I can't say it's a great bargain store, the range of goods isn't spectacular, but it's thorough - the store isn't particularly big, but there is plenty of convenient parking close to it as it's down the far end of the shopping centre itself. I've been there quite a few times - it's fairly close to home at a centre the family and I frequent, and it's a good fallback when the kids are desperate to burn some pocket money, or you have those everyday needs that you can save some money by using a bargain stores products.

I frequent quite a few bargain stores, you hafta love somewhere you can wander around and come out with a handful of junk you almost need in return for the handful of loose change you had in your pocket at the time - the really nice thing about Spend-A-Penny is that you'll sometimes find stuff that you DO need, you just didn't know about. Case in point, it was here I found one of the most useful objects I have in my kitchen - a shot glass with graduated measurements all around the sides, for ml's, teaspoons, tablespoons, ounces, etc - it is absolutely invaluable when cooking, and it cost me two bucks... *win* They also showed some initiative over the Christmas period, having signs up to advise people they were open from 9am-12pm on Christmas day. I don't know how that went for them, but I did make a mental note in case I needed a tray for the webber or any other potentially disasterous situation popped up on the day. Could also have been handy for someone who REALLY likes leaving the Christmas shopping till the last minute. :)

For one two full sized supermarkets (Coles and Woolworths) within metres of each other. As well as- * A chemist/pharmacy. * A fruit and veg. * Two cafes- including a Michele's Patisserie. * A sushi bar. * Just Cuts. * Bendigo Bank. * A few clothes shops- including a Noni B and Millers. * A health foods shop. * A nail tech. * A masseuse. * A gift shop. * A bottle-o. (Hidden away down by Woolies) * An optometrist. * The Reject Shop. * An Indian restaurant. (Outside) * Jets gym. (Outside) And yet there's still a few vacant spaces for other things to eventually move in. I think a planned newsagent is popping up soon. There's also a RediATM inside, and I'm sure there's another somewhere but I just can't remember where and what. There is a lot of parking, including roof top, underground and to the east side of the building. Each have their individual access points to the inside. There's also a lift which takes you to each level, and travellators (not escalators) so also being very easy for disability access. Next door outside is also the Newton Post Office, a Chinese restaurant, another gym, and another discount variety store. So simply said this convenient corner in Newton/Rostrevor is one of the greatest establishments in the area for basically everything!! And also if you do find yourself spending too much time here at any one point, there are two public toilets in the building. (One by Coles and one near the travellators on the main level).

Quick Bargains on Payneham Road is a mildly up-market version of a Cheap as Chips style store. Don't get too excited though, it is still utter junk but it's better than the random 'fall apart in 23 seconds' rubbish you would usually find at these stores! They have a selection of shades that would make Elton John a stupidly happy individual, and it kept me busy for quite a while as well! Although there is a lot of gear that you would probably never use, occasionally you can find just the thing you need which you may have had to fork out major coin for if it was from a 'normal' specialty shop. I thought the selection of gift boxes was very good and really cheap. I hate wrapping presents so this is a great option, and it actually looks mildly classy.....that's me, classy from head to toe!

Quick Bargains! is, as the name suggests, one of those shops that sell a lot of random things at…read morepretty good prices. It's good for cheap kitchen items such as cutlery, baking ware, measuring pots or mugs. Be aware though that you won't get any great designs or high quality material for a few bucks. Apart from that, they stock Christmas stuff (at the moment), cards, some useful utensils such as tape, rope or scissors. Stationary is also part of their selection and then really just very random things like sunglasses or cardboard boxes to put things in. If you ever get to Glynde Plaza, it's worth having a quick browse because you might find something you'll need. (A baking tray in my case)

If you want to be quick and effective, I suggest arriving just after trading starts in the morning. It's pleasant to be welcomed at the entrance by a staff member, and the customer service is excellent, given the significant challenges they regularly face. I think the products are good if you know what to search for; however, some items fall short, like finding an umbrella or a reliable backpack. But for socks, underwear, and basic clothing, it definitely gets my approval.

I wouldn't blame them if they get bored since the technology is pushing the employees to the side. Manager probably likes the idea of people shop lifting. Only Lowered star rating for having a pay point in the middle of the shop, encouraging employees to double check people at the door, which is not easier to prove that extra things aren't in the piled high trolley. So move the pay point to the front, or at least be more realistic, and use that extra space better than the yellow pages is right now.

The store itself is quite small but is jam packed with anything and everything you could ever need. Most impressive is their range of party accessories including plates and cutlery, streamers, napkins, balloons and plastic glassware. There is a huge variety of colours and lots of themed sets featuring popular cartoon characters which are perfect for children's parties. They also have a great selection of costumes and dress up accessories, although most appear to be in children's sizes. This would be, however, a great place to go if you have a dress up party and need something quick and cheap. The staff are lovely and I have overheard them on the phone going through the process of ordering an item in for a customer which shows dedicated customer service skills and is highly commendable.

The standout for me here is the 'junk' jewelery - having two young daughters it's an absolute given that we can drop in there for a celebratory treat for a good report card or performance at school, or for bribes to help get the chores done - there's always something new in the shiny sparkly trinkets and I prefer to spend on treats like that than a bagful of sugar and preservatives.

The Firle Plaza has all the main necessities, a Coles, Kmart, fruit and veg shop, and a newsagents with a post office inside it. There is also a great hairdresser, a bargain shop and the most important establishment of all, a Liquorland! With a bakery/coffee shop as well it has everything you need to do your shopping and then put your feet up for a little rest. The only bad thing I would say about it is the parking is SHOCKING. Having been in the car park A LOT I have witnessed so many minor crashes from people just not looking before they pull out and because of the small size of the aisles between cars. My tip is to park on the Glynburn Rd side and walk the extra 100m, it will totally be worth it to save your car from someone backing into it. And try and exit the car park onto Glynburn Rd too, you don't need to pull out into the main pathway of traffic where a lot of people pull out without even looking. My horn has had a working out since spending a lot of time in that car park.

Why?…read moreWell, probably not because it is 'the' hotspot to hang out in the Eastern suburbs but because it's close to where I live and really has all the shops you would have to frequent for your weekly household needs. There's one massive Cole's that seems to be open all the time (it closes at 9pm during the week and reopens at 12am, for all those of you who work late or just fancy late night grocery shopping). Liquorland, K-mart, a bakery, Commonwealth bank and a newsagents have also found their homes at Firle. There is heaps of parking and it is easily accessible, with 3 entrances, from Glynburn Road. It is also walking distance to Oporto and Dominos (just opposite the road) and has a KFC, a Thai restaurant and a laundrette to its left-hand side. Next to Firle, on the right, is a hairdresser, a Priceline, a video rental store, Caffe Primo, Chicken Coop, a gym and an Indian grocery store. If it's not in Firle Plaza, it's right next to it. Amazing! Note that opening times vary according to each different shop but most are open till 9.

This is my local though, so I guess I have a bit of an affinity for the place that offers me fuel, friendly staff, coffee, and life support when I find we're out of bread, cat food, milk, or chocolate biscuits just after 9.30pm. The sign proudly proclaims that they never close - not quite true, they did close for a bit whilst doing major renovations, including putting in one of those shiny new car washes - and a dog wash, too. They're not the cheapest fuel in town, often a bit late to drop the price per litre and being good at pushing it up, but that's only a couple of cents per litre mostly - running my V8 across town to someone with discount fuel kinda negates the savings. The one thing that really irks me with petrol stations, signs saying the pumps are out of order when the fuel's cheap, I've never seen here. The other thing I absolutely love the BP at Athelstone for is their tyre gauge and pumping station - it's always been accurate, and the nozzle works - so many must see so much traffic it's just natural that the fittings suffer from wear and tear. This is also the last fuel you'll get on your way out on Gorge Road - or the first you'll find coming back in. Many years ago, after a run in the hills, I pretty much rolled in to the pump on vapours, before even knowing Athelstone existed. There's oddly good memories associated in getting fuel exactly when you're about to run out. Oh, yeah, the other reason these guys rock... C Coffee - now, you can get some mediocre C Coffee at times, I remember one place close to somewhere I worked had one person who managed to consistently make bad coffee - somehow he'd manage to make the coffee taste burnt, don't know if it was the milk, or the coffee itself, but a latte was punishment... these guys haven't made me a bad cup yet.

Despite all those perks, a surprising amount of newsagents don't seem to be happy in doing what they do - luckily this isn't one of those places - the owner here really seems to enjoy the profession, always has a smile and a nod for a local, and carries a great range of products. Lotto, a staple of newsagencies these days, is handled really well - and those big days when there's a multi million dollar jackpot you'll usually find an extra staff member or two to make sure everyone is served efficiently. Good little shop, plenty of stock, a good range of magazines, stationery & other products - AND a happy owner - this is the kind of store I'll support just to keep places like this in the community.
