Excellent selection and nicest guys run this place! I wasn't sure what I'd find here being that it is in a tiny little alleyway in the middle of a tiny little Chinatown in Victoria, however I was pleasantly surprised. They manage to pack a ton of records in this little sliver of space! The different sections are alphabetized and are separated by genre. I was in here looking for a Cole Porter album and got a new condition 3 disc set for $40 CAD. I've had a hard time finding Cole Porter in record shops in the big cities I've gone to so I didn't expect I'd find one here - lucky me! I'm very happy with my find and the guys at the checkout were so sweet to boot. I will definitely come back here the next time I'm in town. They had some neat cd albums in the front case as well. This spot is a gem if you're ever in Victoria, BC. It has the vinyl you never expected to find in these parts but expect to pay a pretty penny for them. I came looking for 70's American RnB Soul and found some records here that I've never seen in the states, except on eBay. I'll definitely return if I ever find myself on this island again. read more

Very very overpriced unless you want to buy a used panorama by the cars for 30 bucks. When I asked why the prices were high the owner got very defensive and said he has employees to pay and I pay prices like the 1970's back on the east coast but I referenced some prices with Discogs and there were records 5 or 6x what other record stores sell for. read more

So this review is from visiting the store in 1992. But I hear it's the same place and guys running it so the review should still stand. This is a sweet shop to get new cds and cassettes for your car tapedeck. They have good hard rock and metal albums, but it's hard to find the latest Seattle grunge scene stuff reliably. They also have records. And a lot of them for some weird reason. I mean who buys records anymore? The owners are a couple old school rockers dudes. They will talk to you about anything. One time I was in there with a bud--and we had just smoked a bud--before deciding to check out the store. I'm pretty sure the owner knew we were baked as he took one look at us and put on some Black Sabbath Volume 4 and started playing air guitar. We were like "yeah". Another time I'm pretty sure he was the one who had the bud, as he came out of this little room and smelled the part. More old metal and air guitar. Anyway, this is a cool little shop to visit and buy your Led Zeppelin and new stuff like Alice in Chains. They also have awesome original concert posters for 60s shows. Some are apparently repros. Might be best to buy those when not high as you might end up paying a lot for a poster that you end up taping to your bedroom wall, causing much depreciation. read more

I started going to the Turntable a few years back. They have an amazing supply of 60s and 70s mint records, there are many other categories but my personal interests are quite narrow. Ernie who works there has encyclopedic knowledge of out of print, classic rock or early kraut rock, (my new favourite). You name it and he knows it and probably has a copy in the store. The store is in the middle of Fan Tan Alley and is small you almost have to leave the store to turn the record over - just kidding but after 4 people in the store and it feels very crowded. There is always something interesting playing on the store's turntable or CD player and the staff will play anything you find and want to preview. For anyone with an interest in older vinyl or newer used CDs the Turntable is a must. I will probably see you there Sunday afternoon, looking for that elusive first printing of an obscure musical treasure & I won't tell you which one I want. read more

My husband drags me to used CD stores all the time. Most of the time I am waiting for him to finish looking for rock CDs because my tastes are narrower than his. I prefer jazz, R&B, and world music. I was surprised to see some great finds in this store. The used CDs tend to run about $8. I found quite a few CDs in here, and I was looking around as long as my husband, which tells you that the selection here is pretty diverse for CDs. As others have said, the place is pretty small, so when people come in, you have to squeeze by in order to pass. There is another store that has just as good a selection of jazz and world music, but the prices are much more, so this place has an advantage over them. I rate it 5 stars. read more

I was recently a tourist in Victoria and stumbled across this shop while visiting Fan Tan alley. What a pleasant surprise! At first glance I noticed the funky cool vibe of the shop. Although I only got to visit for a short time, I really enjoyed the collection of old vinyl for sale. The selection of used cassette tapes was charming. And the posters for sale were the best part. I left with a great poster that I had not seen for sale elsewhere. If you're a fan of recorded music and retro pop culture, this is a must see shop. read more

In many shops the staff just sit behind the counter ignoring you ( in some cases even giving off smug cooler-than-thou attitude), but Ernie walks around talking to every customer in a way so friendly it's like you're a welcome guest in his home. Whatever album you're looking at, Ernie can tell you something about it, his enthusiasm utterly contagious. He's got unlimited useful suggestions for you too. You simply can't resist leaving the store with something in hand, even if you'd planned to. BTW the other Turntable guys are great too. May this shop live forever! read more

Great selection of original issue LPs. Unbelievable actually. Lots and lots to look through here. A haven for real vinyl hunters. Gotta take a star off for price though. Seems very very high. As one example, I saw REM Green (original press) for 50$!!! By comparison I bought the exact same record (original press) in one of the "expensive" Vancouver stores for 7$. Maybe something special about that copy I did not notice but it seemed in line with some of the high prices of some other things. Overall, it's THE place to go for original pressings and you will find it if you want it here. Just have to pay for it. read more

I will start by saying that, in my humble opinion, a truly *great* record store does not exist in Victoria. If this shop were in a bigger city, I'd probably only give it 3 stars. However, out of what is available, the Turntable is far and away the best for finding old used records at fair prices. I don't buy into the whole hype about vinyl having better sound quality than CD, (it's worse, much much worse), so I don't have a lot of interest in the new $25-30 reissues. Luckily, the Turntable seems to focus more on the REAL reason records are great - the thrill of digging through old recordings and finding something that captures a piece of the era in which it was recorded. I'm mostly into jazz, and this shop is the only one in town that even comes close to having a decent amount of jazz vinyl in the $10-15 range. It doesn't come close to my old record shop back in Edmonton, but it's a fun place to spend an hour or two, and any experience I've had with the staff has been very enjoyable. One afternoon after a couple of hours of digging and picking out some stuff to buy, I went to pay and my card got declined. The guy was very understanding and was happy to set them aside for me for a few days until I got a paycheque. read more

Absolutely placed in the world's smallest alley right next to some vintage thrift shops, and other cool places in Victoria island. I came here on vacation and enjoyed the vibe from the place. Staff was very friendly that I was an outsider and took few cents off of what I bought. I was able to find records I couldn't back in LA, even some in their original packaging. I am a frequent visitor of The Turntable. I go there once a week to check out their constantly changing " new arrivals " section. I'm a huge collector of 60s and 70s vinyl, mainly Rock and Psyc. This is certainly the store to fulfill my needs. they always have the pressing I'm looking for, and its always in great shape. They also have a great selection of used CD's to meet all your musical needs. The guys who work there are extremely knowledgeable and very kind. The owner of the store, Gary, was in a rock band in the 70s. Fable was their name, and they are certainly worth looking up ( I suggest their song - Battle of the Kneon Knights ). Gary has a big handlebar mustache, you cant miss him. He's more then happy to share stories of his band and what its like to be a rocker during that era of music. Ernie is the guy in charge when it comes to musical knowledge. You tell him a band and album , and hes sure to know it. On the off chance that that particular album isn't in stock, he is more than happy to take your name and number, and call you when a copy comes in ( you wont be waiting long ) . Ernie is also almost impossible to miss, hes a big guy with a purple Goatee. My favorite person I see there is Dan. He doesn't technically work there, but he hangs out there enough, and helps the customers enough, to be considered an employee. He is super nice, very caring, and is someone I personally look up to. He's a wealth of knowledge when it comes to band names and stories behind those bands. Ask him or Ernie to put a record on for you, and Dan will be sure to tell you a story behind that album, and will keep you wanting more. Dan has a full head of very silver hair, another hard guy to miss. If you are looking for a great musical environment, with amazing employees , and a hankerin for some great tunes, head down to the Turntable during the weekend, you are sure to have a great time. read more

I just went to the Turntable this afternoon, looking for a few records that I had been searching for for a while. I don't live in Victoria, so this had been the first time I had gone to the Turntable. Out of all of the record stores I wanted to go to in my stay in Victoria, I was looking forward to going to this store specifically, because they have a huge selection of harder to find prog rock from the 70's. It was easily the best experience I had ever had buying records, they went above and beyond to help me find the records I was looking for, and I came out quite pleased with the quality of the records I had purchased. Although their stock may cost a bit more than other record stores, you are definitely getting what you pay for in rarity and actual vinyl quality (their records are basically scratch-free). I will definitely visit again anytime I'm in Victoria, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for older music, such as 70's prog, classic rock, singer songwriter, etc. read more

Don't even know where to start with this shop. Not only are the records RIDICULOUSLY over priced, but the price stickers are stuck right on the album art. I don't know about you, but if I'm going to spend 30$+ on a record worth maybe 10$ I would expect it to be in pristine condition. This is not the case at "the turntable". Most of the records are in very rough shape and not worth anywhere near their marked price. So if you're in Victoria BC, do yourself a favor and head over to Ditch records on Fort st. They have a great selection of new and old at very reasonable prices. read more
