Greenfield lake park is such a beautiful place for pictures. We took my daughter here for her junior year prom pics and it was perfect. There were a lot of other people doing the same thing. There is a beautiful bridge that ca. be the best backdrop for any photo session.

I am a huge fan of Greenfield park. I had done multiple half marathons in Wilmington and always ran around the park and decided to go explore the interior. There are tennis courts, playgrounds, a skate park, and boat rentals in the area. They also have plenty of areas with signs wanting about alligators, we only saw one though. They also have a plethora of turtles. We walked around, admiring the trees and foliage and just taking in the scenery. It's normally not too busy which is nice too. Total I believe it's about 5 miles worth of trails around the lake which is really neat too if you need to get in some running or walking. It's also close to downtown!

Beautiful 4 mile loop around the lake. Sadly we didn't see any gators but there was a warning sign! Lots of dogs being walked and bikers but plenty of of space to move around. You can hear traffic from lots of spots along the way but it's still a beautiful place for a daytime walk. Some trash and discarded cans in the wooded areas so I'd avoid at night.

If you are looking to see alligators in their natural habitat this is the place! Walking around the perimeter is not the best location nor the worst, keep your wits as you go. Bad thing is the restrooms are closed so go before you get here.

This review is going to be a good one. Just letting you know ahead of time. Last evening, my wife, son and I finally made it to Greenfield Park for the first time. I know...crazy after living here for 5 years but it's true. It was about 6:45p in the evening and we wanted to take a walk for some basic cardiovascular exercise. My wife suggested taking a small walk at Greenfield Lake. I explained that I've heard it's a decent-sized lake with a chance to spot gators so, yeah, that's a great idea. We arrived with plenty of parking and began our walk, near the parking lot. The Sun was beginning it's descent and the path was calm, with only a dozen or so runners, bikers etc. crossing paths with us. We took in the greenery, searched for the well-known wild gators and just......walked, and we kept walking...and walking until we hit the 1.8 mile checkpoint as darkness began to set in. Beginning to wonder how damn far it was to circle around the lake, my wife pulled out her phone, searched and found it it's a total of 3.9 miles!!! We really didn't think this through at all. Lol. We weren't slow walking but we kept a consistent pace throughout and realized we needed to kick it up a notch if we were to make it back to our Jeep before total darkness. We did just that with our unconditioned legs, ankles and knees not being prepared for a power walk of almost 4 miles in just under an hour and 20 mins, snapping pics and taking it all in along the way. That's a couple in our mid-40's, not accustomed to walking this distance in quick sprints, and our 13 year old son, who was sore but a trooper keeping up with us and our longer strides. Aside from the spur-of-the-moment boot camp, the park is incredible and peaceful. We saw all types of local wildlife along the trail, including squirrels, exotic birds and yes, even a gator who swam up to the bridge to have it's picture taken once it saw us. That made my evening. Even after the Sun had just set, we didn't notice any of the homeless setting up in the picnic shelters as they used to do in troves nor did we notice anyone who I would keep a close eye on. This was a great experience, overall, but this morning my wife's ankle was completely swollen up and my son and I's quads were tender as hell. It was a workout and an experience to remember. Next time, I think we'll allow ourselves a few hours to take more in without being feeling the pressure of making it back before nightfall. There's so much to see and do at this park, including tennis courts, basketball courts and a skate park. But I saw a live gator in the wild and that was awesome!!!

Do the people really dump their garbage in the lake? I've noticed it was bad at the beginning of the year but today it's so embarrassing and not sure what the City does but definitely not clean the garbage in certain parts. It was bad before all the algae buildup.

Gorgeous park ..... in god we picked Wilmington for first East coast stop . I recommend you do the same if Ur ever in the vicinity. Although there were lots of homeless ppl idk if that's always but I mean a lot . They didn't bother or anything just saying

Even as the crisp winds of winter (okay, yes, it's finally dipping into the 50's here and that's as close to winter as we're likely to get) roll in, the landscape at Greenfield Park remains stunning as ever, if not a little more. Bright and vivacious in the summer, the park now shows its more muted side, looking every bit as Gothic and gorgeous. While the vast majority of the park is taken up by the swampy lake (you'll see alligator warning signs everywhere, but no alligators - I was a little disappointed actually), the park also includes a skate park and a playground and picnic area. You can opt to see the whole park in one of two ways: either throw on your comfiest shoes and take the 5-mile walking/biking trail around the perimeter or (my favorite) rent a paddle boat or canoe and see it from the inside out. Either way, don't forget your camera. Between the scenic backdrops, the unusual and aging man-made structures and the wildlife, Greenfield boasts endless photo ops. Just beware the dreaded Durkey (duck+turkey = Durkey). It's ugly, fearless and, unlike the alligators, everywhere.

    Amazing place!

Amazing place. My brother and I were in the area and both of us had never seen a wild alligator before. We walked clockwise around the whole lake and managed to catch this amazing view. It's a good walk, however, I recommend you schedule it to finish before 6 PM. After that, there is a rather dangerous appearing drug addicted homeless community that uses it as a hub to sleep at night.

The area has been clearcut of trees and vegetation and drained. Most of the space is paved over and developed. No habitat for wildlife remains. Due to a lack of greenspace and sidewalks throughout the entire county, yearning for a breath of fresh air, I attempted to walk my dog at the Ogden Sports Complex last Sunday. She is a rescued beagle with a fear of loud noises, likely an abandoned hunting dog. There were several speeding vehicles roaring down the highway in the park and one of them backfired loudly scaring her horribly. She jolted in fear and nearly jerked her leash out of my hand. Terrified, she pulled me toward my car to escape the loud noise of the speeding vehicles. So much for a peaceful walk and breath of fresh air! Bad form, New Hanover County. You call this a park? Like all the other "parks" in the county this is nothing more than an example of overdevelopment and poor planning. I am sure those in the development and construction industries appreciated the giveaway of public land and tax dollars!

The grounds are beautiful, peaceful, and rich with history. Even though only some of the flowers are blooming right now, there is still plenty to enjoy--towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss, winding paths, ponds, sculptures, and the feeling that you've stepped back into old Wilmington. The famous Airlie Oak and the historic chapel make it feel more like wandering through a living postcard than just another garden. Airlie dates back to the late 1800s and was created by Sarah and Pembroke Jones before becoming a public garden preserved for future generations. The gardens are well kept, easy to stroll through, and especially lovely this time of year with the Azalea Festival season beginning. It is the kind of place where you slow down, take a deep breath, and remember that nature did landscaping long before homeowners associations started issuing warning letters. The one drawback--and for us older folks it is a real one--is that there simply are not enough restrooms spread throughout the grounds. With so much walking involved, having a few more bathrooms around the gardens would make a tremendous difference and would make the experience more comfortable for seniors and families. Overall: 4 out of 5 stars. A beautiful, historic Wilmington treasure that is absolutely worth visiting, especially in the spring--just be sure to make a restroom stop before setting out on the trails.
