Was visiting my parents in Baltimore and wanted to visit a thrift store to find treasures before I went back home. Unfortunately lots of places are closed on Tuesday, not Vanessa's though! Her shop is truly one of the best in the country, but her prices remain accessible (part of the reason her shop is so excellent). I've gotten so many wonderful things here! So much fun rummaging through fantastic vintage tablecloths and embroidered linens, then deciding which to take home to feed my eclectic addictions. Great quality and very fair prices. I find something new each time I drop in, conveniently located on Charles Street in the heart of Federal Hill. What - these drawers have odd old kitchen tools?! And copper tins over there?! Her front window is always fun and inspired - recently a 70s theme, on point. Vanessa is the real treasure here. I enjoy her warmth and conversation; a neighborhood gem. Vanessa is lovely and her selection is fabulous. If one picks through the chock-a-block store, one can find amazing pieces. She has excellent selection of jewelry, handbags and porcelain. The value is good and she can tell you about each piece (material) and how it came to her store. I bought two amber necklaces today and I am not a huge amber fan, they were that nice. Next time I will spend more time on the Bakelite bracelets. read more

I'm really reluctant to write this review as I would love to keep this bevy of sparkles my little secret but I shouldn't be greedy. Vanessa amasses a great collection of vintage pins, bags, scarves, kitchen wear, jewelry, and linens. The clothing in the back is not as loved and are just so-so. Be aware she only takes cash or check. I usually use my walk to the ATM after picking out my purchases as my time to ask myself, "do I really need this double strand of pearls with fabulous flower clasp?". The resounding whirl of money spitting out at me pretty much sums up my trips there. read more

Great vintage finds at Vanessa's! She is kind and reminds you of an old friend. She is the broach queen! Lots of colors, metals and classics that make for great conversation pieces. It's been too long since I've been to see Vanessa, but every experience has been a lasting memory, with the most beautiful 'souvenirs' bought each visit. She is always so excited to share her latest finds; for example, I remember inspecting her beaded bag collection (museum-quality, in my opinion)...with her guidance and enthusiasm and aesthetic genius, these wares are in the right shop while they await purchase. Her collection of china and dining pieces is delightful, as is her collection of jewelry. In particular, I always enjoyed her selection of linens. Some things may be haphazardly displayed, and you must tread carefully within such a small space, but if you have time to linger and savor, then please visit this idyll of a shop. I agree with the last reviewer. I don't want others to know about this store. Vanessa has the best eye for fabric, vintage jewelery - especially Bakelite jewelery, depression glass, 1950s style planters, Victorian clothing and fabulous kitchen kitsch. I have bought so much here, fabulous rhinestone earrings for my wedding, aprons (she makes them out of vintage fabric and also sells authentic ones like my lovely Victorian lace half apron), plates, a sterling silver pencil holder, fabrics for pillows, pearl rhinestone necklace, little planters and vases and much more. If you have a project or an event, she will help you put something together. She is so nice and funny and warm and the prices are great. I am a huge fan! Her windows are also amazing. I wish I knew how this place was. I Ubered since it was raining so hard, and after getting there 40 minutes of traffic to go one mile, it was 6:10 pm. Online says they close at 7pm. The hand-written sign says "winter hours till 6:30 on Thursday" and another written sign that says "YES!!! We ARE open!!" But the lights were off and the door was locked well before the closing times. I rang the bell and knocked, alas, to no avail. I just had to stand there in the rain to get ANOTHER Uber to take me back. Thank you very much for wasting my time and money. I don't know how you run a business with inconsistency, but I can't imagine it would last. read more

Vanessa's the shop and Vanessa the owner herself are true, deep and wonderful finds. A previous reviewer commented that she was overpriced and this is patently untrue. Her initial prices are market equivalent or slightly lower and she almost always will cut a deal even if not asked.One last thing. Her shop moved 2 years ago and is now at 1028 south charles street . I've bought every Christmas present for my wife here for over 15 years. It is "THE" single best place in Baltimore. You can get inexpensive chic "paste" or more up scale antique jewelry and clothing/dishes/just plain cool stuff. It embodies that storefront treasure store you wish you knew about. Vanessa is extremely knowledgeable, helpful and HONEST!!!!. It's a must for any husband (or significant other) to get that special present that not only is great but shows that you cared enough to really look. It is also a great place for a girl's day out where you hit Fedreal Hill for lunch/drinks and then spend hours going through all the treasure. Since the stock is constantly changing, its always worth a visit. I grew up in NY in the 60's and remember going to the Village to places like this. fells Point in the early 70's had places like this. This Federal Hill store has moved from the above address to another, just about two blocks away at 1028 S. Charles Street near Dan Bros. Shoes and the Market. The owner knows her stuff, especially period jewelry, and greets you warmly. Her prices are very fair - in fact often are below the market price I've seen on Ebay and at NY or Philly shops. If you are dressing for a gala, a party, or even just for the office, she has what you need and offers honest advice. Doing the Downton Abbey look? Go see Vanessa. The store attracts prop masters from film and TV and stage, and also performers looking for good costume bling that will make a statement. Collectors and fashionistas, too, go there to find jewelry that are unique that everyone else isn't wearing. It looks like every period from Victorian to the 1970s is represented.
