I've been lucky enough to be a student of Stephanie VanAlstine off and on for almost ten years. While she was already an exceptional teacher before earning her Master's degree in Vocal Performance from NYU, her pedagogical studies really turned her into one of the best teachers you'll find in NYC (or anywhere else, for that matter.) I love singing dearly- but I'm extremely self conscious of my voice, and so I've always been super apprehensive when I take a private voice lesson. I am always so worried about being judged. While other teachers I had never made me feel overtly uncomfortable, Stephanie's style is so kind and encouraging that I've never loved my voice more than when I'm in a room with her. You'll never feel safer or more encouraged than when you're with her- and she will teach you some pretty amazing stuff that will have you absolutely loving your voice in no time. Vocal teachers are on every corner in New York City- but Stephanie truly is one of a kind, and I stand by the fact that she is simply one of the best of the best. Stephanie is an amazing voice teacher. I took lessons with her at NYU and have stayed with her since. Stephanie always meets me where I am, both vocally and in general. If I'm having an off day, that's totally cool with her and she'll work with me and what I'm able to do that day. She's great at helping me feel comfortable with my voice and never pushes me to be a "certain kind of singer." In addition to private lessons, I've attended her "Freedom Through Flow" workshops and can tell that she really works with everyone's individual voices. Our lessons are always so much fun and I love spending an hour with her every week, away from all my other stresses in life, to just make music! I've had some voice teachers who were very results-oriented, and looked at my voice as a problem to be fixed. If something wasn't working the way it was "supposed" to, I would feel discouraged and not feel like showing up to the next lesson. Stephanie is completely different; she looks at you as a whole person, and encourages you to grow and develop your voice beyond the results of just one song. Her support has done wonders for my voice, and helped me remember why I enjoyed singing in the first place! I was hesitant to take online lessons, but the experience was very positive- I felt like I was right in the room with Stephanie, and it was really easy to schedule around my needs. Stephanie is an excellent teacher. She offers so many great techniques and knowledge you can use as a singer, without making it feeling like a work. She makes a lesson fun and enjoyable. She is patient, respectful, kind, positive, pays close attentions to details and works with me to improve at all times. I look forward to my lessons every week. Great warm ups, matched for everyone's voice individually. Have made great progress in the time I've been working with Stephanie. Very encouraging and supportive of every student and always happy to help out with new song suggestions and out-of-class support. A lot of fun to work with as an artist as well. Every class feels like a collaboration of two artists. She puts in a lot of work and it shows in her students.
