I'm actually surprised this restaurant has not been posted on Yelp! yet. It certainly has a wide web presence. Van Mai doesn't have it's own website, but other reviews sites love this place. And for good reason. My partners family have been visiting Van Mai for over 16 years; they don't even look at the menu anymore. I've been lucky to have eaten here three times in the past month.
The restaurant is big and welcoming, good for groups. Like most Vietnamese restaurants in Richmond, it's BYO. I'm not sure if it's wine only, but they do carry wine and beer if you need it.
The decor is not amazing, but pay attention the hand-written menu items on the white board. They're delicious.
Service is always friendly and efficient, according to my own experience and other reviews.
Like I said, I've never tasted better Vietnamese food in Melbourne, especially when the price of a main dish is under $15. Worth it, all the time. read more
