Only thing open in Shipshewana on a Sunday! Great stop for some real, good ice cream.

Butter pecan is amazing so is their lemon cookie dairy free option. Super fun environment, we played uno while there. Bathrooms are single stall and only one changing station for babies.

Amazing Ice Cream, super creamy and rich. Very flavorful and friendly, kind staff. Great experience, we will be back!

A single scoop cup of the salted caramel ice cream.

There's ice cream and there's ice cream. Tonight is a Sunday night in Shipshewana and we come to this quaint Amish town to do work within the RV industry now and again. We had an errand to run (on a Sunday!) and, on the way back, I couldn't stop thinking of ice cream. We passed several places that sold ice cream, but they were all closed. Then, as we rolled through Shipshe I saw cars in the parking lot and lights in the building of Vanilla Bean Creamery. Is it an omen? Is it a mirage? The first thing I passed was a cooler with a tremendous number of clearly hand-packed containers of ice cream. I was already beginning to smile. This was a good sign. This place is spotless inside with two rows of various flavors of ice cream listed on the menu board. The people behind the counter are the kind of people whom you'd want as your own niece or nephew - friendly, polite, and just seemingly good kids. We got a single scoop of Amish peanut butter and another of salted caramel. My wife accidentally dripped a bit on her finger and she smiled ear-to-ear. This was good ice cream. No. It's great ice cream. It's clearly made the way some folks remember on their grandma's porch where all the kids get a turn at the churn. Pure simple ingredients and vibrant flavors clearly show how good this stuff is. The texture is creamy. Rather than tasting like the low-bidder chemist's lazy afternoon assignment that they create before a well-deserved vacation, this tastes like ice cream. In fact the flavor and consistency and simplicity of this wonderful treat are so pure I think I'm going to go back and get vanilla ice cream. I was so happy with the flavors we chose but I want to taste the soul of this ice cream as I perceive it may be a religious experience. And I won't even have to be there on a Sunday for that.

Need a snack? Craving the best soft pretzel you've ever had? Look no further than Ben's Soft…read morePretzels. Situated across the street from E&S grocery store. This "famous" little gem is known for its delicious pretzels and other scrumptious pretzel dough based delights. We started with the regular pretzel and purchased nacho cheese and sweet mustard sauce accompaniments for $1 each. The pretzel was exactly what we had hoped for...light, airy, doughy, but with a crunchy exterior. The whole family enjoyed splitting one pretzel. Afterward, I was still feeling a bit peckish. I decided to order myself an ice coffee along with a pretzel dough rolled all beef hotdog with melted Swiss cheese sandwiched inside. Love at first bite. The whole experience was HEAVEN. I've never had more tasty "junk" food in my life. Dip it in the sweet mustard accompaniment (trust me) for the ultimate tastebud sensory experience. I think we spent under $15 for all the stuff. Extremely reasonable and you can go for a snack or a meal. So many treats and a friendly/ hardworking staff made the whole experience delightful.

Better than average pretzels tho I had them at the traveling Shipshewana convention at Kane County…read more In all seriousness, I prefer Jojo's Pretzels also in Shipshewana. I'm glad for ANY Amish business that succeeds outside the confines of it's hood, in this case Shipshewana is where Ben's Soft Pretzels started by an AMISH FAMILY! So happy for them, F this modern world and modern people can go to you know where both literally and figuratively. Amish people are some of the last people on Earth who keep it real. Spiritual, real knowledge, real skills, quality. Did I say F THE MODERN WORLD PEOPLE already?!! Yeah, good.

This place is a tourist trap, but for good reason…read more This huge restaurant spans 3 floors with the basement operating as a buffet option ($8.99 per child and $20+ for adults). I took a look, but was more impressed with the freshness, value and experience on the main floor with menu order options. The restaurant style reminded me of a re-imagined Amish version of Cracker Barrel with handmade oddities for sale. It was surprisingly busy with it being 4:30pm, and slightly annoying to learn the kids could not have the buffet if we were ordering from the menu because there are separate seating arrangements. We chose the restaurant side. Our waitress was bubbly and energetic... extremely thorough while maintaining a friendly neighborly vibe. She commanded the restaurant like it was her vocation and truly seemed pleased to serve her hungry patrons. Once she took our order and brought out our drinks we were delighted with a small homemade loaf of seed bread with real butter, apple butter, or Amish peanut butter (peanuts, honey, and marshmallow fluff mixed together) to top it with. As we enjoyed snacking, the two kids meals, and two adult dinners with soft drinks (they do not serve alcohol) came in around $75 total. The kids meal came with homemade fried (2) drumsticks, fries, drink and a cookie reserved for the end of the meal. Everything is homemade and my picky eater's gobbled it all up! Hubby ordered the fried chicken dinner and was happy enough, but both of us noted that our breast was slightly over cooked by a minute or so (slim margins, but made for a slightly dry and tough tasting breast). He loved his corn accompaniment, noting that it tasted like it was freshly cut from the cob. I opted for the Amish sampler plate and enjoyed the meatloaf, the breading of the fried chicken, the texture of the roast beef (though the seasoning could've improved), and the chicken stuffing with fresh carrots with a slight crunchy texture mixed in. The green bean side was good enough with the bacon, but lacking a crispy texture. The mashed potatoes and beef gravy were just okay. This gargantuan portion also came with a small side salad of leafy greens, a cucumber slice and grape tomato with dressing of your choice. Everything was good... so much food! I felt like I should've toiled on the farm all day to earn such a filling meal. For dessert we bought a homemade strawberry rhubarb pie to take home. Perfectly cooked (no soggy bottom) and wonderful texture and married flavors. The pie was worth it for $18 and if you stop by the visitor center you can get a $1 coupon. Just make sure to bring it in so they can staple it to the receipt for accounting. If we ever come back I may need to try the lemon meringue pie. The peaks were gorgeous and so tall! Pros: good home cooking. Homemade pies. Value prices for what you get. Cons: potential long waits, separate buffet from restaurant and some food lacking seasoning.

The food quality was quite disappointing here. Everything looked so good on the menu and I was so…read morevery hungry, I ordered the sampler platter because I couldn't decide. Kudos to the restaurant for having that option , otherwise I would have had to order multiple meals. Besides the fresh bread and butter - which was amazing- nothing tasted good. The fried chicken was soggy, the meatloaf was mostly bread, the beef had no flavor at all it tasted like it's been rinsed in water. The stuffing was basically just mushy bread with seasoning. The green beens were mushy frozen green beans, the baked apple was overly sugary and the flavor was just strange. The food was 2 stars at best. However, the service was 5 star, excellent. Our waitress was exceptionally attentive and generous with the free bread and helping us with the menu items. It's a very large restaurant and there were only a few us us dining there right after the holidays. There is a large interesting gift shop inside the restaurant and an entire bakery. I wish we would have gotten dessert but given that we were not enjoying our meal, we decided against it.
