu options. I once sat down and read a 16 page menu - that thing should have had a table of contents. As they figured out which food was the best, they have pared down their menu. The typical bar offerings are there - wings, burgers, sandwiches, nachos, and beer. One of the great things about the VC is their not-so-typical offerings. One can get buffalo meat burgers, alligator tails, and stuffed pepperoni rolls (a pepperoni roll is a sui generis culinary offering that inspires near religious fanaticism). The variety is the main reason my friends and I all frequent this place. I'm a non-drinker (and semi-permanent DD), but I have been told that the beer selection here is one of the most varied in town. I'm not sure how they accommodate food allergies. The service: I have looked over most of the one-star reviews of this place, left by yelpers who have all of 1 or 2 reviews under their belt, and i'm a bit skeptical. I haven't had a bad experience here. My guess with most of the negative reviews (IMHO) is that somebody came in acting like a jerk, and got treated like one in return. Don't be one of those people, and you won't be treated like one. I can't speak for WVU gamedays, because only visitors or amnesiac/masochistic townies try to eat out on Saturdays in the fall. My advise to you would be to go early, and expect to wait. It's going to be like that pretty much anywhere you go. All in all, I recommend this place wholeheartedly. read more

There is so much that can be said about the Varsity Club. It is hard to figure out exactly where to start. This place is through and through a West Virginia University restaurant. It is located just across the street from Milan Puskar football stadium, and a short distance away from the WVU Coliseum - so in short, it is situated in the athletic heart of the city. This is apparent in the dizzying array of decorations found all over the walls - historical photographs of WVU football teams, autographed memorabilia, and large tvs showing ESPN and the like. That being said, it does not really fall into the category of a sports bar in the same way as Buffalo Wild Wings and other big chains. Varsity Club is a local business, so it definitely gives the patron an intimate insight into the city of Morgantown. The staff is great, although they can at times be a little slow. This is to be expected though, since I have never been to the Varsity Club without it being packed. They have a great selection of beers. The draft supply is nothing to write home about - standard bud light, coors and the like. However, their bottled selection is beyond reproach. Anchor Steam, Dogfish Head, Sam Adams (which I believe is also on tap). The food is STELLAR. This is the sort of place where you eat, and then you just want to go home and take a nap for about 5 hours and never. eat. again. It is reasonably priced as well, which is never a bad thing. I give it four stars for a completely arbitrary reason. Morgantown is roughly split between the Downtown neighborhoods and the Evansdale areas. The Varsity Club is in the latter. I would define myself as a Downtowner, and just have a personal bias. Few things in Evansdale are as good as downtown, but that is just my completely subjective, unfounded opinion. read more

This is your standard college-town dive. Came in with some WVU alums on a recruiting trip, and this was one of the places they frequented (and still frequent when in Morgantown). Great friendly service, prompt and easy ordering, and it seemed like everyone was having a great time watching the games. The food is your standard bar fare, with the specific WV twist of the pepperoni rolls and some other items. Overall, good food. The wings are pretty nice as well. I like the size of the beers in the huge glasses, but I'm not such a fan of the fact that they're heavy margarita glasses. Would have preferred huge mugs or something, but whatever, it's the character of VC, so it won't change - which is fine by me. I'll start with the positives. The wings were good - overpriced but good. The bartender was very pleasant and good at her job. The happy hour price for a microbrew is $5.75. Are you kidding me? Outrageous. Who drinks here? In addition to the wings, we ordered fried oysters with fries - $12. There were 5 oysters the size of the end of my thumb and a handful of fried chunks of breading presumably instead of more oysters. The fries were soggy and cold. The bartender promptly brought us more fries when we politely informed her. The second order of fries weren't fresh, were just as soggy as the previous order, and just above room temperature. Revisited the VC last week, hadn't been there in over a year, mainly because of the service. It hasn't changed, only two servers at lunch time and one of them were doubling as the bartender. I ordered the mini sliders which were raw in the middle. Couldn't send them back, it took way to long to get them in the first place.
