Oh my God,,, you are not going to believe this group. From the moment that you walk in the door, you are treated like a friend, not a customer. The staff is beyond nice and so professional that you immediately feel that you have nothing to worry about.... and then, you get to meet the nicest doctor on the Planet... Dr. James Van Horn. A warm smile and a hug. Your worries melt away. My right hip was replaced by Dr. Van Horn at the Grants Pass Surgery center. They too require a huge shout out for courtesy and professionalism. I walked in the door at 5:45 AM and by 7:30 I was in surgery. By 9:30 AM, I was awake and eating a sandwich... I took a pain pill, got up and walked through the center, went to the restroom and back to recovery. I had a little more to eat and was then released by 11:30 AM. The pain was all but Non-Existent. I made it home and was walking in my Neighborhood by 1:00 PM! My neighbors asked me when I had surgery. When I said 5 hours ago... they were amazed. I had to use a walker for 3 days and a cane for a couple of weeks, not so much for pain but for safety. By the Sunday following the surgery (just 3 days later), I stopped taking the pain medication and had no real pain at all. I do recommend that you do follow the Pre-Op and the Post-Op Physical Therapy very carefully!!! Keep your leg elevated and iced for two weeks when you are not walking. Also, on your own, exercise a heavily several weeks in advance... it is well worth your time and you can make it fun... remember that, you are getting a "New lease on life",,, Don't waste it! I'm not sure I should even give a 1 star rating. I always had a good relationship with Dr. Van Horne, I just never liked what he did to me. I'll add pictures here that tells about my experience, the last 3 I took this morning showing all the dry skin on both legs. For the past 13 years I have never been without pain and problems. 'HERE IS MY WRITTEN RECORD" After receiving new hip 9 Apr. 2007 I started having problems with my legs (swelling and sudden sharp leg pains). From my knees down my legs turned red. 11\fs26 Sep. Got letter from Dr Van Horne office about bad DePuy ASR hip replacement implant from 9 Apr. 2007. 23 Sep. Called Dr Van Horne and was told to call Johnson & Johnson for Claim #. Called Johnson & Johnson and was given Claim # 186102756. Called Dr Va Horne's office and left Claim # on voice mail. 28 Sep. Appointment with Dr Countiss, was told I should contact Dr Van Horne about making an appointment. 29 Sep. Called Dr Vanhorne about appointment and got voice mail. 30 Sep. Dr Vanhorne's office called and gave appointment dates 4 Nov. for Imaging and 18 Nov. to see Dr Vanhorne. 5 Oct. Johnson & Johnson called to give me some information and ask me if Dr Vanhorne had recommended the DePuy hip. ( The answer to that was yes) Received letter from Broadspire informing me that DePuy would pay all of my out of pocket expenses including the deductibles and co-pays. 8 Oct. Called Black Chapman & Webber. 4 Nov. Went to Imaging, 18 Nov. Went to Paragon (Dr Vanhorne) and was told that I should have hip replaced as soon as possible due to problems shown on Imaging. (Note: I was first scheduled for Surgery the last of Jan. but did not go to surgery till the 24th of Feb.. Dr Vanhorne felt I needed to go to Radiation for treatment just before surgery. Treatment was $2413.00) 29 Nov. Started Physical Therapy. (approx. $169.00 a session for a total of over $4000.00.) December: 1, 6, 8,13,15, 20, 22 Physical Therapy. 24 Feb. Day of surgery. Reported early so I could go to Radiation just before surgery. Radiation was needed to stop unwanted bone growth caused from the first hip replacement 9 Apr. 2007. Dr Countiss ask to assist in this surgery and Dr Vanhorne allowed him to do so. I was later told by Dr Countis that Dr Vanhorne got a little rough and had to apply a lot of pressure trying to grind out my new hip joint, He told me that it took most all his strength to hold me onto the operation table. 27 Feb. Discharged from 3 Rivers Hospital after surgery to go home. March - Physical Therapy 10, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, and 30 March. 28 Mar. Appointment at Paragon (Dr Vanhorne). April - Physical Therapy 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22,27, and 29 (last day) April. My symptoms since Hip Surgery 9 Apr. 2007. (1) I have experienced fatigue ever since first surgery. (2) Had sensations down my leg off and on day and night of like a hot electrical shock, with tingling. (3) Up on standing I was unable to start walking for a few moments. I would try to, but my leg wouldn't work. (4) I had as much pain in my hip as I had before my first surgery and I still limped as bad on it as I did before, in spite of how hard I tried not to. (5) I have been unable to do a lot of the things I normally did all the time, before my first surgery, like mowing the lawns, doing a little work on my pickup, and things with my horses, which was my hobby. Also I couldn't do home improvement projects like I had in the past. (6) Problems standing up and setting down. (Always) (7) Hard getting in and out of car. (Always) (8) Right leg was asleep and numb almost constantly after surgery. Even woke me up at night. Right leg gets numb setting in car. Sometimes there is a pain similar to frost bite or lack of circulation and the numbness can causes problems when driving . (Always when over half an hour) (9) Sore muscles all the time in lower back, hips, and legs. (10) Can't take a step for a couple moments after standing up. Muscles are stiff and must loosen up before stepping away. (Always) (11) Hurts to walk. (12) Can't bend over to pick something up off from floor. Back, legs and hips hurt when trying to do so. (13) Back is always sore. (14) Can't put sock on right foot or tie shoe without help. (15) Legs swell, gets burning sensation and sometimes itch real bad. Sometimes I draw blood from scratching. (16) Bursitis in left hip. (17) I've noticed that my right foot sometimes turns in when I'm walking. Maybe due to tightening of leg muscles. (18) Lots of headaches. (19) Laying on my left side will cause my hip to ache. (20) One of the most challenging aspects of of the entire experience has been trying to stay in a good frame of mind. I have never liked to see people set around and feel sorry for themselves, so I have dealt with it on a day to day basis. It is now 2/4/2026 "Note, after all these years I still suffer leg pains and skin problems" In total I have had 3 hip replacements, 2 on my right side and 1 on my left. read more

Dr. Van Horne did my mother's hip replacement. It was such an easy process. The doctor lays out all the things you need to do, step-by-step. Just follow his directions and the days before surgery will be more painful than any day after. Mom had little to no pain after surgery, even the next day with a 2-hour drive home. I am so pleased with the care Mom received that I've asked Dr. Van Horne to do my hip replacement when the time comes. I wouldn't see anyone else. read more

Dr. Van Horne performed my first hip replacement about 3 1/3 months ago. He is an amazing surgeon; and all I can say is do exactly what he tells you that needs to be done. I am now preparing for my second hip replacement in about 6 weeks. The biggest thing I can tell anyone looking at this type of surgery with Dr. Van Horne, is if you do exactly what you are supposed to it will be a "piece of cake". read more

I had my hip replaced four months ago by Dr. Van Horne, and I am truly back to normal. His level of care and skill is unsurpassed, and his staff and surgical center are top-notch. He assigns a tough pre-and-post surgical exercise program, which, if you follow closely, will ensure that you will heal well, and quickly. I was walking within hours of surgery, home that afternoon, off narcotics by day three, off walker/cane also by day four. Went up and down stairs by day five, walked in the woods with hiking poles at day nine, driving on day 12. Dr. Van Horne is a warm, kind and funny man. My first experience with major surgery was a hip replacement with Dr. Van Horne. I would definitely go back if I ever need orthopedic surgery again. I followed his very detailed instructions for about two months of walking and stretching pre-surgery, and they helped immensely. I was on my feet and home the day of surgery, off hard pain meds by the fourth day and driving by the second week. Some of the prep didn't make sense at first and was time consuming (putting my couch and bed up on blocks), but I'm so glad I did. It made my recuperation much more comfortable and really helped the healing process. It's been 10 weeks since my surgery, and I have no pain in my hip, just some minor muscle discomfort that I'm taking care of with physical therapy and walking. I'm about 85%-90% back to my old self. DR. Van Horne is the doctor to see for hip or knee replacement...my husband had his hip replaced 8 weeks ago and is doing great! You need to follow exactly Dr. Van Horne's pre-op and post-op instructions, as far as doing strengthening exercises, etc. My husband came home the same day as the surgery, was off pain meds after day 3, was driving on day 10, went to the prescribed PT sessions post-op, and has no discomfort. Suffered way to long with hip pain before going to see Dr. Van Horn. A friend of mine referred me to him after her having a knee then hip replacement surgery. The staff are nice and professional, Dr. Van Horn is strict with his guide lines and Im glad he is. Went home same day of surgery , three days later off the pain meds and have one PT session done. Followed his instructions to the letter wanting a great result and two months after surgery Im at 90% and can tie my shoe again. Take it from someone that really tried not to have surgery it made my life normal again. Dr. Van Horn has put a lot of work in his pre-op and post op instructions so that you will have the best out come possible . Dr. Van Horn did a fantastic job for me, doing a total knee replacement on both knees three months apart. I could not ask for better. He is a great guy and an awesome surgeon, he knows his stuff! Prior to doing my knee surgery I did go to therapy and did exercises at home along with my walking each day. After the surgery I came home and started my walking the very next day. I was the first patient of the day and it took one hour to do the surgery and then I was able to return home. I was totally amazed and how little the pain was along with what I was able to do as far as walking. When I went in for my one month checkup I had him checked my other knee because it started bothering me because I had been doing so much walking. After x-raying it he said it was bone on bone and had arthritis. I am 62 years old and have been hard on my body my whole life. And now for the review of the work that was done, it was fantastic. It was 80% healed after one month. But I did my exercises faithfully just like a pro football player would do. Three months after the first operation he did my other knee and it has turned out fantastic also. As a matter fact the next day after surgery I walked over to my neighbor's house which is down the road and through a field, about a quarter of a mile and back with no problem and no cane. He will tell you that 10% of having a good outcome has to do with his surgery 90% has to do with your exercising and therapy, I have found out that that is 100% true. Two thumbs up for you Dr Van Horn, thank you very much for a great job and getting me back on my feet. I can do more now than I have done in years. If you have any knee or hip problems Dr Van Horn is the man to see, I cannot say enough about him. read more

Dr. Van Horne, my knee replacement surgeon was insistent on pre surgery physical preparation. I followed his recommendation and walked one hour a day, six days a week for several months prior to surgery and also did therapy strengthening. The results have been incredible for me. My surgery was outpatient, I was off hard drugs the third day, off walking AIDS in four days and working out in therapy the first week. I have never felt pain just minor discomfort while in therapy. This is my ninth week after surgery and l feel 90% back to normal. Moral of the story listen to and do as Dr. Van Horne suggest for your best surgery experience. Dr. Van Horne is awesome. read more
