Once a Reliable Clinic--Now Deeply Disappointing…read more I've been taking my pets to Winterfield for well over a decade--likely since around 2008, when I first adopted my dog. For many years, I was satisfied with the care they provided. But recently, the level of service and professionalism has sharply declined. I'm left wondering what changed. Over the years, I've trusted them with a wide variety of animals--dogs, cats, sugar gliders, ferrets. I even once asked if they could see my Serama chickens, only to be laughed at over the phone. I'm not sure who they think is eating Seramas, but many people keep chickens as pets. For a veterinary clinic, that response was surprisingly dismissive. I expected more understanding and respect from professionals in animal care. I overlooked several concerning incidents in the past, but the growing pattern of questionable practices has become hard to ignore. A few examples: I was charged nearly $300 for a single antibiotic shot--without any prior disclosure. A simple heads-up would've been appreciated. I received a $20 bill for trimming a cat's rear fur--something that took five seconds and seemed more like a gesture of kindness than a billable service. A sugar glider died following a hernia repair. Basic supplies like needles, tubing, and saline were marked up 10-20 times their cost. I've repeatedly been upsold on tests that provided no real value to my pets' health. In my experience, unless a treatment involves something direct and tangible --like antibiotics or fluids--it rarely seems to make much of a difference. Once your pet is placed on a medication regimen, it feels like you're trapped in a cycle of ongoing costs, with little flexibility or empathy. I even took in a 19-year-old stray cat I found dying in the street--an act that came with significant financial responsibility. When I had to delay a follow-up due to a temporary lack of funds as I told them, I was charged a $20 no-show fee. It wasn't the cost that bothered me, but the lack of grace--especially after years of loyalty and thousands of dollars spent. I had also referred my father, who spent around $1,000, and I paid another $3,000 toward that same rescued cat--every cent paid in full. What stung most was the cold, scripted response. "Heather" speaks of "supporting you and your pet," over and over yet they refuse to release medical records until a measly $20 fee was paid, or tide your meds over for a few weeks. No exception. No empathy. No sense of loyalty. You'd think a long-time client in good standing might be offered a little understanding--maybe even a courtesy bag of fluids to tide the cat over, or a simple "don't worry about the fee this time." Instead, it was rigid policy over people, and cash over compassion. Winterfield may still be acceptable for routine visits. But if you're looking for transparency, understanding, or basic respect for your loyalty, I'd recommend going elsewhere. To them, your pet is a profit center. And when the money slows down, their compassion disappears, regardless of how long you've been with them.

When we had to say good-bye to our 14.5 year old dog they were fabulous while we lost it. They follow up after every visit and only want to make sure your pet is healthy and cared for. I highly recommend Centralia Animal Hospital. My only caution is that on weekends and evenings they are busy and you may have to wait like at a normal doctor's office. I had seen the negative postings about the staff on Google, but I had never experienced it first-hand until last week. Whomever they have put at their front desk is one of the most rude, pig-headed, unprofessional individuals I've ever had the misfortune of speaking with. I called earlier last week to try to get a check up for a cat I was fostering. We thought she might be in heat, so I had a pretty long conversation with the receptionist about not getting her spayed immediately but still wanting to get her checked out so I could introduce her to my other cats. I was told that they could see us that Thursday at 4:45pm. I told them that I couldn't bring the cat in, but my son would be able to make the appointment. Because I'd only given my name when they first answered the phone, I even said before I hung up, "so we will see you on Thursday at 4:45, right?" That Thursday my son took the cat to Brook Run and was told there was no appointment on the books. When I called to try to get it straightened out, the receptionist told me that we had not made an appointment! If we had, then we'd "be in the system". I explained that our family uses Brook Run but this was a new foster, so she wouldn't be in the system. Her response to that was they "always" put the animals in the system when they make the appointment. Well obviously, they DON'T always put them in the system because someone screwed up. They didn't make any effort to fit us in and acted like we were trying to scam them with a walk in. There was no apology. The only thing they did offer was to make another appointment for next Wednesday. (I wanted to point out that we already had an appointment, but they wouldn't see us!) I was so furious by the front desk's presumptuous nasty attitude that I declined and hung up. Part of me wanted to give them another chance because Dr. Z has been such a great vet, but how do I know that this won't happen again? It was an inconvenience for my son, but he was willing to let it slide. (He took off from work early.) All they had to do was apologize for the mistake. Even if they couldn't fit us in, I would have been ticked off but not so angry that I'd go elsewhere. Instead, they implied that we were being nefarious and somehow tried to skirt the system. Why on earth would anyone subject themselves to that kind of dismissive and disrespectful treatment again? Totally infuriating!!!

I've also heard of vets charging a "visit fee" in addition to the care/shots, but they don't do that here. All in all, I highly recommend this place as they've really surprised me with how cheap their services are for good quality service. Our puppy's shots are $40 for multiple shots in one!

Importantly, my cat and I spent the wait together in an exam room - much better for both of us than having the cat removed to a back room. Plus, the chairs are cushioned, unlike other vet rooms. These small things can mean a lot when pet and owner face a stressful situation. Bottom line: The care provided by the team at UrgentVet brought my cat back to health. I strongly do not recommend this clinic and would give zero stars if I could…read more My boyfriend brought my girl in for an infected cyst on her shoulder, accompanied by lethargy and a fever. Instead of addressing the clear infection, the vet, Dr. Burke, tried to diagnose her with gastroenteritis--despite the fact that she had no vomiting or diarrhea to suggest that. I can only assume this assumption was made based on her breed (Great Dane), which is completely inappropriate. We approved necessary bloodwork, which came back fine, but they still failed to address the actual issue. They prescribed antibiotics and sent her home without even cleaning the infected site nor offering pain management. She left the clinic still covered in dried blood and pus. To make matters worse, her records were filled with errors and inaccurate information. Having previously worked in a veterinary office myself, I know how records should be documented, and these made no sense. When I called to request corrections, the response I received was dismissive at best. Edit / Update: My girl has since been seen by her regular vet, who discovered multiple pockets of infection that developed because the original wound was never properly cleaned or clipped. What began as a small, treatable infection has now spread across her entire shoulder. She has been in pain, and the stress this has caused me has been overwhelming. All of this could have been avoided had Dr. Burke taken the time to actually listen to our concerns and properly examine her, rather than jumping to an unrelated and irrelevant diagnosis. At her regular vet, she was immediately cleaned up and properly treated, which revealed the true severity of the infection. I've attached pictures--some from UrgentVet and some from her regular vet--so you can see the difference in care for yourself.

The next morning, I received an email for a prescription cat food before the email with the test results, which were not good and my cat had deteriorated immensely since their visit. I called and left a message for the vet to call me. She did not call until the next morning, at which time I informed her we had to put our cat down. (We were fortunate enough to find an at home vet who was able to come out the same afternoon). I was so disappointed with the lack of response from the Vet on an animal who was obviously very sick. The only follow up since that time has been 2 emails reminding me my prescription was still ready to order. I have asked them twice now to take me off the mailing list. Hopefully , we will not receive other reminders for this prescription.
