I love stopping by Van's Chocolate while in Hendersonville, NC. It is a family-owned company that makes delicious treats. I first found the chocolate store when I took a tour of the area, and this was a stop. I've been coming back ever since. They have premade boxes or you can select your pieces from the case. The boxes are made with either assortments, all dark or all milk, or caramels. Then there are prewrapped treats throughout the store. I like that they have various items for many different holidays, whether Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day or Valentine's Day. Standout for me was the chocolate- covered nuts and peanut brittle. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Pricing is standard for high- end shops so expect to pay for that chocolate heaven. Ordered chocolate covered strawberries for an important annual catered event. The order wasn't ready at the time it was promised. Talked with staff and management, all of whom were very indifferent and practically rude, as though this was a run-of-the mill situation for them to not have the product on time. I had to order the product at incredible edibles, and they were able to meet my deadline in time for my catered event. I paid much more at incredible edibles but the product was top quality (far superior to the product at Vans). More importantly, the service was prompt, professional and friendly at Incredible Edibles, unlike Vans. Mistakes happen, but what was most disappointing about Vans is that when they dropped the ball on my order, they just didn't seem to care. Wow! What a treat! Drove past the shop, did a U-turn when I saw the word - CHOCOLATE! I was not disappointed! Russ and his wife Peg make an outstanding product. No shortcuts here! They even had delicious sugar-free chocolates for hubs to enjoy. The shop is immaculate, Russ greets you at the door and gives a tour of the beautifully displayed candies! We enjoyed our chocolates on our road trip back to Texas. We plan to visit the shop again when in the area - meanwhile I'm working up an order on line. I was visiting the Carl Sandburg house with my family and other visitors overheard us talking about going to Kilwin's afterwards. They said we should go to Van's instead. Even the gift shop employee said Van's was really good, and they gave us directions. So we went off in search of Van's Chocolates with rather high hopes. On the bright side, it smells amazing. The shop is pretty large. Our visit was at the beginning of spring so there was a large selection of Easter chocolates. Since I had three kids in a candy shop I told them they could each pick 2 pieces of candy from the case (and I had one...). Anyway 7 pieces of chocolate came out to $9. Good grief. I just found the Godiva store of the NC foothills. The chocolate was fine, but I should have gone with my first choice, Kilwin's. read more

Their chocolates are very good. They make a thoughtful and appreciated gift. Customer service is iffy at best. The past times I've gone to purchase gifts, the woman behind the counter was kind of, sort of grumpy. I felt like an interloper even though I was there to make (and did make) a purchase. The most recent trip was about two weeks before Christmas. Mid-afternoon. Virtually empty. As I was checking out, I noticed two rolls of pretty wrapping paper. I commented but did not ask directly to have the boxes wrapped. No offer to wrap them either, even though I mentioned they were gifts. It was off-putting. Perhaps their good chocolate is how they get away with poor customer service. Just guessing. read more

Amazing Chocolates.....amazing family. Looking at a prior review that seems to imply that Kilwin's is less expensive - it depends on what you decide to buy. The truffles in the case are a bit higher priced, but well worth it. Much better than Godiva or any other high end brand. And Van's has some great flavors. The cinnamon and the pomegranate are my two favorites. (If you decided on a truffle at Kilwin's it would actually cost more.) The owners, Will and Celeste (and their 3 beautiful children) donate a portion of the Van's profits to charity. I would buy from them on that principle alone, but it is just an added benefit to purchasing some of the best chocolate in the country. And trust me - I eat a lot of chocolate! read more
