This is a beautiful park with many different areas to explore. There are several pavilions and playgrounds of all all different sizes. They have a great splash pad area for when it's hot and sand volleyball courts, too. My favorite part is by the pond. They have a huge dog park that is a lovely place to take your dog. One side is for big dogs and the other is for little ones. Great walking paths, too.

Hugh MacRae park is beautiful and very family friendly (including your fur family!). There's multiple picnic areas, walking trails, parking spots, and playgrounds. There's even a softball field, basketball court, dog park, and cute little walking bridge over a pond. Driving through the park is a tad confusing, with multiple one ways and narrow roads. You also have to be very aware of your surrounds due to unsupervised children frequenting the park. The park also sits at a very busy intersection so entering and exit can be very challenging. However, this is a fantastic place to spend the afternoon by yourself or with the family! Covid update** as of this review date the playgrounds and water park are still closed off to the public. The rest of the park seems to be open!

Park wherever you feel like! Bring your crazy kids and leave them unattended! Aside from occasional rude people, I do like the park. There's a pond with walking bridge and gazebo. A paved looping trail or two (couple miles long). A playground/splash zone type situation for the kiddies. Ball fields, tennis/bball courts, pull up bars. Is that a fenced equestrian park? Never seen a horse there. Picnic shelters galore! Always people having a special event or party or cookout at these. I mostly come here for the dog park. They have separate small and large dog fenced in areas, but some people don't understand what size dog they have. Lots of trees and shade. Hey, if you get too bored or need a break, you can just take a shortcut walk to Brewer's Kettle.

This is an excellent park! I was there this past Sunday for the Food Truck Rodeo. Even in the rain we had a blast. There was plenty of covered seating. As the rain slowed we walked over to the playground. As a kid at heart I had a ton of fun. As an educator I thought it was amazing because there are several pieces of equipment for kids with special needs. Although I did not do it this day, running at this park is really nice as well. It is shaded and paved. There is also a dog park that I have not tried before but would love to.

Big play area. Just renovated in 2018. Lots of kids. Slides. Swings. Outdoor fun area. Rubber mat

I love bringing my dog here, and I do believe he loves it as well! He is a smaller breed min pin Chihuahua mix but I put him in the large dog yard because he's so crazy. Owners watch there dogs very closely, there is plenty of room for them to run. Also a very clean area for play!

Beautiful park with a nice long walking trail and ample amenities. Splash pad, large playground, covered patio tables, baseball fields, veterans memorial and a pond. It's been renamed Long Leaf Park due to its abundance of the pine trees throughout the park. A much better namesake for the park rather than in honor of the white supremacist who donated the land to the county. Update this Yelp!

Awesome park for adults and kids of all ages. They have swings for wheelchairs, handicapped, small slides large slides, teeter tots, basketball, walking trails, climbing, places to eat and sit. One if the best parks I have been to in n.c

Wilmington also offers several guided history tours, there's a boat tour that explores the river and its surroundings, and a horse-and-carriage tour that takes you through the historic downtown area. The area has been clearcut of trees and vegetation and drained. Most of the space is paved over and developed. No habitat for wildlife remains. Due to a lack of greenspace and sidewalks throughout the entire county, yearning for a breath of fresh air, I attempted to walk my dog at the Ogden Sports Complex last Sunday. She is a rescued beagle with a fear of loud noises, likely an abandoned hunting dog. There were several speeding vehicles roaring down the highway in the park and one of them backfired loudly scaring her horribly. She jolted in fear and nearly jerked her leash out of my hand. Terrified, she pulled me toward my car to escape the loud noise of the speeding vehicles. So much for a peaceful walk and breath of fresh air! Bad form, New Hanover County. You call this a park? Like all the other "parks" in the county this is nothing more than an example of overdevelopment and poor planning. I am sure those in the development and construction industries appreciated the giveaway of public land and tax dollars!

The grounds are beautiful, peaceful, and rich with history. Even though only some of the flowers are blooming right now, there is still plenty to enjoy--towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss, winding paths, ponds, sculptures, and the feeling that you've stepped back into old Wilmington. The famous Airlie Oak and the historic chapel make it feel more like wandering through a living postcard than just another garden. Airlie dates back to the late 1800s and was created by Sarah and Pembroke Jones before becoming a public garden preserved for future generations. The gardens are well kept, easy to stroll through, and especially lovely this time of year with the Azalea Festival season beginning. It is the kind of place where you slow down, take a deep breath, and remember that nature did landscaping long before homeowners associations started issuing warning letters. The one drawback--and for us older folks it is a real one--is that there simply are not enough restrooms spread throughout the grounds. With so much walking involved, having a few more bathrooms around the gardens would make a tremendous difference and would make the experience more comfortable for seniors and families. Overall: 4 out of 5 stars. A beautiful, historic Wilmington treasure that is absolutely worth visiting, especially in the spring--just be sure to make a restroom stop before setting out on the trails.
