Leann did a practice run on my wedding hair and makeup while I was in Kona planning for my wedding in May. I couldn't have been more thrilled about how it turned out. Leann is going to do my and two of my bridesmaids hair and makeup . Leann is also very professional. She had her iPad out with all the pictures of hair and makeup I had ever sent her. I was so pleased to see that she had taken the time to be organized (which is great because weddings can be super stressful!) I look forward to my wedding day and the pampering I will receive. Thanks again :) read more

Lia and the entire team at Vanity box were so accommodating. Our daughter had gotten all knotted up after some weeks of neglect and beach. In a 2 hour session and very reasonable price she was back to her curly self. Lia was checking in with her and they were chatting and we had a great experience even got to get a beer bit at the Kona Brewing nearby. She even was able to make room in her schedule by rescheduling her next appointment with another of her clients. This was an amazing service for a great price and we were all super satisfied with Lia and VB!!! read more

I booked Lia at the recommendation of my wedding planner for my wedding hair and makeup. Though I was hesitant at first because I had never been to that salon, I was absolutely amazed at the work she did on me, my mom and my sister. She was able to fit us in with short notice and come out on a Sunday as I ended up switching stylists in the last minute (long story!). I have a bit of a difficult haircut to make into a wedding-worthy style, but holy moly was it ever beautiful! We did a trial run a few days before the wedding, and Lia worked with me to determine what worked and what didn't work. On the day of the wedding, she came to our condo and spent a good 5 hours on our hair and makeup. Lia's makeup and hair products were all clean and of good quality (none of us had any skin issues after). She was friendly, participated in our jokes and humour and made us all look beautiful. I would highly recommend Lia! read more

Vanity Box Salon - Hair Salons Near Me - Kailua, Hawaii

we were visiting the big island for 3 weeks + i sought a stylist who could cut my asian hair which reached down to my belly-button. I decided to try Erin as I have good experience with stylists who trained at Vidal Sasoon. I was really nervous when I got there but Erin put me at ease as we discussed what I envisioned. we agreed on a shattered bob with long layers framing my face + not shorter than my collar-bone + Erin delivered with flying colors! the shampoo (with relaxing scalp massage) + hair cut cost US$45! all my girlfriends raved about my fresh new look when I got home too :) you just have to go!! I completely recommend Vanity Box! read more

I would not recommend this establishment. I booked a stylist for my July wedding way back in November. In April I emailed her to confirm details, and she said she was no longer available, but did recommend another stylist, who she said was the owner. I have not talked to this person at all. She has not returned my multiple phone calls, or an email sent to the first stylist asking for her to call me. I am sorry but that is bad business. It is my wedding...this sent me into panic mode to find a stylist at the last minute... and from across the country. Even if it wasnt a wedding, you dont just ignore clients who were booked, and never return their phone calls. read more

I liked the haircut that I got from the hair stylist (I forget her name). She also gave a brief, yet awesome neck massage while shampooing. The ambiance of the place was a little weird with misplaced decorations and overall very little style, but the haircut didn't reflect that. Also, another weird thing was that I was expected to pay cash (which I wasn't told when booking the appointment or when I entered) with the particular hair stylist. After a moment of confusion, they figured out what to do, but still, a little weird. read more

Haven't even tried the place yet but I don't think I'll even consider this place. Calls go to voicemail and I've tried several times throughout the day. I don't want to talk to a machine! Move on to another salon that wants to talk to you. read more

I got my hair cut and colored by Sheila at Vanity Box. It turned out awesome!! I really enjoyed the service, the salon itself and thought all the girls were really nice and professional especially Sheila. I can't wait to go back!! Thank you Vanity Box! read more

I was just in Kona for some R&R a few weeks ago and on impulse, got my hair done. I went through the whole nine yards. My hair had been box dyed black six months so it needed a lot of TLC. Sheila, the stylist at Vanity Box, took the time to walk me through the entire process and at the end, I walked out w/ a balayage effect. I felt like a new me and was so happy w/ the results. Sheila blow dried my hair with a round brush and used top quality salon products on my hair! So impressed and wish I could hire her as my personal hair stylist so I can feel like Beyonce all day everyday. LOVED IT! read more

Not much of a 5 star place if your hairstylist flakes on you because she has a bad hangover and ignores text messaging and phone call.

I initially used Yelp to find a salon focusing on the reviews and ratings. After driving around at 9am, calling different places only to find out they were closed, not accepting walk ins, booked, or charged $60-$70 for a simple haircut, I went to Facebook and was referred to Tosha. I called, they asked what time I was thinking of coming in. I told them "How's about right now?" They said come on down! Within seconds of entering the establishment, I was greeted and sat down. Tosha took extra care in listening to what I wanted done. She washed my hair, gave me a head massage and styled it in the end. Needless to say, I have found my go to stylist! I can't express how happy I am with the professionalism and the customer service I received! Tosha cut my hair exactly how I described what I wanted, at exactly the length I wished for, because we all know that some stylists will cut off four inches when you ask for one. Thanks so much Tosha! I will see you again! Also wanted to add that all the work done on my long hair was VERY affordable! Blew my mind. read more

I came here after with an extremely detailed hair request and lia, the owner went above and beyond to help me with my hair needs. Great Salon! Competitive prices. Friendly staff. Clean. Modern. Open feel. Liane Y. is a fantastic stylist...listens and gives great suggestions! read more

I went in today while on vacation and was thrilled when I left. The atmosphere is great. Lia was very attentive and caring. Due to the thickness of my hair and a few months ago going 13 inches shorter then normal My hair was bushy and boxy, but she knew exactly how to manage my hair. Because I have kids I really appreciated how efficient she was. I normally will find an issue with my hair but her partial color and cut was perfect. I got several compliments from the salon and grocery store before making it back to my place. This will be a yearly stop when I am in Hawaii. Thank you to the very talented women of Vanity Box. A Big thank you to Lia. read more

I had my wedding hair done at the vanity box...Lia was fantastic. I gave her a quick description of the general look/vibe I desired and she executed it beautifully. Exactly what I wanted. Very non-pretentious salon, Lia had a fantastic attitude, and most importantly I felt and looked beautiful for my wedding. read more

Lia did an amazing job on my hair!!! I have been trying to let the natural white grow in without having a stripe! Lia is an artist! I can't tell you how many colors she blended to give me the most natural, beautiful blond hair, with light and dark of my own hair. It has been a month and it is still wonderful! read more

Shauna F. has been taking really good care of my hair for years! My highlights are always perfect, I've gone blonde to burgundy to brunette to blonde throughout the years and she's killed it every single time. I constantly get complimented on my hair and asked who does it, I constantly have to carry her business card around cause everyone keeps asking for her. She's so easy to have conversations with and will tell you like it is, if it's not for you she will definitely let you know. She's been doing hair for over a decade and has so much experience. I love that she puts up with my long thick hair, LOL! Owner Leah is always so sweet as well. Do not expect to just walk in and get an appt with her, If you wanna get in with Shauna you'll definitely need to book in advance, she is really that awesome and she is always booked so call or text ASAP! read more

I had avoided getting my hair cut for almost a year and realized the time at come. I wasn't interested in paying a ton of money, but still wanted a nice, professional cut. I got what I wanted at Vanity Box! My stylist, Sheila, was AMAZING. She listened closely to my wants and needs (keep the length, but not too many layers) and even gave me a ride in to town after learning I was car-less for the day. Her service went above and beyond my expectations! The cut was great and the styling was exactly what I wanted. If you're looking for a professional, quality haircut with friendly staff, look no further than Vanity Box Salon. read more

I had my hair done my tosha yesterday and I am so happy with the results! I have lived in Kona for over a year and a half and after a bad experience at supercuts I had procrastinated on doing my hair again. My hair is long, thinner and kind of difficult and she did a great job cutting the perfect amount and layering it perfectly. The highlights are natural just how I wanted them! The best part was the slice of heaven shampoo she did! Ahhhh I could stop in there once a week just for that! She went the extra mile and styled it so nicely for me as well! read more

I was in kona for my sisters wedding and needed a hair stylist. I did my research and read all the yelp reviews/websites and found vanity box! I will definitely go back when I'm in kona read more

My very particular teenage son needed a haircut. Tasha did a great job. He was very happy with his stylish haircut.

I've been seeing Tosha at the Vanity Box for a couple of years for my cuts, and colors. She does an awesome job and has very reasonable prices. When I went from long to short she was careful to understand what I wanted instead of just cutting it. Then she didn't cut it as short as I said because she wanted to make sure it was okay before going shorter. Her feeling is "you can always cut more but it's not possible to put it back". I really appreciated that she was careful to be sure that I was happy with my cut before just chopping it off. She also listens to how I am. I'm not a person to sit and style my hair every morning so when I asked for a certain style she told me that the style requires work. If I'm not willing to do the work to style it every day she doesn't want to cut it that way because she wants me to be happy with my style all the time not just when I leave. I appreciate her honesty and have always left with a nice style that I can continue to do myself. Highly recommend her. She knows her stuff and really cares about her customers. read more

Lia not only styled my and my bridesmaids' hair for our wedding in Kona last month, she came to the rescue for makeup when the resort sent an inexperienced artist. She has a wonderful eye for style and color in addition to a fun and stress-free attitude. I highly recommend her! read more

On a recent visit to Hawaii Island, I was in desperate need of a good haircut. It had been 6 weeks since my last cut with my stylist at home and my short hair was looking pretty shaggy. Going to a new stylist is always nerve-wracking, not knowing how it's going to come out and if you're going to have to live with a bad haircut until it grows out. I checked reviews on Yelp and made an appointment with Lia at the Vanity Box. Her reviews were all very good, but I was still nervous. No need for the nerves - she gave me a terrific cut! Took just enough off to shape my hair nicely and left the bangs a little longer, just as I wanted. She is a very skilled stylist and I highly recommend her. read more

I searched and searched the web for a stylist or a good, trustworthy salon and finally came up with Vanity Box. (I found it by searching the Bumble & Bumble salon locator, knowing that B&B products are excellent.) I asked for Erin, but she was booked, so she recommended Lia Uemoto. A great find! I've been on the Big Island since early June, which means it had been about 8 wks. since my last color and cut, which I had in southern CA, where I live. So my hair was too thick, too blonde, and out of control because of the humidity of Hawaii. It's always a little scary going to a new stylist and especially when you have short hair, like I do. There's not much room for a mistake. Lia did a fabulous job with the color and the cut. It lays beautifully and the humidity, even on the Hilo side where we have our vacation home, hasn't made it unruly wavy. (Cost for both was $130, which is about what I pay in southern CA. I paid with credit card no problem.) Lia told me she knew she wanted to do hair since she was 7 and started braiding her own hair in her bathroom mirror based on braiding books her mom bought her. She worked as an apprentice starting at 14, then went to beauty school after high school. Although she hasn't gone to any of the big name academies, don't let that stop you from booking with her. She's incredibly talented, listens closely to what you want, and will honor your wishes, even if she disagrees. And she's a lovely person. As for the salon, it's quite nice, although it looks pretty plain-Jane from the outside. It's set in an industrial area, but, hey! Real estate is pricey in Kailua, yes? The washbowl chairs are super-comfy. It would be nice if they provided robes so you could make sure your clothing doesn't get hair color and hair on it, but that's the only suggestion I could make to make the whole experience even better. Lia and Vanity Box: first-rate stylist, excellent salon. read more
