As we wondered around British Columbia, we came across Value Village and decided to take a look. What I did like was that they had restrooms and it was clean and didn't smell bad. There's a security guard at the entrance. The place was huge and seemed to be well stocked. There's many selections, but some of the quality seemed lacking. The prices seemed high. We left without buying anything. I looked at suitcases because my mother-in-law's suitcase handle was messing up, but the suitcases were severely damaged and not worth the prices tagged. read more

Found this place after strolling around Victoria. This wasn't the typical Value Village I've been to. Surprisingly everything was nicely organized so items were easy to find. They also have a section to buy instruments right by the self-counter. They also had Wii game CDs around $6- $7 as well. I was so impressed to see one of the cleanest Value Village here. DO NOT SHOP AT THIS STORE I'm writing this review with considerable frustration and disappointment following an incident at this Value Village location that has completely altered my perception of this establishment. My mother and I visited this store hoping to find some budget-friendly items, as we've done many times before at various thrift locations. We found nine items that seemed appropriately priced for a donation-based retailer, though admittedly on the higher end of what I'd typically expect. What happened at the register, however, was nothing short of disgusting. The moment we approached checkout, staff immediately launched into accusations that we had deliberately switched the price tags on ALL of our items. Every. Single. One. I want to be clear. I recognize that tag switching unfortunately happens in retail, and stores must protect against it. But to automatically assume that nine separate items had all been tampered with felt like an extreme leap to the worst possible conclusion about our character before any investigation had even occurred. When a supervisor arrived, she announced that nearly all of our items were actually priced nearly four times higher than what the tags indicated. Yet from what we observed, she didn't conduct a thorough verification of each piece, which left us questioning whether this dramatic price difference was even accurate. If it was accurate, though, this raises an even more troubling question: how is a store built entirely on community donations justifying prices that compete with traditional retail? The entire premise seems contradictory. What truly made this experience unbearable wasn't just the pricing confusion. It was how we were treated as human beings. My elderly mother has been a dedicated Value Village shopper for years, and to watch her be treated as a suspected criminal was genuinely painful. We attempted to escalate the situation by requesting the manager, Jackie, only to be told she was occupied in a meeting but would see us momentarily. Twenty minutes passed. No manager. No update. We eventually left, but not before staff provided us with what they described as Jackie's direct contact number, promising she'd reach out to resolve the situation. That call never came. When we took the initiative to call ourselves, we learned that the "direct number" was actually just the regional office line. The person who answered identified themselves as the manager "Joel," who refused to provide his last name or employee number when asked. "Joel" then delivered the final blow: Jackie wasn't even scheduled to work that day at all. Not only had we been met with complete dishonesty and a lack of respect by store staff, but now by management as well. Joel's response to our concerns was particularly galling. He actually laughed at the suggestion that their store could have made an error and suggested the store do an investigation into us for tag changing. His dismissive attitude made it abundantly clear that customer concerns are not taken seriously at any level of this organization at all. The leadership demonstrates a troubling lack of professionalism by individuals who lack the empathy, patience or human decency for a customer service position. This entire ordeal has revealed significant operational and ethical problems at this location. from inventory control issues to staff conduct to fundamental dishonesty about management availability. After shopping at countless retailers over the years, I can honestly say I've never felt so disrespected and dismissed. I'm sharing this experience so others can make an informed decision about where to spend their time and money. This post is about the Victoria, BC store. I was there yesterday and was really surprised by the following: 1. Prices - seriously inflated, especially in housewares. Value Village is not the pre-Covid store I remember 2. Cleanliness: the dirtiest store I have ever seen, no exaggeration. The shopping baskets were filthy, as were the floors. I did not check out the change rooms. Obvious dirt everywhere. Made me wonder about any clothing or other items that happens to fall off onto the floor. 3. Staff: no complaints there. Very helpful. They deserve accolades for working in such a depressing and potentially health hazardous environment. And a wage increase! Conclusion: I did eventually find what I was looking for but only after sifting through shelves and racks of overpriced and suspect goods. I saw lots of broken, dirty and damaged items with ridiculous prices. Given the economic downturn we are experiencing, it was not surprising that the store was busy on a rainy Monday afternoon. Value Village is a for-profit US corporation offering a sub-standard shopping experience for customers. It is unclear how much they actually contribute to charity. Even if one does not care about that, there is more 'value' in shopping with and donating to other local thrift stores. Value Village - you can do (much) better! read more

I needed something to do while waiting on the ghost tour I was supposed to go on at night so I decided to walk around the streets of downtown Victoria until the meetup time. Since I usually love to see what shows up in thrift stores when I travel internationally, I decided to stop in Value Village. Yes, I know it's just Canada but it's still international since I'm from the states. Anyway, I was a bit hesitant right away as I entered for two reasons. The first is that there is a security guard right inside the doors. This usually is a sign that the store has problems with theft, people with backpacks, or the homeless. Sorry if that sounds terrible to say but it's the truth. The second reason is that the store was substantially packed full of people in every direction. Granted it was a few days before Halloween, but there literally was not enough room to even push a cart down the aisle. With lots of people comes a bit of a cleanliness issue. I'm not saying it's dirty but with more traffic, things just tend to be all over the floor in certain departments. So watch your step but also be patient and yield the right-of-way if the aisle is too narrow for two people to fit with ease. On the flip side, there was a lot, and I mean A LOT of items packed on the shelves. All the square footage was utilized to display items. I was really just looking for books and videos because I did not have the time nor the patience to look through the clothes or housewares. It was too much! I did find a movie and the price was just as it was in the states. So, I can't comment on the other prices around the store. The cash register lines were long but they moved pretty quick, or at least I thought so. I think someone commented on the staff being cranky. I don't think cranky is the word I'd use. Maybe more so tired since it's very busy and they're basically cleaning up after people who are not courteous enough to pick up after themselves all day. It's a job nonetheless. read more

A better bet is St. Vincent de Paul (cheaper) but they may not have what you're looking for. because their selection is far less than VV. Even the Thrift Shops out in Sooke surpass St. Vincent de Paul's for bargains if you're willing to travel that far. That said, Value Village is so large that you can get lost in there which is good if you want to chill (sooner or later though, you'll have to use the Value Village Washrooms which are nasty). read more

Good for some light shopping Immediately when you walk in you are greeted by two security guards making sure you don't steal, which I did not find comforting or inviting. Covid-19 protocols are very up to date! There is hand sanitizer at the door, floor stickers showing walking patterns and your not allowed entry without a mask. In terms of items that are sold there is a great selection of clothing but not as much household items. Prices are a little more on the high side but still affordable. I wouldn't go here if you are searching for the lowest possible price there is a salvation army down the street that is much better for that :) Every employee is a different experience but most people are kind and helpful over all. I ended up with two shirts and a pair of jeans for 35$ which is a good price to me, I would go back and recommend to a friend but nothing extraordinary, quite an average thrift chain. read more

There are deals.yes the workers looked unhappy as far as the customer's it's not far to say anything nasty about people who are less fortunate then others. This is my opinion...The smell. It smells of death and dirty laundry. It only takes a few cloths with the smell of death to smell up the whole place and dirty laundry. So I would think there is some bugs and germs all threw the place. No wonder the staff are unhappy. The single most unprofessional experience i have ever had in 45 years of living. I was in value village shopping today when a manager(i think) approached me and told me to get out of the store. I thought he was joking, but he was dead serious. I asked what for, I had just been looking at shoes and had just arrived. Nothing was amiss... or afoot! The man kept very abruptly and loudly telling me that i had to leave the store immediately or he was calling the police. I have absolutely no idea why he would say this to me! I was overwhelmed and confused, i have never ever been told to leave a store in my life, i dont steal and i wasn't causing any kind of commotion. I left, but after i did i realized that i had just been bullied, i had for the first time in my life experienced real injustice by a petty tyrant. It feels terrible. Overpriced items in bad condition usually priced to a point one could simply buy NEW from a store like Walmart. Management will not lower prices on electronics even when you show them the said item doesn't work. They will say when questioned the item is being sold for parts but don't actually label the item as probably not working or sold for parts. Overpriced pants in horrible condition almost paper thin being sold for 14.99 but only worth maybe 1.99$ Just go to Walmart and buy brand new jeans for 14.99. The 1819 Store St in Victoria has a Manager of East Indian Decent (not sure) he Harasses customers Profiles them than brings over his security staff to back him up. He should be fired. Tsk Tsk, Value Village. I used to love visiting you at least once a week. Aisle upon aisle of great bargains, a fantastic selection of casual and work clothes, as well as quirky furniture. There was nary a visit when I would leave empty handed. Alas, this is no longer the case. I don`t know who they`ve got in the back pricing everything these days, but it`s getting ridiculous. I was skimming through, looking for a new pair of work pants, and to my HORROR, nearly everything in the section was priced between $15 and $45. $45?! They do realize that these clothes are second hand, right? I shook my head and walked over to the jackets, hoping to find something suitable to replace my winter coat. $120 for an old wool jacket? Seriously? Unfortunately, this was not the first time that I've noticed an influx of overpriced items, and I don't think it'll be the last. I used to always say, "Why would I shop in the mall when I can get the same items at Value Village for half the price?" Now the reverse is true and it makes me sad! I feel like such an old lady saying this, but I remember a time when you could walk in to the VV and leave with an entire outfit, shoes and all, for less than $30. V V used to be a great store. I loved being able to load up with a six month supply of work clothes for $50. And I guess you still can if you are very selective and really dig deep. Some of the kitchen stuff and small appliances (and all the trinkets on top of the shelves) however have become ridiculously priced. Seriously, to the point where I could buy NEW for almost the price they have listed things at. I have seen identical items marked sompletely different prices and when I question it am told "thats last weeks price". LOL. not even sure what that means. Staff are all an interesting lot. I used to love this location of Value Village. However my last visit was rather disappointing. Items are priced as if they are new or cost even more than a new item. I was at winners later in the same day and found an identical item for 50% cheaper! It is also a very dirty store. Items such as cups, pots and pans still had food on them! I have been to every single Value Village on the Lower Mainland and this is by far the most EXPENSIVE. Even damaged clothes are pricey and no-named brands were $14.99. They have a wide selection of kitchen goods but you can get cheaper at winners and its new! Coats and jackets started at $14 and up Blouses roughly $8.99 A plain silver chain was $14.99 Pans $34.99 Silver bowls $6.99 These are all items in a Vancouver Value Village you can get for a reasonable price. I found nothing reasonable here except for a levi's jacket for 12.99. Only deal. Limited street parking, 1 hour limit. I get it the island but still. read more

Yes, the prices at VV's have increased considerably over the last few years. For the working poor, it's no longer a viable retail option for purchasing mid range brand name clothing. For those with a more expendable cash flow, higher end brand names are an elusive discovery. The thrill of the find is now experienced by the usual gaggle of "pickers" that frequent your local store; chasing after rollig racks fresh out of the gate. These resellers are a contributing factor to the steady increase in prices over the years. Especially in the vintage and higher end sector. Staff at my local store will save designer items specifically for these merchants, knowing that they will pay higher prices and still be able to triple their profit online. They might as well let the "pickers" shop from the sorting room so that customers don't have to dodge shopping carts being used as battering rams every time a new rack rolls out. On rare occassions, when Mercury aligns with Mars, you may be able to beat them at their own game. I arrived one morning and literally ran into a fresh rack with three new, same style, different colour,designer coats prime for the picking. As I stood at the mirror adoring my treasures, two resellers asked me to pass on the coats that I didn't want. I responded with a rosounding declaration that I was purchasing them all. Apparently....I'm a greedy bitch. So, for those of us who have shopped at VV's for decades, cherish the days of dimes for poses. read more

I was surprised to see only two stars on this thrift shop! I didn't have long to browse but walked away with a couple of things that I was really happy with. I know everyone looks for different things, but here is what I found. 4 Enid Blyton books (English children's author), a simple baby sling in a nice black and white pattern, an ill fitting 80s dress with an adorable collar which I plan to alter, and some sewing odds and ends. The prices arn't the cheapest that I have seen, but in general they were reasonable. The place was packed with Halloween shoppers, so I may have lucked out with my finds on account of everyone else hunting down costumes. I'm sooooo disappointed by this store now. I used to love going there and now it's expensive. All the kitchen appliances are way overpriced for starters. The shoes are in bad shape mostly and still they want somewhere around $20 for most pairs it seems. I found a cute pair of PJ shorts. Price $15.95. What?? Like I'm talking about PJ material. Sure it has a Tommy Hilfiger label on it but it's second hand and shorts. It probably cost about $30 new and probably $15-20 on sale. Should be like $4.99 maximum. I found a small table-top mirror there today and they wanted $40 for it. I went to the back and asked them to reconsider the price. Nice mirror but not $40 nice. She said it was $80 new and so it was priced 1/2. Someone gave it to them for FREE. Why does everything have to go to Sh**t at some point?! Not fun anymore. Shopped here for Halloween duds with the family over the past weekend while visiting from the U.S. My daughter left her purse and wallet (with Nexus card, driver's license, etc.) in a dressing room on Friday night, and didn't realize it until late Saturday night. We all panicked, ransacked our car and hotel room looking for the purse - no luck. But when we stopped by at 10 am Sunday morning and checked with the manager, her purse was there, safe and secure!! There's the good, bad, and the ugly about this place. Let's start with the good: Huge selection. Really great deals if you are a member shopping on one of their 50% off days. Usually I can always find something amazing here but it takes time, patience, and the artful skill of knowing how to root around the piles of mess and clutter of shopping carts. Really would be a tough day if I walked away from this place empty handed! The bad: there are some things they sell here that make you think "WTF?!" such as a broken tea cup with some kind of oily goo for $10, then you find its non broken and clean twin for $1. You can tell not all of their pricers agree with each other, or which one was getting contact high in the loading dock. The ugly: the staff is pretty apathetic. Try not to ask or expect too much from them. I bought a piece of furniture here which was put in the loading dock for pick up and one guy drove the fork lift into it so hard it shattered to pieces- this was a solid wood vintage shelf. At least they gave me a full refund though. read more

I am the queen of buying second hand goods, and this place is simply a godsend. It's like a GOODWILL or SALVATION ARMY times 10. It's so big, I don't even think they keep inventory. Definitely not a place for the lazy shopper. You have to come here with no expectations, and a strong work ethic. You won't find what you're looking for if your request is too specific, but you will find quirky, unexpected separates...a sequined top here, a gold lame vest there. As long as you keep an open mind, and try things on in the aisles ( I can't emphasize that enough), you'll leave with a few special items. Whether it's a denim jumpsuit, or a over sized boyfriend trouser /blazer-with-massive-shoulder pads, I would suggest this cubic zirconium in the rough. Great for costumes or vintage gear, and there aren't any pretentious sales people trying to sell you overpriced hermes scarves. read more
