This has been around for almost 40 years and unfortunately they have chosen to take advantage of the new economic climate and start to gouge their customers since Covid. I brought in two button down shirts to be dry cleaned and cost is $12.75 Each and a Light weight zip up jacket and that was $24. I paid for this when dropping this off and realized in the car they did not state paid so made sure to add a note to myself. I picked it up today and they tried to double charge me. I told him it was paid and he did not believe me. I then showed it was paid on my Apple Wallet account. Fortunately I did not pay via cash or would have been in trouble. The pricing is way out of line and very unorganized that they try to double charge you. This will be my last time going to Varella. read more

My husbands clothes always get well cleaned and serviced there. We love it and the pricing isn't too high, it not a steal, but it's not bad.

I had a new dress altered. One hem is curvy not straight. One hem was ok. I showed him at pickup And the owner said the alteration lady 'cant handle it '. I asked if if i am not happy with the alteration she cant re-fix it? He said no. I wont go here again! Be ware if you have a clothing you like do not risk if. At the least he should offer to let the lady look at it again for me. It should be redone. It is ridiculous the way it is handled. read more

I've been taking my suits here for over a year now. Over the past couple of months, I've attended a lot of outdoor weddings, so my dry cleaning schedule became more frequent. Today I decided to check in on yelp and check out the reviews. I'm disappointed in what I saw. Never once did I have a bad experience. The nice older lady in the store always greets me and is always positive. We always have a conversation about my whereabouts and special occasions for my suits. She always gives me tips on how to pack my suits when I travel. And when I get my suits back, they return in better condition from when I drop it off. This lady is A1. In terms of pricing, I don't know what's "expensive" and honestly don't care about the costs. My work pays for it. I do expect to pay between 20-25 for a jacket and slacks. I'll try to update this review with an exact price. I can't quite connect why this place has so many reviews, but I trust her with all my suits, and she does a damn good job. read more

This is our go-to cleaners for the past seven years. Suits, dress shirts, wool sweaters, our best blankets and bedding. This business does a great job. The owners have a warm attitude and have gone the extra mile to get stains out. We've also used their seamstress to repair and upgrade military uniforms. They are reliable and will rush an item for a special event turn around. I've just recommended this business to two friends in the area. I'm so bummed i took my BRAND NEW skirt that was handmade for the first cleaning to their business. My skirt was 100% RUINED - 100%. I can't say that enough. It went in as a taffeta skirt and came out a RAG!! The owners were saying it was MY fault - WAIT WHAT??? I give you a brand new skirt, and it's MY fault that you hand me a rag back. SEE THE PICTURES!!!! And here's the kicker - they claim, "...they didn't do anything wrong and that my skirt was OLD." HA!!!! They proceeded to tell me I should starch it. I realize this is Walnut Creek and as close to Nirvana as suburbs go, but I got the cops called on me for complaining about a bleach stain...really. During a morning meeting it was pointed out to me that I had an unmistakable bleach stain down my sleeve. It was suggested that I had gotten dressed in the dark and that I should not be burdened with tasks such as dressing myself. (I was blessed with powers of concentration, not observation, so it had gone undetected all morning.) I live a bleach free existence. Not out of choice, I have no issues surrounding bleach, it just so happens that my world contains no such chemical. I went back to Varella Cleaners [2857 Ygnacio Valley Rd., Walnut Creek, CA 94598 in the Oak Grove Shopping Center] to complain. I am not super comfortable with confrontation so I did my best to convey a "No problem this happens, just knock some cash off my next bill" attitude. This is what happened. The owners are 5'6" and I am 6'3" dressed business casual (I had a spare shirt in my office). The husband denied having bleach on the premises and said I was lying about the stain's origins, I started in on my bleach free existence and he started to raise his voice. The wife came over and shooed him away and we started talking. I decided he had had a bad day and she seemed reasonable. She said it would be "...no problem we won't charge you for your pick up." (I had clean clothes there ready to be picked up) "Trust is the most important thing to us" So, I capitulated, "Fine, If you are going to fix the problem, I trust you did a great job." Which she turned into: "Well if you trust that we did not do this then why should we fix this problem?" We went around like this four times. It was brilliant- I was trapped in an Escher painting hanging in the Matrix. Husband decided to call the cops and told me so. I had behaved well, no threats, ridicule, mocking, accusations (past the stain's origin) or carrying on. Promise, Mrs. Posey, my 3rd grade teacher would have been proud. So I called my man's bluff and told him, "I'm not scared of the police, go ahead and call." He did...really. Turns out, I am afraid of the police. I buckled and paid for the dry cleaning they still had and left without incident. I called on my darkest nature to come up with a revenge that would demonstrate my unharnessed rage- I decided that a Yelp comment would do... Not because these owners don't deserve worse but because sunlight is the best detergent. read more

I have been coming here for over 3 years. This family owned business is great. They are very friendly and professional. They greet my children each time we come in to drop off or pick up. They have gone out of the way to accomodate us on several occasions. We mostly do laundry with the occasional dry cleaning and I have not had any problems to date. When a button broke off, the staff quickly fixed it then and there on the spot! They are open 6 days a week (closed Saturday) and have 2 parking spots sectioned off for the early evening. They also do alterations in house as well as same day service. Great Service with a reasonable price! Keep up the good work! read more

I have been going to these guys for about 2 years, and they typically did a good job. I was last there in Novemember, which is when I did about 30 shirts. I was going to wear one of them for the first time since it was cleaned, and it had a huge rip on the wrist. I was upset, because I had only worn it once time, but thought they would be professional enough to take care of my issue. I went by this morning optimistic that they would take care of something that was clearly their fault. The female owner that was there told me there was nothing they could do about it. She said they handle tons of shirts and sometimes they come with rips. I totally understood that, but this was a brand new shirt, only worn one time and it definitely wasnt torn. The toear was so big that the person who cleaned it couldnt have missed it. What made me mad was that they tried to package the shirt as if I wouldnt notice a 7 inch tar. The owner was terrible and I will definitely never take my clothes there again. I left the ripped up shirt with her and told her to keep it. Dry cleaners are NOT supposed to ruin things. p.s. Is there negative stars? "Cleaners?" Lol. I brought my jacket in to have it "cleaned" and when I got it back, all the dirt and stains were exactly the way I brought them in. I brought it to the owner's attention and they argued with me that it was "cleaned" and that the spots can't be removed. I rubbed off some dirt from the jacket to prove it can be removed. Anyways, after 1/2 hour of arguing, I insisted that she recleans it. Picked it up again, and again, it was still dirty. Some stains were removed, but it was still dirty and she caused the collar to be discolored with whatever she used. This was a $150 jacket! It was just dirt so not sure why heavy duty chemicals were Needed. Again, more arguing with her and this time, she refused to re clean it. Unfortunately, I paid before I realized any of this. Again, a wasted 45 minutes. I asked for my money back and she refused. Co-worker said I should've reported them to the news to do an undercover story on them. Wished I did. They were so rude. This place sucks and is expensive. Don't bring your clothes here. You're better off wearing dirty clothes and not pay some rude people to argue with you. I ended up taking my jacket elsewhere for cheaper and they actually cleaned it. Worse place ever! Don't go here!!! read more

I have been a customer for at least 6 years with sometimes less than stellar results, but never anything like this. Today I had a very similar experience to Ben. When I dropped my white slacks off, they were stained (bad day -- coffee and chocolate). The woman co-owner assured me they could clean them. I sent my husband to pick up the dry cleaning and he came back without these slacks. (This is NOT the first time they have failed to return all our cleaning.) I made a special trip to pick up the white slacks and decided to check them before leaving. On inspection, they now have many new stains that weren't there originally. The owner became so angry when I asked if the staining could have been caused by the spot remover. He started yelling at me asking me if I was accusing him of staining my slacks. I tried to explain that the slacks had coffee and chocolate when dropped off, and now had black ink marks. I asked them to try to clean them again. Now that I'm reading some of these reviews. I'm really nervous about picking them up. Maybe they'll be a police officer to greet me, or perhaps a loaded shotgun. I don't hold out much hope for my $400 slacks. read more

The worst place to clean your clothes! I wish I read these reviews before I brought my clothes there. I had the same exact experience as Maria. They melted 4 of the 7 buttons of one my shirts and then argued with me that I should have requested dry cleaning instead of regular laundry They also told me that the buttons were too thick and that's why they melted even though I had no issues with this exact same shirt at other locations. The melted buttons were apparently pressed very hard or perhaps the shirt was left there for a while, I don't know what they did, but the fabric around each melted button was deformed and wrinkled in a circle while the fabric around the intact buttons looked normal. So when I asked them why is that, they were arrogant enough to tell me that this is how they press shirts, which was absurd. When I requested to replace the buttons not only did they refuse to take responsibility but charged me another $7 on top of everything that I had already paid, which was significantly overpriced compared to many other places. read more
