I've had Van Leeuwen several times now and I honestly feel like all their flavors kind of taste the same lol. Like their ice cream isn't bad, I just feel like it's not the best ice cream place in the world. I still go back to them though since I sometimes am in the Grand Central area and this location is so convenient. December 2024 visit: earl grey, strawberry matcha, vegan peanut butter brownie honeycomb February 2025 visit: I don't remember everything I got but I know I got their peanut butter brownie honeycomb as one of the flavors because I love peanut butter and I think dulce de leche was the other flavor September 2025 visit: vegan strawberry matcha, vegan strawberry shortcake, vegan banana bread pudding with fudge swirls My favorite flavors out of all of these would be their vegan peanut butter brownie honeycomb and vegan banana bread pudding with fudge swirls. What do I like about their ice cream though is that it's not too sweet. I'm lactose intolerant and back when I had their dairy flavors, I didn't have a bad reaction to their ice cream either which is nice considering many ice cream places have made run to the bathroom one hour later. read more

I looove Van Leeuwen ice cream, but had only had it from the grocery store which, while delicious, I'm sure does not compare to the real deal from the scoop shop and I was right! The grocery store pints are great, but getting to try the ice cream from this place at Grand Central, was even better. I got two flavors and surprisingly the dairy free banana bread flavor was SO good and my favorite! I would never have known it was dairy free - it was still super rich, creamy, and flavorful. Van Leeuwen always slaps, it's some of my favorite ice cream both for the variety of unique flavors and the overall creaminess (it's the fat!). I try not to keep ice cream in the house but whenever I want some, I usually take to the grocery store for some VL pints. The only brick and mortar location of theirs I've been to is the one in Greenwich, CT - and now this one (if it count's, as this is a to-go stand in Grand Central). Anyway, I was heading home and thought a little treat would be fun (what's life without little treats), so I decided to grab myself some ice cream from here. The VL in GCT is located on the lower level where (most) of the other quick service spots are located. They offer a lot of flavors, available in cups, cones, pints, and ice cream sandwiches. I was feeling a cone, and decided on two flavors because why not - the coffee affogato and marionberry cheesecake. The waffle cone was big, so it was a decent amount of ice cream that could easily be shared - but I'm no quitter. Ice cream was good as expected, and it was served super fast. I give the team credit for being super efficient as this is a popular spot that almost always has a line. Overall, a solid experience at the GCT Van Leeuwen - I'm glad it's here for those times I need a treat before heading home. read more

I came on a Tuesday afternoon. Not very busy around, but bustling area of course being in grand central. None of the staff were that friendly, but it's NYC. I was warm so I wanted something cold to drink. I ordered a milkshake with 2 different flavors. They accommodated that. The milkshake was very good. I didn't love the price of $11. But again NYC. Van Leeuwen is excellent ice cream! That's all you really need to take away from this review, but read on if you want details. I have walked by other locations and intended to return and check out their ice cream, but this occasion I was with a friend in the Lower Level of Grand Central Terminal and decided to see if the hype is real. It is. You walk up and the servers will happily oblige if you request a sample. No plastic spoons here, stainless steel with a canister atop the counter in which to place them when finished an individual sampling. For me, it all starts out with vanilla. So I ordered a scoop of vanilla and their peanut butter brownie honeycomb. The vanilla was excellent, rich and creamy, with great consistency and mouthfeel. This is among the best vanilla ice cream I have had and it competes with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla, which I, as a Southerner, consider the gold standard. The Van Leeuwen vanilla does not have the inimitable homemade churned taste, but it has a very rich and ultra creamy vanilla taste and consistency that you could possibly forget about that difference. Outstanding effort Van Leeuwen. The peanut butter brownie honeycomb was also very good. If you are a fan of peanut butter and chocolate, this is for you. It is also very rich, but neither of these two scoops were too sweet or cloying as some might say. The scoops were generous, but two scoops will cost around eight or nine bucks and change. This pleasure does not come cheap, but I imagine it is worth it on a hot summer day to retreat to the basement of Grand Central, have a bite to eat and finish at the Van Leeuwen counter, or go directly to this counter for one of life's simple pleasures. Visiting from Bay Area & being loyal to my Salt n Straw and thinking there's no better ice-cream, I was blown away by this spot. Fantastic variety of flavours, rich, creamy and absolutely delicious treats. We sampled the Sicilian pistachio, passion fruit and affogato. They were all great, however passion fruit was a bit too sweet for me. We finally got a double scoop of the affogato and dark chocolate fudge brownie on a waffle cone and were off on our way to catch the train back home! Welcome Van Leeuwen to Grand Central Terminal Lower Level Dining Concourse! Today is their grand opening day! Surprisingly the line wasn't long. $1 single scoop ice cream in a cup or cone until 1PM. I tried 3 flavors that I never had before on real taster steel spoons. There is a bucket to put in the used spoons. The employee was really patient with me and tasted 3 different flavors [marionberry cheesecake (very sweet), earl grey tea (this tastes like the tea), and PB brownie honeycomb (a bit on the sweet side)]. Loved it here!! There was a line out the door at 10pm and it was so worth it. Friendly staff, lots of options, and it was delicious. The store is cool with cute decorations of hanging gelato and cases of chocolate on display and to buy. There's a little seating area with tiny tables. I've heard about this place from my friends for a long time and have been wanting to try it. It did not disappoint when I walked in. It already smelled so amazing. They had plenty of flavors and many of them were vegan, which was good for me since I am lactose intolerant. So I knew the vegan options would be safe for me. I went with the vegan cookie dough chocolate chip which was made with oat milk in a cone. The storefront was smaller with no seating.
