Searching out some sun on a 60* Friday, we stumbled upon Vanilla Bean Creamery in Shipshewana, Indiana. We were immediately drawn to the kid friendly, modern feel of this establishment equipped with a kids play house, picnic tables, and a handmade connect four game. The ice cream shoppe is mom and pop owned. They make all their ice cream themselves from the farm's milking cows. I had the mint chocolate chip in a waffle cone and felt the price was more than fair at $3.50 for a large single scoop. First off, if like me you're coming from Chicago or any other "big city," the price-per-portion ratio is going to swing wildly in your favor. One of the worst foods we could eat is ice cream!!! Most ice cream is loaded with chemicals and things we cannot pronounce. Fortunately, vanilla bean creamery is wholesome pure ice cream, and the proof is in the flavor. I take a cooler into town with ice packs, get four or 5 pints of Different flavors, then I always have it on hand. The pistachio taste like pistachios...with real pistachios in it!!! We came here on our day trip to the Amish country. We were surprised to see a worker dressed in the traditional outfit, but there were others that weren't I love how integrated it is! The location right in the middle of town and the outdoor tables and play house they have for very small kids will make your experience great! The interior is new and there was a lot to choose from. They do samples and we tried a few flavors. We went for the flight, which gives you four flavors in smaller scoops as we weren't going to eat much anyway. The four flavors we got were the Peanut Butter Oreo, Mint Chip, Coffee Toffee, Cookie and Cream. The Peanut Butter Oreo is super rich and you must really like peanut butter if you are going to get this. The Coffee Toffee was my favorite, as the balance between the two flavors felt right to me. The Cookies and Cream and Mint Chip are a step above what you would find at other places. read more

There's ice cream and there's ice cream. Tonight is a Sunday night in Shipshewana and we come to this quaint Amish town to do work within the RV industry now and again. We had an errand to run (on a Sunday!) and, on the way back, I couldn't stop thinking of ice cream. We passed several places that sold ice cream, but they were all closed. Then, as we rolled through Shipshe I saw cars in the parking lot and lights in the building of Vanilla Bean Creamery. Is it an omen? Is it a mirage? The first thing I passed was a cooler with a tremendous number of clearly hand-packed containers of ice cream. I was already beginning to smile. This was a good sign. This place is spotless inside with two rows of various flavors of ice cream listed on the menu board. The people behind the counter are the kind of people whom you'd want as your own niece or nephew - friendly, polite, and just seemingly good kids. We got a single scoop of Amish peanut butter and another of salted caramel. My wife accidentally dripped a bit on her finger and she smiled ear-to-ear. This was good ice cream. No. It's great ice cream. It's clearly made the way some folks remember on their grandma's porch where all the kids get a turn at the churn. Pure simple ingredients and vibrant flavors clearly show how good this stuff is. The texture is creamy. Rather than tasting like the low-bidder chemist's lazy afternoon assignment that they create before a well-deserved vacation, this tastes like ice cream. In fact the flavor and consistency and simplicity of this wonderful treat are so pure I think I'm going to go back and get vanilla ice cream. I was so happy with the flavors we chose but I want to taste the soul of this ice cream as I perceive it may be a religious experience. Excellent ice cream & atmosphere. The people working were very nice. One friend had a strawberry shake that was delish and they gave him a bubble tea type straw - extra points for that. The rest of us had cones and cups. There must have been 40 flavors. The waffle cones were great. All the ice cream is made locally. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating and ample parking. We stopped in on a Sunday evening because very little is open on Sundays in town. We were delighted with the cute atmosphere, the number of flavors of ice cream, and the quality of the ice cream as well. The ice cream is creamy and has a great texture, they make their own waffle cones in house (and they were crunchy, not stale), and they have a case filled with pints and quarts to go if you're in a rush and they're busy. We were served by two polite young men, who were kind and helpful. We will definitely visit again. read more
