This bake shop is located in the downtown Scottsboro area. I've wanted to try it when around for work but it usually closes before I can get by; when I came to visit the Scottsboro Boys Museum, however, I was early enough to stop in and nab some treats. It's cute from the outside and clean albeit a little dated on the inside. Pastries are stored in a glass case to the left as you enter. I was somewhat surprised to see that there are full meal options to order as well. It was empty when I walked in so I'm not sure if people eat lunch here or not. I was just in for the pastries! A bell rang softly when I entered and someone emerged from the back to help me. She was nice enough and grabbed my goodies for me from the case. The selection was a little limited but it was after lunch so I bet most stuff goes in the morning. They did have a goodly number of donuts but I'm not a huge donut person. I got an orange roll and a sticky bun/pecan roll. I took them home to share with my husband later. The sticky bun was the better of the two items, with toasty nuts and a good amount of cinnamon. The orange roll suffered from the slightly medicinal taste orange flavoring often has but it was decent. Both pastries were a teeny bit on the dry side, but not offensive. I'd give the orange roll a 3/5 and the sticky bun a 4/5, so overall closer to a 3.5. Worth a try if you're craving a treat; I'm glad my curiosity has been sated! read more

There is something comfy about a small town bakery that just makes you smile and Variety Bake Shop is one of those places. Now, don't get me wrong, small town doesn't mean small selection. They have almost anything you could want, but our go to items start with the sausage rolls (we buy them by the dozen) and wrap up with the donuts. They make everything themselves which means you get it while it's fresh or you find that it's gone. And their people are so friendly. As new customers they were super patient and walked us through the ins and outs of what they had, when they typically ran out of things, and even helped us find our way around the town square. Buyers Beware!!! Yesterday we had teacher appreciation/alumni and senior night. I ordered a sheet cake, oversized cupcake and cookies 2 weeks ago. I show up to the bakery to pick up our order at noon and I'm told it's not ready yet it will be about an hour and they will deliver it for the inconvenience. I explained the games started at 4:00 so we had to have them by 3:00. I was assured it would be! They never showed up! We had approximately 150 people there and no cake! Even worse the owner would not answer my phone calls or text messages. I have never blasted a business but there's NEVER any excuse to literally ghost your customers! read more

Been going here for years. New owners came a while back and the food changed a little but was still good. But today was my turning point and I won't be back. First of all there is no prices posted anywhere in the store and to my surprise a dozen cream filled donuts is now $33.00! They are good but that's excessive. Second we tried the chicken biscuit and the sausage biscuit. They were in a warmer and no telling for how long. The biscuits were extremely stale and the chicken finger was extremely dry and disgusting. I then got sick immediately after eating it. With the high prices and declining food quality I will no longer be coming here or recommending it to anyone as I have in the past. It used to be worth the 45 minute drive from Huntsville but not anymore. read more

I just recently started visiting Variety Bake Shop. I stopped in the other day to pick up a dozen donuts for the nurses up at the hospital. They couldn't stop raving about how amazing those donuts were!! They especially liked the apple filled donut!! They said it tastes just like apple pie!! The best donuts in town, possibly in the whole state. With the popularity of coffee shops and bakeries on the rise over the last several years, I am surprised to find myself the first person to review this fantastic place. Variety is a long-standing bakery and is by far the best kept secret in Scottsboro. First of all, they don't skimp. The donuts are all handmade daily, and huge when compared to either of the mainstream companies like Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme. I have always considered KK to be the better of those 2, but Variety has surpassed them both on all fronts. Any filled donut you purchase is --FILLED-- as it should be, with copious amounts of whatever your poison may be. It would seem that the mainstream franchises have lost sight of the correct way to sell a filled pastry. Simply dabbing them with a q-tip covered in jelly is their preferred method. As the name suggests, Variety offers many wonderful pastries and I recommend the "Apple Fritter" and "Creme Filled Donut". Also, check out the Sausage Rolls if you feel up for a southern style breakfast. Keep in mind they are only open Tuesday - Saturday. They open very early and close at 2:30PM. Needed some pastries for a meeting. Pulled in front of this bakery at 2:00 pm. "Closed" sign is on the door, when I noticed store hours end at 2. The lady running the store was inside and just stared at me. If this was my business, I'd have gotten another sale from a guy in a suit driving a new car. Anytime we're in the area someone I work with stops here for doughnuts. A few years ago we discovered their "sausage balls". Their sausage balls aren't what you would typically think of when you think sausage ball. Its a homemade biscuit dough wrapped around sausage then baked. Not only is the biscuit recipe good but the sausage cooks inside the dough and adds more flavor. Add a squirt of mustard and you have a phenomenal, simple, highly addictive little treat. My co-workers rave over the donuts. The cream filled which one individual described as an entire vanilla snack pack inside of a doughnut is a crowd fav. I'm told all of their doughnuts are exceptional. They have limited hours and often run out of a considerable number of their items early due to demand. The place closes at 2. If you don't go first thing in the morning you likely wont get the little breakfast sausage biscuit tacos they call sausage balls.
