Big and beautiful! My wife and I drove along the lakeshore road and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves…read more The old homes beautiful trees with moss growing in them are very picturesque. We saw the biggest Magnolia Tree I've ever seen in my life! And then there is the very random rhinoceros statue peeking out at you from behind a fence!

It is on the smaller side but filled with interesting information and dedicates a lot of space to the history and artifacts of the Waccamaw Siouan Indian Tribe. The Lake is the largest of the Carolina Bays. The bays are multiple oval-shaped lakes that were likely formed over the last ice age. The Waccamaw Siouan Indian Tribe viewed the lake's formation as the result of a meteor that left a deep crater. The Visitor Center explores that theory, as well as others. Lake Waccamaw was a logging town, and cypress trees were used for shingles. The weather-resistant shingles were chosen for George Washington's home in Mt. Vernon. Fifty years after the Lake Waccamaw Dam was built, the state established a state park. It started at 273 acres, but over time, more land was acquired, and the park is now 2,300 acres. The park is considered a hyper-unique ecosystem because the limestone bluff keeps the water clear, and the alkaline conditions support fish and mollusk species found only here, and nowhere else in the world, such as the Waccamaw spike mussel and the Waccamaw darter fish. They have a fossilized skull of a Balaenula whale that swam through the coastal plain millions of years ago. The Lake Waccamaw State Park is home to black bears, bobcats, carnivorous plants, and American alligators. Though the rain kept me inside this time, the park also features several trails and a scenic boardwalk that I look forward to exploring on a sunny day.

This place is awesome. Whether you're a mountain biker, trail runner, or trail walker, this park…read morehas 7 total miles of trails and so many twists and turns and ups and downs, you're surely to get your money's worth...especially since it's free! They don't call this sucker The Hulk for nothin'! You'll see what I mean if you try it out, as you should. It's an awesome trail system. The volunteer mountain biking group that maintains this park/trail system does an unbelievable job on tweaking, perfecting, balancing, and general upkeep of this entire system. It's a ton of work, no doubt, and they shirk no tasks, that's obvious. Thanks so much to that group for all they do here. Seriously. You guys friggin' rock. The trail system seems to have pretty much everything that you might be looking for from tons of hills, jumps, berms, thickly wooded shady areas, a few open stretches to get your sun's rays, and even some tiny wooden bridges to quickly traverse. My favorite time to hit this trail system is a day after a good soaking rain when the trails are just a bit soggy and not too sandy/dusty. There's tons of parking all over, both on the street and in a dedicated lot, there's a porta john for your emergency situations, and even a bike pump and set of community bike tools if you need to tighten this or loosen that. This park also has a couple of heavy duty metal painted green picnic tables in a shaded/covered area that you can escape to from the sun/rain or just sit at to rest your weary legs post workout. It's at those tables that you'll see the map for the entire park. The only suggestion I'd have is that maps be put out on the trails in various spots for the newbs that have a tendency to get lost (which happens frequently in here). There's just soooo many twists and turns and switchbacks that it's easy to get yourself turned around. Me myself, shoot, I got lost the 2nd time I was there. Yes, the trails are well marked in terms of which direction bikers should travel and which direction to go as a runner, but there is only one overall schematic map I've seen on the 3 different trails, so once you're out there, you're basically on your own. If you carry a cellphone, I'd suggest taking a pic of the main trail map before heading in. If you go on a weekend though, you're likely to encounter other people, so even if you do get lost, there's a good chance someone will be nearby that can help you get your bearings and figure out how to get back to the trailhead. The trails do run into one another so it's easy to end up on a trail you weren't planning on hitting. Bring water to drink because you'll likely get really hot during and after killing these trails, but hey, they call it THE HULK for a reason. This sucker is a beast of a system, but so, so, so much fun. I absolutely love running this park because it always gives me a different cardio workout from what I get from road running and is so much more challenging. Plus, I likes me the nature. Overall, you won't see a lot of kids riding mountain bikes here. It seems to be a little too difficult for kids, especially those that are pre-teen. I'd say experienced teen riders would have no surprise problems here at all though. You just don't want to bring your 7 year old that hasn't been riding mountain bikes too long; not that kind of place. Too challenging. And finally, there are snakes in this park. Duh...it's their home...just be aware that there are rattlesnakes and other types and keep your eyes open. They're there, but don't let that keep you from checking this system out. It's not like I see a snake every time I go or anything, it's just, you know, be aware that they are around so keep your eyes open. The posted pics are a great reflection of what some aspects of the trails basically look like if you're wondering.
