Okay, I may be a bit dramatic about this but I am just sick and tired of whoever I ask, no-one knows how to fix my cracked mobile screen. This is simply what happened: 1. While running, I dropped my phone and upon impact with the ground, cracked the screen. 2. Luckily, I had a friend that knew you so I took it in for repair. 3. You said it Android mobiles were too complicated and you weren't able to do anything for me. 4. You said you don't know which screen to pick to replace this screen. 5. I was told to try my original phone shop, as they would know how to repair it better than you. Better to be honest, than to promote your own business, right? 6. Vodafone was more than happy to repair my phone screen for AUS $250 upfront. Are you joking?! Gimme my phone back. I'll live with the cracked screen for the next 12 months. Thumbs down.

I was pretty disappointed, annoyed and worried that I'd have to deal with a dodgy phone repairer. The kind who would take weeks to get my phone back to me citing excuses like 'the parts haven't come in yet' when I know the truth is 'I've been watching cat videos on youtube for the past two weeks and haven't got around to fixing your pathetic phone'. Luckily a friend put me on to the folks at this fast and effective repairer, Psytech. They're based out of a second storey suite on Hindley Street, and the place looks a little odd. There's a waiting room with MC Escher paintings on the wall and a bloke who is presumably a massive fan of Doctor Who behind the desk. However, they're kind and patient about explaining what needs to be done to fix your phone. They gave me a free quote, my phone came back within a week, and even though electronic repairs can be notoriously expensive, I didn't feel like they were pulling my fillings to line their pockets. All in all, a great little business better than the big boys.

Occasionally though, even when you're a Mac geek things go wrong and you need to visit the even geekier Mac addicts. That's when the guys from Mac Alert come in handy. They know their Macs and their not frightened to use their knowledge. Mac Alert have recently moved into new premises on South Road at Edwardstown and they're now opposite the Avoca Hotel. Business must be going well for these guys because they have significantly upsized their shop. I have my eye on a 27" iMac in Mac Alert store at the moment. I think they understand that people like me come in a few times before they actually make a purchase. At least I hope they do, if not I apologise for visiting your shop so often.

My partner and I own two Crumpler bags, camera case and camera strap. So, my review will be from a customer point of view. In particular, I will focus this review on my recent purchase, the Dry Red No 6. Or otherwise known as the Rolls Royce of the Crumpler bags (as I am told). My partner introduced me to Crumpler many years ago with a story about its inception/creation. I was intrigued to find out that Crumpler was founded by fellas wanting to create a bag strong enough to carry a slab of beer when riding on the way home. They experimented with many techniques and even got advice from a parachute maker. After creating it, this bag made it's way around while working as a messenger/courier. It immediately caught the attention of other Couriers. The business was then founded. I love supporting Australian made products and also a sucker for a good story behind a company. I was sold when I heard that story and also when they told me that all of their products have a lifetime warranty. That is confidence in their product and also calls for a higher price. The materials used on my Dry Red No 6 are quality. Heavy duty zips, thick material, buckles, great padding and it looks snazzy with contrasting colours from black to red. The first pocket is decked out with compartments for all sorts of stationary goods. The main compartment is very roomy and well padded to protect your belongings. You will find a zip to expand the main compartment, which is great if you are traveling and need just a little more space. My favourite part of this bag is the laptop sleeve. Most bags you will find the laptop sleeve in the main compartment. But no, Crumpler are always being innovative and creative about solving problems. They have constructed the sleeve at the back of the pack with a zip on the side. This means you do not need to go into the main compartment to get it out. This is so handy when you are travelling through customs and need to get your laptop out quick at the security gate. I don't want to have to fumble around to get my laptop out of my bag. It is like, bam there it is! This bag is so comfortable as well. I walk around a lot and travel a bit. So, the padding on the shoulder straps and back are perfect for long hauls. Best of all, I know that if I have any problems, Crumpler will fix them without hesitation. I am also told they may give you a loan bag if they have one available. How good is that?!

I guess they spend a great deal of money on advertising because I seem to be carrying a lot of information about Crumpler bags, yet I don't even own one to carry my actual stuff in! I have read about them doing a sort of endurance test on their new bags involving opening and closing the zip 500 times and kicking it around a room for fun, attaching wires to its fingertips and setting dogs onto it, that they call 'The Torture Test' which I find really inappropriate for some reason. Possibly because bags I always associate with travel, and travel these days is fraught with dangers depending on where you are heading - advertising agencies take note of my stream of association here - and the idea of carrying something that has been tortured, even if in jest, even if in trendy publicist's speak... is kind of off putting. Yes, I'm being silly, sort of. I don't think they include dogs and wire in 'The Torture Test' but I do feel a bit put off by this sort of advertising-speak. The actual store and the products themselves seem a bit pricey, and as colourful as they are, sometimes it is the cost of the object that dictates my interest. A toiletries bag doesn't need to set you back fifty bucks. You can get one at Target for about ten dollars. However some of the designs and colour combinations are crucially attractive, and I guess that's the thing I do sometimes lust after. If I'm going to own a status symbol, and let's face it. that's the level they are pitched at, it may as well be one that does look worth pinching because there could be all sorts of fancy technology inside like a laptop, a blueberry a hand held video cam or even a pair of Calvin's and Nike's... so.... you go figure. I'm not against the bags themselves, I may be against the people who write their speeches; it could be a little too surreal to work out, but don't leave it unattended because someone like me may find it suddenly very attractive.

This is also a shop for girls, if you happen to like these things, and have lots of gadgets that take a difficult kind of battery. However, I find that if I know what I'm looking for, it's much cheaper to nip into a Jaycar to buy batteries. I think of this place as more of a gifts and gadgets shop.

They have always provided great service and been really helpful, fulfilling all our needs with either the same or something comparable that will do the same job. We've even gone in with batteries for really old bikes and scooters and they have always been able to assist. They do in most instances need to order in the specialty battery you may require but they seem to be able to get anything you could possibly need in only a few days. And they will usually call you when the item arrives at the store if you want. They do also provide a 24hr roadside assistance service, for this please call 13 17 60 anytime instead of the store number listed under this business.

Basically most Harvey Norman stores are set up the same. Huge entrances to the furniture department. Usually entrances are in the middle of lounges, if you go one way you will ge tmore furniture then curve round to televisions and the likes, go the other way and get beds and bedding. I have managed to grab some fantastic bargains on some great pillows here actually. Heaps better quality than at department stores and they lasted heaps longer. The Electrical and Computers are usually in a separate section at the rear or one side of the store, with electrical left of the spearate entrance to this area and computer, mobiles phones, camera's, PC software, etc to the right of the registers. I have never purchased nay major electrical items from this store but have bought some really good computer equipment here. Including a fantastic Acer laptop. It was already out so cheap and had a cah back offer making it even cheaper in the end. I have always received good service here and been given some great advice from people who obviously know their products. Getting the service is the hardest part - they are usually really busy, more so in computers and electrical departments, and it may take a little wait before someone is available to help you. However once you have someone their service is usually very good, I have never had an issue with a staff member at any Harvey Norman store.

But I find that you're paying for it when you buy stuff here. That's why they bitch and moan about online shopping. You'll get exactly the same thing and pay less than half the cost in many situations. I haven't ever bought furniture at Hardly Normal's, just because if I'm paying that much, it'll be from a premium store, not this place, or any of the others. I do feel a bit sorry for those that have to buy their computers here. Seriously, go to MSY, buy the parts, and learn to do it yourself. You'll end up with a new skill, a computer that costs literally half the price (or less), and everyone will tell you you're awesome. Which is what I can't tell this place.
