Ph Nom is an unassuming looking eatery in the food court located on the lower ground level of the shoping center, The Emporium. The restaurant boasts of MSG-free, high quality ingredients with authentic Vietnamese recipes. My pho bo Saigon came with tender brisket, quality steak, and your usual beef balls. The beef broth was HANDS DOWN the most finest, clean-tasting, and flavorful beef broth that I have ever had. It was not oily and surprisingly had a lightness to it. No hoison sauce or sriracha needed to go into this broth. It was perfect the way it was. I also tried the Saigon sandwich, which came with housemade pate, wagyu beef, and eggs. The sandwich was delicious, flavorful, and hearty. Housemade pate truly makes a difference. I did not think a Vietnamese sandwich could've been enjoyed that much but this was an elevated version of your usual banh mi. The Vietnamese iced coffee was also delicious and almost finished immediately. I will definitely miss Ph Nom when I return home! Vietnamese cuisine is one of my favorite and growing up with it, I thought I had tasted it all but Ph Nom was a whole new level entirely! read more

What's that? A big fancy new shopping centre has opened in Melbourne and people are flocking there to visit MUJI and Uniqlo? Ahuh. Very nice dear. I'm more interested in the food offerings they have at Emporium and it was Pho Nom that I was most keen to sample first, as it's been spoken and tweeted about for months now, with chef Jerry Mai even giving potential new customers a sample at some pop up Pho kitchens months ago at the National. I'm glad to say that it lived up to expectations, my Saigon Pho Bo broth rich with spices and flavour and three cuts of beef (rare, brisket and meatball) bobbing around amongst the rice noodles. We also sampled the rice paper rolls - the pork skewered and the lemongrass chicken got the thumbs up from the grown ups and the crispy pork got devoured by Miss 3 before she started in on the Pho. It was only the first week when we visited and it was clear that every store in Emporium was struggling a little with the onslaught of people while trying to bed down systems. The Pho Nom crew did a stellar job, pumping on the food quickly and maintaining a smile the whole time. The only downfall? With hardly any seating (something that seems to be apparent with all food vendors in the centre) it was tricky finding somewhere to sit. I have eaten my fair share of Vietnamese and I do love the recent trend of super fast and fresh Viet places popping up all over Melbourne. I think so far, this one is my favourite. It's in a shopping mall food court, so you know it's designed for quick and cheap eats - but the quality of the food is really high. I had the beef + chicken pho and both meats were perfect. Probably the best quality I've tasted in a bowl of pho. I think the lack of MSG and questionable meats is the best part about eating pho in Melbourne but the Pho Nom version has definitely topped it for me. You get to DIY condiments and seasonings when you collect your meal, which includes the bamboo shoots. One thing I always despise about ordering pho is places that dumb what feels like a kilo of shoots to wade through before you get to your meal. I like having the option to be a little more sparing! If like me you have a tendency to overdo it on chilli (I never, ever learn), a Vietnamese iced coffee is the perfect mouth saviour. They have a good selection of rice paper rolls and banh mi that I would also be keen to try, but with Melbourne getting more wintery by the minute - I think I will be back for a soul warming bowl of Pho again soon. read more

Many years ago I made banh mi sandwiches my plane food of choice. In the beginning I stopped in San Francisco's Little Saigon in the Tenderloin to get them before departing from SFO. Now, whenever we fly home from Maui's OGG we make a detour on Dairy Road to get these savory sandwiches. Recently as we prepared to fly home from Melbourne, Australia, banh mi was on my mind. I know for sure I'll keep coming back here whenever I'm at emporium most likely because of their rice paper rolls. Im impressed at the packaging used for takeaways, can carry a pho back to my desk or home without burning my hands or losing half. Rice noodles are fresh and cooked perfectly. Not a big ball of mushy noodles. Beanshoots, mint and chili are so fresh and thoughtfully prepared. Broth is full of flavor. Chicken and rare beef are premium meat not dodgy cheap bits. A windowed cabinet will show you all of the tasty morsels on offer, or just choose your favourite from the menu. You know how you can go to some places and they'll charge up to $3 for a roll that isn't much bigger than your thumb? That is definitely not the case here! Whilst they are all over the $3 mark ($3.20 for the vege option and up to $3.80 for the fancier salmon, crispy pork, etc type) they are huge - double the size of other similar offerings around town. You get your option of sauces to accompany each roll and should you choose to dine in, there are other condiments on offer on all the tables including the all important Sriracha! I should mention the other menu offerings as well such as banh mi and pho - which going from the empty bowls being left by diners, must be similarly delicious. This Place is pretty Good Pho Nominal in fact. One of the first places to open at the new emporium centre, you can be safe that you'll get your fix here. There's a slew of alcoholic choices on offer, and if you want to have a bit more gourmet experience, Wagyu beef is available as a pho option. There's the regular chicken, beef, and mixed as well as a many varieties of bahn mi. You can also have the coconut milk if that makes things easier. The major downside here is that it can get a little crowded and hectic; the queue to pick up the food is often full of people going every which way, and of course, assembling their soups. Choose your seating wisely as it's quite busy and you're sure to get knocked and bumped about by foot traffic if sitting too close to the service counter. read more

Attempting to navigate around Emporium I happened across Pho Nom. I have tried most of the Pho places in and around this mall and I must say Pho Nom serves the best. They also do a pretty mean rice paper roll too. In the few visits I have made here, I have tried Pho Bo Hanoi with rare beef and Ga + Bo, with sliced rare beef and shredded chicken. Both were really good. The broth of the Pho is always full of flavour and I love the way they have a plethora of condiments (inc fresh chili and bean shoots) so you can influence the flavour yourself. Also worth a try are the beer Hanoi and beer Saigon. Both tasty beverages and a great accompaniment to the meal. Definitely sniff this place out if you are in the area. Oh and FYI, Pho Nom is not in the main food court it is located on the lower ground floor. Happy hunting. read more

I do love a good rice paper roll. And Pho Nom do them well. My favourites here are the chicken lemongrass and crispy pork. Two rolls for $6.00 is a-okay by me for a quick lunch or dinner on the go. So we went to Phò Nom today and had very high expectations after reading all this positive statements on Yelp. However, despite the hype I found the food mediocre at best. But to be fair: We only had phò and rice paper rolls (phò with not so rare beef, bits of brisket and a quarter of a beef ball, and phò with some shredded boiler; rice paper rolls with prawns and pork skewer) and didn't try the other things on the menu, that looked delicious. Back to my review, I don't know where previous reviewers had there last phò-fix, but those must have been horrible places, if they dub this the best vietnamese food/phò/etc. in the CBD. I know for sure that there are at least 4 different places within 5 minute walking distance that serve a phò more savory and hearty and rolls less dry than those at Phò Nom. Also, the bowl you get here for $12 something is usually the small $9 bowl at other places (and don't even get me started on the lack of complementary tea that I grew so accustomed to). To sum this up: decent place for a quick bite, a little bit above average price for a bowl of phò, solid for a food court, but very low key in flavors. Go there if you are in the LG of the Emporium and don't find the way out, while craving vietnamese food. Avoid, if you are a phò afficionado and opt for something more flavory. read more

Ordered the pho bo Saigon with ox tail which tasted average, the soup was warm but not hot enough. The egg rolls were great, and the lemon iced tea was absolutely refreshing.
