It's the only mall in Bakersfield, and compared to other malls in different cities it's pretty bad but that's okay. Not much goes on here, just average clothing stores and lots of jewelry stores. It's nice to walk around and look through the different stores. I suggest going on a weekday, especially around 11am-1pm, I think it's the least pack. I also suggest not buying shoes there until you compare prices online, some stores do overcharge. I've never experienced problems with bad customer service in any store however. I'm neutral about the mall. I go to the mall about once a year, it's rare I go more than that. Not that the mall is horrible, it's not, it just gets so packed and I can't be around so many people, it's probably my anxiety. Plus the walking and being on my feet for so long. Also it's a bit discouraging shopping at alot of these stores when I'm not a small. It seems these shirts are all belly shirts! There are so many great stores in the mall! There are so many great places to eat as well. The mall seems to have something for everyone. I do love how im able to memorize where all the stores are at. My girls love game stop which is right at the front entrance by Starbucks. For backbone school shopping, there is no doubt about it, we head to the mall! read more

I've always appreciated being able to walk in the mall before stores open--it's something I've seen many others do as well. During a recent visit, I entered through an open door and began walking, assuming as usual that it was okay. Unfortunately, I was met with extremely rude behavior from one of the janitors. Rather than kindly explaining the rules or he yelled at us to leave. He spoke to us in a disrespectful and unprofessional tone. I understand if there are rules about walking before hours, but there's no excuse for treating people poorly. A little courtesy and communication would go a long way. Beware of lying marketing tactics from hair tool booths. I was pulled into one of the small booths that sell hair tools by a curly haired gay guy trying to sell me out. He lied to me in order to convince me for his own benefit of getting commission. Kept telling me that the straightener I have uses ceramic (I have the babyliss pro and it uses titanium just the same material he was trying to sell me) What I'm so bothered by is how he lied to convince me for his own benefit. read more

Bakersfield only has one mall, which is surprising given the size of the population. With over a million residents now, especially since the population surpassed 900,000 in 2020, it seems like we could really use a second mall to accommodate everyone. Pretty dangerous place to be at... shootings happen too often in this mall. The mall can also be very crowded on random days, so it feels like a blessing when the mall is empty. The food court is way too expensive! My wife and I bought a cup of dog bites and a cup of mozzarella sticks from Wetzel Pretzel and the total came out to $22! I also get annoyed with the shoe guys cleaning shoes. I sometimes feel like I can't visit other stores without them asking to clean my shoes lol. read more

Good stores, department stores and then some. Mostly shopped around Target, the new FYE, Bath & Bodyworks, Lush and a few miscellaneous staple mall stores... Pretty solid movie theater on the outside of the mall as well. Valley Plaza encompass a huge block and has several businesses on the outside including the new Dave & Busters. Seeing security mishandled a fight among a large group of teens was wild, but apparently this happens a lot as well as other outrageous acts. Seems like the mall security manages what they can but are often overwhelmed. Once 40 plus kids started running our way, including some on bikes... We pretty much left.... though we were in the processing of leaving just before a 14year old girl threating another was stopped by security and asked to leave or be pepper sprayed. If you've ever been in range of someone being pepper sprayed it's super intense and will cause some coughing and disorientation for sure. Other than that this is a smaller mall, however one that's easy to navigate and enjoy when random acts of definitely not kindness occur. read more

DO NOT I repeat DO NOT make reservations for pictures. out appointment was at 4:15pm. got here at 3:45pm and we are still waiting at almost 5pm. it took multiple people telling the people running the pictures that they should stop helping those who don't have reservations (which that line was going faster) in order to catch up with those who do have reservations. also there are individuals who leave line and come back hour to an hour and a half later only to get back in line with a prior reservation time. at 5 we were told we had to wait an additional 30 minutes to get pictures due to understaffing. do not come to this mall for pictures read more

Updating my review based on our Santa photo experience. Booking was a breeze online, and the pet photo sessions are on special days. We chose an early session before Thanksgiving, arriving about 10 minutes early. The Santa village is just outside JcPenney's in the mall; park on the Hughes side. The evening was quiet, allowing us time to change costumes and capture the perfect shot with June and Santa. For around $45, you get digital and printed photos--a worthwhile keepsake. Some touch-ups at home were needed, but overall, a good deal. Friendly staff, and June enjoyed it! read more

If I could rate this store -10 stars I would. I will never be going here again I felt very unwelcome I went in at an early reasonable time and no employees were greeting me in any of the stores I went into. The service was awful every employee was very rude telling me it was too late to be there and I was awful as a person to go into a store so late with the exception of the place called earth bound they were actually very nice I also want to mention that there was at least an hour if not more left before the mall close I will never be going here ever again I rather drive the 45 minutes to the tejon outlets to do my shopping. every store was also very dirty not kept up so I felt nasty I also felt very unsafe with all the theft the mall security would turn a blind eye to everyone stealing it was unbelievable and I'm not even going to get started on the fact there was an active shooter or shooter threat yesterday and they still allowed people to shop that is beyond me I just wanted to make it very known that I will never be shopping here again very disappointed in my experience read more

I haven't been to the food court at this mall in a while. There are no trays to carry your food anymore. I was surprised at how filthy the eating area is. The tables were dirty and there was no one cleaning. They had metal blue chairs that were covered in grime. The floors had dried up stains all over them. The trash cans are covered in food goop. It was just a very unpleasant experience. Who ever manages the mall needs to up their game. read more

While it's popular to be a digital media troll/gangster and leave Karen-esque reviews, I'm going to dare and give the JCPENNEY in Valley Plaza the respect it deserves. Valley Plaza and Central Bakersfield overall have become an apocalyptic wasteland straight out of a sci-fi movie, with elementary/middle/high school kids riding their bicycles INSIDE the mall , popping wheelies, not giving a ****. But there are 2 supervisors at the JCPENNEY that deserve all the credit in the world for their customer service. Young lady named Kayla and Mikhiel (variation of Michael, I presume). Both of these supervisors exhibit a Sunny disposition and genuine joy of their work. They are helpful, cheerful, knowledgeable, and have good old fashioned customer service that is a dying breed. They make eye contact, smile, and answer customers questions. It's sad that I'm giving a positive review for acts of costumer service that used to be standard issue, but Kayla and Mikhiel are the epitome of being valuable assets to a company. They actually demonstrate self pride in knowing they're giving their best, which I believe is incredibly difficult when inconsiderate/entitled/rude customers drop clothes on the floor, urinate in dressing rooms, don't place items back where they belong, etc. If both of these supervisors aspire to promote within the company, I hope JCPENNEY recognizes their value and pays them the salary they deserve. read more

The valley plaza has bad selection due to not having good stores. Bathrooms are smelly. To many closed stores that could be used. Parking lot is horrible and degrading and even with all the security peoples cars still get broken into! And the worst part is the valley plaza closes super early! I guess the valley plaza doesn't care to generate income. They close the mall really early every day. Like today it's Monday writing this article and they're closing at 8 PM! The only good thing about this review is that it's review #100 for Valley Plaza. Just kidding... Not really, though. The cons still outweigh the pros, nonetheless. Crowded almost always, security is lacking, parking lot is a nightmare, lines are long in a lot of stores, lots of commotion due to the crowds. The only real pro that I can think of is variety. Lots of different stores for different needs or interests and various food court options. I think it's time we bring another mall back to Bakersfield, just to break up some of the crowds and tone down the parking lot. We're only getting bigger as a city, so it would be in the best interest of everyone. read more

The parking lot needs LOTS of repairs. The door going in has large sign "No Firearms". I have never seen that before and wonder why they have it. Valley Plaza Mall is the only real indoor mall that we have available to us in Bakersfield. East Hills Mall is a bad joke, and this mall has a couple of department stores and a decent variety of popular large chain stores as tenants. So why can't I bring myself to give it more than two stars? Valley Plaza Mall feels more like a hangout for delinquent teens than a real shopping mall. I know the security officers do their best to try to keep everybody in line, but every time I go I see youngsters from 15-25 posturing and fronting; they're there to be seen, not to shop. Yes, there are actual customers there too, but what always stands out are the roving groups of teens play-punching at others in their own group and staring down those in other groups. I ONLY come here when I can't get what I want ANYWHERE ELSE in town. I park closest to the store I need and get in and out of there quickly. This place always looks like trouble is brewing and I don't want to be caught in the crossfire. If you've ever read my reviews, you'll know that I'm not a chicken when it comes to shopping and eating in dicey parts of town, but it seems like people come here specifically looking for trouble. I'm not a big fan of the mall and I only go to shop for my boys and to make a stop at Mrs. Fields to fulfill my sweet tooth cravings. It's always super crowded and there's always a bunch of unsupervised teenage kids stirring up drama. The restrooms in the Oasis are disgusting with toilet paper thrown everywhere, like someone had toilet paper confetti and just had a little toilet paper party. Today there were roaches in the stall I used and I had to put 4 toilet seat covers just to pee. I honestly don't think the restrooms get cleaned up, but I could be wrong as I do not visit the mall often. read more

I'm surprised at the not so good ratings this mall has gotten considering when I came here I had a great time shopping, even better than some malls in the Bay Area with more stores and more people around. I think the main theme I experienced at these stores were great organization and cleanliness. The only thing I have to complain about is that the bathrooms are halfway around the mall, if you need to go be prepared to search quite a bit before you're able to find one. The stores here are all very nicely kept and organized even when there are sales. You can always find your size and people here are so friendly. Yes they work at the mall but they actually care if you need a size or can't find something. They're helpful like retail employees should be unlike the ones in the bay area that just don't really care whether you're in, out, or need to try something on or buying something at all. Picked up my Christmas gift from the Apple store tonight. Only 1 person allowed inside. Kids and I waited outside. No biggie... until kash was approached by security asking if he had questions... he said no. I am not a fan of going to shopping malls, but Valley Plaza is okay. We only go about once a year cause my wife is not crazy about coming here either. When we do go, it is during the middle of the week cause of less crowds. I cannot say anything really negative about the mall, but there is nothing really good about it either. It's just ordinary. It is fun to people watch, though, while I wait for my wife to finish shopping. Just find a nice comfortable chair and relax. read more

So it's no shocker that Bakersfield has only one real indoor mall. Aside from a slew of burgeoning strip malls, not much else that we have to offer in terms of notable stores are located anywhere in town except for the Plaza. More recently, the Coach Store and the Guess Store came to town and graced the mall with higher end fashion alternatives. However, the Plaza is and always will be for me my favorite place to avoid if at all possible. A few decades ago, on my eighteenth birthday, a teenage wish came true when I landed a job at Macy's (then, Robinsons May) and continued to work there until I got too busy with wedding plans for a second job. While I enjoyed working in the office (never did have a floor job), my desire to be at the Plaza for anything that wasn't work related grew. And unfortunately many years later, I still look for a reason to quickly duck in and out of Macy's without traipsing through the mall corridors whenever possible. Can you blame me? As a shopping experience, it's fair to say that you never know what to expect on any given evening or weekend. The crowd is diverse and borders on creepy at times. However, I find that my most enjoyable visits have been weekdays, when it opens and during the school year Monday-Friday. read more

Not sure how to rate this joint... I say that because I have been going to thew Valley Plaza since I was just a wee little smart ass, back in the 70's... I can remember all of the things that aren't there any more, like the fountains that everyone used to toss coins into. Or the giant candy counter that was in Sears... Like a lot of malls today, this one seems to have an abundance of shoe, athletic, cell phone accessories, women's clothes and a handful of eateries. Some stores are better than others. Some not. I'd actually give this a 4.5, but that's ok. The mall isn't too bad as long as you don't go in the night time (unless you go before it closes). It's been quite sometime since I've been here and I can see that it's been updated with newer stores. For example, H&M, Raiders, and Miniso. Also we have a few new food stands. I hope this mall can keep going forward...but I'm hoping also that the new mall that will replace the East Hills mall will be up to date also! Can't wait! read more

This mall is huge! There's JC Penney, Macy's, Target, New York and Company, Sephora, and a bunch of other small retailers. The place reminded me a mix of between Carson Mall, West Covina and La Puente in SoCal. The place is clean, safe, and there's ample parking. This mall is a great place to take a stroll and to grab a bite to eat. I ended up at target and got a few items. The target itself is organized and clean. This is definitely a one stop shop for all your needs! read more
