This place is right above the metro station and across the street from the main Lausanne train station. You take a little escalator up, and the vibe is almost romantic, or as romantic as a cafeteria-like setting can be. I love the concept where you use a card, order anything you want, and pay at the end. I feel like I should have tried more dishes before confirming that this place is three stars. I had a salad with figs and goat cheese, and though it was good and plated adorably, it wasn't enough to make me come back. This place is pretty amazing. You get fresh pasta made right in front of you in a beautiful huge 2 level seating area with outlets (a good number of them didn't seem to be working though) and free wifi. When you walk in, you have to get a card from the cashier sitting directly in front of the door. Your order is 'charged' on this card inside and you give the card back and pay on your way out. I did not know this and he rudely called out to me as I was walking past him, just for me to wait 5 mins not even 2 feet away for him to finish checking out a few customers to give me a card. He did not even seem to acknowledge me until I approached him when he was done. The whole time I watched him hand cards out to other customers whom were walking in and said hi to him. Obviously they were regulars and I had no idea this was how things worked. But whatever, he was nice when I eventually spoke with him. Right by the cashier, there's a screen that provides translated menu in a whole range of languages. When you walk all the way to the back, you can get a menu by the counter, but it'll be in French. You line up according to the type of food you want to order - pasta, salad, pizza etc. - and wait your turn. It's going to be a while depending on the time of day, but your dish is made right in front of you! The staff members all seem to speak some English. Quick, easy, fresh and you and eat the herb plants growing at your table. Grab a pladtic card ( one per person) get in the line at the counter for the item you want ( pasta, pizza, salad or soup. Drinks are in the next room) put your card on the reader and it adds it to your tab. The chef let you pick your pasta will make it to order as you stand there. Take your tray and move to the next line. Pay at the end Lots of vegetarian choices. I liked the pesto pasta. Avocado creama was mild but good. Soup was excellent. Awesome place! Quality food, freshly prepared in front of you, and the cost isn't too bad for Switzerland. The place itself is really well run - well structured and orderly, and there are staff members constantly bussing tables and keeping the place clean. The pasta is great! I came here with a group of friends and we each had a pasta dish - no one was disappointed. There is no table service so you need to go to the bar separately for drinks (even water). The staff is nice and they speak English well, but none of the wine pours are very large so be prepared to go back to the bar a few times if you want more alcohol. read more

Very interesting place reminding me of the Marche restaurants in Toronto. Makes me wonder who copied who since both are Swiss. Anyway, the similarities are in the fact that you receive a card upon entering the place and go choose what you want and th food is prepared right in front of you. Very fresh products, tasty food, great service and a very nice atmosphere (a touch of modern, with wide open spaces, great lighting and beautiful decor). The pasta I had was full of flavours and cook to perfection. I had the 'death by chocolate' cake as dessert and true to its name it's a killer! A delicious soft piece of chocolate mousse accompanied by fresh strawberries. I also had an espresso and true to other places where I tried it in Switzerland it was impeccable! Great place and the only reason it doesn't get a five star rating is that the menu isn't for those on a budget. It's not expensive by any means, especially for Swiss standards, but it's certainly not the most affordable option. Definitely worth checking out. You walk in, take a card, bring a card to what you want and put it on the counter scanner and they'll just add whatever you get onto the card for when you check out as you leave. I don't speak French or Italian as I was just passing through town but due to a hotel problem, I ended up close to this part of town. I had pasta and had to pick the noodle type and pick either bread or salad. I ordered 2 extra pieces of bread (baguettes?) because I was starved and they were really good. The taste of the dish I chose was amazing and the concept was great. The one thing I didn't like was that you can pick what you want but it's expensive enough that I couldn't order 2 dishes. With 3 baguettes, pasta and a coke, it was $29. It was actually worth it or maybe I was starving but the experience was fun... and the fact that they don't close till midnight doesn't hurt. read more

I like the concept here and will try it again, but I was underwhelmed by my experience. I walked in early so maybe that's to blame, but I had a train to catch and wanted to get dinner for the ride. There were only few people there but it took ~10 minutes or so for me to even get my order it. Then it was slowly made, but the saucisse was missing. Promising, but the sauce hadtoo much cream and the vegetables were underdone. Luckily, the pasta wasn't over cooked which would have been a deal breaker. While I was in Lausanne Switzerland, my boyfriend and I happened to stumble upon this place while we were looking for a place to eat one night. I really enjoyed the concept of this place and how many different options they had for you to choose from. You take a plastic card at the beginning, one per person, go up to the station you want, order, and then they cook your food and you scan the card on the sensor and it loads your order. You eat and then pay at the end. I ended up choosing the Risotto con Speck, which had a variety of different things in it (tomatoes, peas, carrots, bacon, and things I cant remember) and boy was it delicious. The portion size was also a good one and it left me feeling satisfied and full. Definitely quite the place and I'm glad we went. My boyfriend and I went back to Vapiano again a few nights later with a friend, and he enjoyed it just as much as we did. Also, no one is hovering over you to see how you're doing or to rush you into leaving, which is nice. It's a very nice atmosphere as well. If I were fo ever go back to the area, I will definitely make it a point to stop here for a meal. read more

I like this for a quick meal. The location is great and I love the concept. Go order your food and get a hot meal made in front of you very quickly. I have been here twice and the first time got the salmon pasta. The taste overall was very bland. I wasn't impressed with the flavor, and I would definitely order a different pasta next time. I did get a pizza here once and it was very good. The staff is always friendly, prices are good, and I will definitely return. Very well organized restaurant. You get a card when you arrive and then you can go to the various pizza, pasta, salad counters to place your order. They will then charge the card and when you're done eating, you present the card at check-out counter and pay. Food wise, it's pretty main stream Italian - nothing spectacular - and for the price (way overpriced) you can eat at much better Italian restaurants in Lausanne. This place delivers. Nice menu of various Italian dishes. Very well decorated and fits the theme. All of the pasta is made to order and is excellent. You are given a card upon arrival and there are various stations (pasta/risotto, pizza, dessert, etc) which you visit and charge your purchases to your card. Eat and drink as much as you want and then check out when you have finished your meal. I had the carbonara, a fresh salad, and a few glasses of wine and was very satisfied. You just walk up to them and tell them which pizza you want and they'll make it for you. I also thought that the fresh basil growing in pots at your table was a unique concept. I've been to 3 different Vapianos in 3 different countries and this was my least favorite one. We were just driving thru in a snowy day and all decided this would be a safe choice since we've all been to one before. The lines for the pasta were VERY long. After waiting for about 15-20 mins my friend decided to go to the pizza line since it was shorter. Food was very average. Pasta was undercooked and was lacking flavor. My friends pizza was slightly burnt, salad was great. 3 stars just because I like how organized these chain restaurants are in general. read more

Lausanne typically , because I was studying there before and it is right next to the train station . I like the way of ordering food here , reminds me of many places in Asia like Japan. You are given a card at the entrance to be charged later on when order. and inside there are many different stations to prepare different kind of food , like pizza , pasta ect . There is also a bar where you can get fresh coffee and tea also desserts .Cocktails are after 5pm ( I just love cocktails) . The sitting is open space cafeteria like style ,self service when food is ready . Must point out that , food is ready within 15 to 20 mins . And they are damn right decent ! read more

Vapiano offers great food for a great price. The indoor decor looks stylish and modern, while the food tastes authentic and rustic. There are stations all across the restaurant ( looks more like a giant living room), that serve either pizza, pasta, drinks, or dessert. Because of this, chefs specialize in making these dishes and thus the quality and taste is great. The food comes out 10-15 minutes tops, and from the 3 times I have been here, it is always consistent and excellent. I order the penne pasta with shrimp and spinach, while sharing a margarita pizza amongst my company. Like the great food, the employees I have met are nice and courteous, and seem to understand multiple languages such as English, Spanish, and obviously French. However, being located right on a noisy large street, bus stop, and train stop, the location is sub par. In addition, in order to go to the restaurant, you'll have to take an escalator up, which solely goes to the restaurant. A little bit of a hassle to just get to a restaurant. Overall great chefs with great food at reasonable prices. - Warning: the pasta is cooked pretty tough, like italian and "al dente". Ask them to cook it longer if you want it to be more soft and light. Also, I do not recommend the shrimp, especially to people that have sensitive teeth/mouth. It is hard as a rock. Note: I had already eaten somewhere else and just wanted to see layout with a brief walk around. Entire place put me off.
